If a holiday purchase gets cheaper after you buy it, first check whether the seller offers a post-purchase price adjustment and whether your item and purchase date qualify. If not, a return and repurchase may be possible—but only after you confirm the return terms, costs, and stock. A holiday return extension is not automatically a longer price-adjustment window.
What to check before you contact the retailer
- Identify the seller and transaction. Check your receipt or order page for the seller, purchase date, exact item or model, and whether you bought online or in a store. Marketplace sellers and a retailer’s own sales can follow different terms.
- Look for a post-purchase adjustment policy. A competitor price-match policy does not necessarily cover a price drop at the retailer where you bought the item. Check the deadline, whether the item must be identical and in the same condition, and exclusions for marketplace offers, clearance, bundles, member-only deals, limited quantities, or holiday promotions.
- Save proof of both prices. Keep the receipt or order confirmation and capture the lower price while it is available. Include the seller, item identity, date, and any conditions attached to the offer. The FTC’s general consumer guidance recommends keeping transaction records and checking sale-item return policies; it is not a statement of any retailer’s current terms. - Ask through the retailer’s stated channel. Provide the order number, original price, current price, and proof. Ask whether the offer qualifies and whether any difference would be refunded to your original payment method.
- If the request is declined, compare return-and-rebuy costs. Confirm the item is returnable, the lower offer is still available, and the replacement is the same item from an eligible seller. Account for return shipping, restocking charges, a changing price, or the chance that the item sells out. Do not send the original item back until you understand the retailer’s requirements.
- Check the card you used. Review its current benefits guide or ask the issuer whether purchase price protection applies. Coverage and exclusions vary, and you should not assume this benefit is included.
How policies differ at major U.S. retailers
The examples below reflect U.S. retailer pages checked October 7, 2026. Terms can vary by item, seller, purchase channel, and promotion, so verify the live policy and your order details before acting.

How to make a clear adjustment request
Keep the request factual and specific. Include the order number or receipt, the purchase date, the item’s model or exact listing, the original price, the current price, and a screenshot or link showing the lower offer and its conditions. Ask whether the offer meets the retailer’s policy and, if approved, how the difference will be returned. Target expressly asks for proof for a qualifying adjustment; other retailers may set different requirements.

When returning and buying again may not be worthwhile
Work out the net savings rather than comparing sticker prices alone. Subtract any return shipping or restocking charge, and consider whether the lower offer could expire or sell out before a replacement order is completed. Check whether the replacement comes from the same eligible seller and is the same model and condition. If the return policy or seller terms are unclear, get confirmation before returning the item.
