If a homebrew tool may have affected your PlayStation, stop using it, secure your email and PlayStation accounts if you see suspicious activity, and troubleshoot the console through official PlayStation instructions. An unfamiliar sign-in, payment, or account change is an account-security incident; it does not by itself prove that the console has malware. Avoid a factory reset until you understand the data it will erase.
First, separate an account problem from a console problem
“Compromised” can mean different things. Someone may have gained access to your PlayStation account, a tool may have changed console settings or software, or the console may simply be malfunctioning. These situations call for different responses. PlayStation’s support guidance covers account recovery, Safe Mode and software reinstallation, but does not establish that a particular homebrew tool is malicious or provide a universal malware-removal process.

Start by noting what you actually observed: an unfamiliar sign-in or email, an account setting changed without your permission, an unknown purchase, a system error, or a console that no longer starts normally. Avoid treating suspicion alone as proof of infection. That distinction matters because account recovery can protect your sign-in and payment information, while a system-software reinstall is a destructive troubleshooting option—not a confirmed malware-cleaning procedure.
Make the response match the evidence. If the only sign is a console error, begin with the official console troubleshooting route. If you see an unfamiliar PlayStation account change or charge, treat that separately as a possible account incident even if the console still works. Write down the symptoms and any account activity you can verify; that can help you explain the issue if you need support. Do not keep running the tool to see whether the problem happens again.

Stop using the tool and avoid exposing credentials
Stop running the suspected tool and do not enter your PlayStation or email password into the tool, an unofficial page, or a link it supplied. This is a precaution, not a claim that every homebrew tool is harmful. If you already entered credentials, treat them as potentially exposed and secure the associated accounts.
Do not download a supposed console cleaner or unofficial firmware as a first response. PlayStation warns that unauthorized update files or methods can cause problems, and an altered console may not work properly or accept official update data. Use official PlayStation support instructions and files if software troubleshooting becomes necessary.
Secure your email and recover your PlayStation account
Secure the email account first
If you see changes to your PlayStation account that you did not make, change the password for the email account linked to it before starting account recovery. The email account can be used to receive recovery messages, so securing it first helps prevent someone else from intercepting them. If you cannot secure that email account, contact its provider. PlayStation’s guidance for compromised accounts and unauthorized charges sets out this response.
Use PlayStation’s recovery route
Follow PlayStation’s account recovery instructions if you can no longer sign in or suspect someone changed your sign-in information. Contact PlayStation Support or use its Online Assistant if your sign-in ID, online ID, or password was changed without permission, or if you cannot access the email address or verification method needed for recovery. Use the support route for your region; available recovery steps and labels can vary.
After regaining access, review your account’s security settings and sign-in method. Change the PlayStation password to a strong, unique one, and do not reuse the password from your email account or another service. PlayStation recommends using different passwords and keeping them in a password manager; its security best-practice guidance explains the broader recommendations. A password manager can help maintain unique passwords, but it cannot recover a locked account.

Add another sign-in safeguard
Enable 2-Step Verification or, where available, a passkey after you have restored access. PlayStation describes 2-Step Verification as an additional sign-in layer using a code sent by SMS or generated through an authenticator app. Review the current options for your account in PlayStation’s 2-step verification instructions and security settings guide. Keep your recovery details and verification method accessible so a lost phone or unavailable email does not lock you out.
These steps address different risks: a unique password reduces the harm from password reuse, while 2-Step Verification adds another check at sign-in. Neither replaces recovering the account if someone has already changed its details. If you cannot reach your email or verification method, use PlayStation’s support route instead of repeatedly guessing or trying unofficial recovery services.

Review purchases, subscriptions, and signed-in devices
If you see an unfamiliar charge, check your PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions before deciding what happened. If a charge remains unexplained, follow the official refund or support guidance linked from the unauthorized-payment and compromised-account page. If you cannot access the account, contact PlayStation Support rather than attempting changes through an account you do not control.
Removing payment methods is not a universal requirement for every suspected homebrew-tool incident. PlayStation mentions that action in the stolen-console scenario on its compromised-account page; apply it when it fits your situation, not as a substitute for recovering the account or checking the transaction record.
If another device may still be signed in, PlayStation provides an option to sign out of all devices through Account Management. See the region-specific sign-in and sign-out instructions. Signing out helps end existing sessions, but does not replace changing a password that may have been exposed.

Keep the checks in order: verify the transaction and subscription history, use the official refund or support guidance if the charge is still unexplained, and secure the account if activity suggests someone else has access. An unknown purchase alone does not establish that the homebrew tool caused it, so avoid assuming a cause before reviewing the account record.
Choose console troubleshooting by its data impact
Do not treat every Safe Mode option as a factory reset. PlayStation documents separate options for settings, database troubleshooting, reset, and system-software reinstallation. The appropriate choice depends on the symptom, and a destructive option should not be your first move just because a tool was involved.
| Action | Purpose | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Restore default settings | Restore settings to their defaults; distinct from a full reset. | Not the same as erasing all user data; check the current console-specific instructions before choosing it. |
| Rebuild database | Safe Mode troubleshooting option for the console’s database. | Distinct from resetting or reinstalling system software; consult PlayStation’s instructions for your console and current option details. |
| Reset or initialize the console | Return the console to a reset state. | Removes user data. |
| Reinstall system software | Reinstall the console’s system software using the official installation process. | Deletes all data and reinstalls the system software. |
PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide distinguishes the available actions, while its reinstallation instructions explicitly warn: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console. This process is often referred to as a ‘factory’ reset, or ‘hard’ reset.” Back up whatever you can before a reset or reinstall. Do not proceed on the assumption that saved games or other user data will remain on the console.
The key comparison is purpose and data impact, not simply how drastic an option sounds. Restoring defaults changes settings; rebuilding the database is a separate troubleshooting action; reset or initialization removes user data; and reinstalling system software both erases data and installs the system software again. Check the current PS4- or PS5-specific Safe Mode descriptions before selecting an option, because the names and menu wording can differ. If you are unsure which action is appropriate, pause and consult PlayStation’s instructions rather than choosing by guesswork.
When a full system-software reinstall makes sense
A reinstall is an option when official troubleshooting calls for it or the console cannot be recovered through less destructive steps. It is not evidence that malware was present, and it is not a universal guarantee that a homebrew-related problem has been removed. The official instructions explain how to reinstall system software; they do not diagnose or certify the removal of software installed by a homebrew tool.

- Confirm the console-specific procedure. Open PlayStation’s official PS5 and PS4 Safe Mode reinstallation guide and follow the section for your console. Localized pages may differ, so use the instructions for your region and check the current steps before starting.
- Back up first. A reinstall deletes console data. Preserve anything you can through the available official backup options before continuing; do not assume data can be recovered afterward.
- Prepare a USB flash drive. PlayStation’s cited procedure requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create the folder names exactly as shown in the current official instructions.
- Use only the official installation file. The cited PS5 instructions specify
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; the PS4 instructions specifyPS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP. Obtain the file from PlayStation, not a third-party download or a file supplied by the tool. - Start Safe Mode and follow the on-screen process. Use the console-specific button sequence and menu choice in PlayStation’s instructions. Do not substitute an ordinary update for a reinstall file or choose a different reset option by guesswork.
- Stop and escalate if the process fails. If the console rejects the official file, cannot complete installation, or remains unusable, contact PlayStation Support or Repairs rather than experimenting with unofficial firmware.
PlayStation’s separate PS5 system-software update guidance also warns against using update data from other sources or methods. A normal software update and a Safe Mode reinstallation are not interchangeable procedures; use the exact official route applicable to the problem.
A USB flash drive is simply the medium used by this official reinstall process; it is not a scanner, treatment, or way to verify whether a console is infected. If you cannot complete the official steps, do not try to substitute files from forums or third-party recovery packages. Sony warns that altered consoles may not operate properly or accept official update data, so further unofficial changes can make diagnosis and recovery harder.

Will a Safe Mode reinstall delete my games and saves?
Yes. PlayStation warns that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console. Reset or initialization also removes user data. Back up what you can before taking a destructive step, and check the current console-specific Safe Mode instructions; restore-default-settings and database rebuild are distinct options.
Should I remove my payment method if I suspect a homebrew tool caused a problem?
Not automatically. First check transaction history and subscriptions, then use PlayStation’s official refund or support guidance for any unexplained charge. PlayStation mentions removing payment methods in its stolen-console scenario, not as a universal requirement for every suspected tool incident.
When should I contact PlayStation Support or Repairs?
Contact Support for lost account access, unauthorized changes to sign-in details, or unavailable recovery email or verification methods. If the official system-software reinstall fails or the console remains unusable, PlayStation directs users to contact support to arrange repair. Warranty and repair eligibility can depend on the circumstances and region.

The Bottom Line
Stop using the suspected tool, protect your email and PlayStation account if activity looks unfamiliar, and check purchases through official account records. For console trouble, start with the relevant official Safe Mode guidance and understand the data impact before choosing an option. A reinstall deletes console data and is not proof of malware removal; if official steps fail, contact PlayStation Support or Repairs rather than experimenting with unofficial firmware.
