Give the robot space and don’t touch, move, or try to operate it. If it blocks your route, ask a store employee for help or take another aisle if you can do so safely. If anyone is hurt or property is damaged, tell store staff promptly.
There is no universal shopper procedure for every grocery-store robot: designs and controls differ. Treat the robot as equipment for store staff to manage, not as something to reset yourself.

If a robot is blocking your aisle
- Pause and give it room. Don’t squeeze past if doing so would bring you into contact with the robot, its sensors, or anything it is carrying.
- Ask a store employee for help. Tell them which aisle is blocked and wait for staff to guide you, move the robot, or identify another route.
- Use another aisle if it is clear and convenient. Don’t push a cart into the robot, pull it aside, or reach around it to get through.
These are practical steps for a shopper, not a formal procedure promised by every retailer. Store employees are the appropriate people to handle access and robot controls.

Step back to a comfortable distance and let it pass or stop. If you feel uncertain, move to a clear spot and ask an employee what to do. A robot designed to operate around people can still feel unexpected in a narrow aisle; a safety feature does not guarantee that every encounter will seem predictable.

Some robots are designed to stop when a person or object enters a monitored protective field. For example, The Mobile Robot Company says its J1600 uses safety LiDAR scanners and an independent safety controller to monitor that field. That description applies to the J1600, not necessarily to every retail robot. The manufacturer’s J1600 guidance is for operators, not shoppers.
Don’t try to restart, move, or disable it
Leave buttons, controls, and emergency stops alone. The J1600 manufacturer’s instructions say an operator should clear the protective field and press the LED start/resume button to continue the task. That model-specific instruction does not mean a shopper should approach or reset the robot. Controls and restart procedures depend on the equipment and the work setting.

OSHA’s robotics safety guidance discusses safeguards and emergency stops in industrial workplaces; it is not a shopper’s guide to retail robots. Don’t search for or press an emergency stop in a store. Tell an employee what happened and let trained staff handle the equipment.
If someone is hurt or something is damaged
Notify store staff promptly and explain where and when the incident happened. If someone needs immediate help, ask an employee to contact the appropriate emergency services. The steps that follow depend on the situation; there is no single shopper-specific medical or legal protocol established for robot encounters.

What safety claims and certification do—and don’t—tell you
Public-facing robots are intended to work in changing environments where people may be nearby, but that does not make every movement obvious to every shopper. UL Solutions reported that Simbe’s Tally received UL 3300 certification after an evaluation that included safe autonomous mobility. UL Solutions’ announcement quotes Sherry He, its vice president and general manager of Consumer, Medical and Information Technologies: “Robots that move around and work in places full of people, like grocery stores or shopping aisles, need to meet a very different level of safety.” UL Solutions’ announcement describes that certification; it is not a guarantee that a particular encounter will be trouble-free.
ISO lists ISO/DIS 25688, “Safety guidelines for unmanned stores”, as a draft under development. Its stated scope includes hazard identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, and safety measures for unmanned stores. It is not a finalized, shopper-facing set of instructions for what to do when an aisle robot approaches or blocks a route.
