If an online graphics card is fake, a different model, or materially unlike the listing, stop using and altering it, preserve every piece of evidence, and open a written case through the seller and marketplace immediately. Then ask your card issuer which dispute process fits the transaction and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authorities. Do not return, resell, or dispose of the card until the platform or payment provider gives instructions.
This is a U.S.-focused consumer guide. Marketplace rules, state law, payment protections, and claim deadlines vary by transaction and can change, so use the policy and order page attached to your purchase.

1. Preserve evidence before you touch the card further
Your strongest position is usually before a return shipment, teardown, firmware change, or lost message thread. Save the evidence in its original form and make a separate working copy for uploads.
Save the listing and order record
- Capture the complete listing, including the exact model name, stated memory capacity, clock speeds, condition, photographs, included accessories, price, seller name, return terms, and any authenticity claims.
- Save the listing URL, order confirmation, invoice, payment receipt, tracking history, and delivery date.
- Download or screenshot the seller profile and the marketplace’s return or buyer-protection terms shown for that order.
Photograph the physical evidence
- Photograph the shipping box, label, packing materials, retail box, seals, barcodes, serial labels, PCB, cooler, ports, and accessories from several angles.
- Keep the original image files and their dates. Do not crop away labels in the originals; make cropped copies only when a claim form requires them.
- Keep all packaging. Do not remove, replace, or damage serial labels and security seals.
Preserve communications
Export or screenshot every message with the seller and marketplace, including timestamps, promises, return instructions, and refusals. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises keeping copies of written communications and checking marketplace return and refund deadlines. Do not rely on a phone call alone; after a call, send a written summary through the official message system.
#1 Best Overall
- This is a replacement graphics card board Compatible with Apple iMac A1312 and A1311 models from the 2009 and 2010 series.
- It features 256MB of video memory.
- The board is a suitable replacement part if your graphics card is broken, faulty, or otherwise unusable.
- Each unit is inspected to ensure it is in good working condition before dispatch.
- This replacement graphics card is designed to precisely fit and function correctly within your compatible iMac.
Do not send the card back before opening the official claim and confirming the return address and shipping method. A seller’s private request to use a different address or payment channel can remove marketplace protections.
2. Describe exactly how the card differs from the listing
A precise mismatch is more useful than a general statement that the card “looks fake.” Compare the delivered item with the saved listing and order record, and identify each difference that can be shown.
Examples of material mismatches
- The box or board identifies a different GPU model than the one ordered.
- The installed memory capacity differs from the advertised capacity.
- The serial number, part number, manufacturer markings, connector layout, or cooler design conflicts with the listing.
- The listing promised a new, sealed card but the delivered item is used, repaired, incomplete, or missing advertised accessories.
- The card cannot meet a specification that was central to the purchase, such as the stated memory type or output configuration.
Use side-by-side photographs and quote the relevant listing language. State what you received, what the listing promised, and where the difference appears. Attach only relevant files so the reviewer can follow the comparison quickly.

Use manufacturer help carefully
If the manufacturer or an authorized support channel can assess a model or serial number, request a written response and preserve it. A support reply may confirm that a serial format is invalid, belongs to another product, or cannot be verified. The available consumer guidance does not establish one universal test that authenticates every graphics card, so do not claim certainty based only on a photograph, benchmark, software reading, or online comment.

Keep your language factual. Say that the card appears counterfeit or materially misrepresented and identify the evidence. Do not publish accusations about the seller’s intent beyond what your records establish.
3. Contact the seller, then use the marketplace’s official claim flow
Write to the seller through the account connected to the order. Request a specific remedy—normally a refund or an authentic replacement—and attach the clearest evidence. Give a short response window while preserving the marketplace deadline; do not let a seller’s promise to “look into it” run out your buyer-protection period.
Open the platform case before its deadline
If the seller does not resolve the problem, or the platform directs you to file immediately, open the marketplace’s official return, “item not as described,” or buyer-protection case. The FTC warns that marketplace protections vary and can have short claim windows. The order page, not a general help article, controls the deadline and eligibility for your transaction.
Describe the discrepancy in the platform’s form, upload the listing capture and photographs, and keep the case number. Continue communicating inside the case so the platform can see the record. Avoid closing a case merely because the seller promises a refund; close it only after the refund has actually posted or the platform confirms the resolution.

Follow return instructions exactly
If the marketplace requires a return, use the supplied label or the approved shipping method and send the package to the address shown in the official case. Photograph the packed parcel, retain the tracking number, and monitor delivery. Do not substitute another item, remove labels, or ship to an address sent only by private message.
Some platforms treat suspected counterfeits differently from ordinary “not as described” returns. For example, eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers many transactions that do not match the listing, subject to policy requirements and deadlines. Its policy says that, when there are strong indicators of counterfeit goods, a buyer may not be required to ship the item back and may instead have to cooperate with disposal instructions. That exception is specific to the applicable eBay policy and decision; do not assume another marketplace will use it.
4. Choose the right payment-dispute route
Contact the payment provider promptly, even while a marketplace case is open, and ask which process applies to merchandise that appears counterfeit or was materially misrepresented. Keep the representative’s name, date, instructions, and every document you submit.

Understand the credit-card distinction
The FTC distinguishes qualifying credit-card billing errors—such as merchandise not accepted or not delivered as agreed—from disputes about an item’s quality. For a qualifying billing error, the FTC says the written dispute must be sent within 60 days after the first statement showing the error. A counterfeit or material misrepresentation may involve another contractual, card-network, or state-law process, so ask the issuer which route applies instead of assuming the 60-day rule decides the case.

Send the dispute to the address or channel the issuer specifies, not necessarily the payment address printed on a statement. Include the transaction date and amount, seller, order number, concise mismatch description, evidence index, and the remedy requested. Continue to meet any undisputed payment obligations while the issuer investigates unless it tells you otherwise.
Avoid conflicting cases
Check the terms before filing overlapping disputes. eBay states that it may close a marketplace claim when a buyer files a payment-provider dispute for the same transaction. Other platforms may handle parallel cases differently. Ask both providers how filing one route affects the other, and record the answer.
5. Report the suspected fraud separately
Marketplace report
Use the marketplace’s listing or seller-reporting function. Include the listing number, seller account, order number, and the evidence showing the mismatch. A policy report can help the platform remove listings or investigate accounts, but it is separate from your refund case.

The FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for suspected scams and to their state attorney general for dishonest businesses. USA.gov also points consumers toward the seller or website and appropriate consumer-protection agencies. Provide factual documentation and distinguish what you observed from what you suspect.

The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported scam category in 2022, in a 2023 consumer-protection publication. That statistic covers online-shopping scams broadly; it is not a count of counterfeit graphics-card cases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Do not resell or casually dispose of the card
Do not list a suspected counterfeit as genuine, pass it to another buyer, or describe it as authentic merely because it powers on. eBay’s policy states that counterfeit or fake items are not allowed. Reselling can expose you to a new buyer dispute and potential legal consequences.
Keep the card while the marketplace, issuer, or authorities determine the next step. If the platform gives disposal instructions, follow those instructions and keep proof of compliance. Do not destroy or discard the item before you know whether it must be inspected, returned, or retained as evidence.

- Stop and document: power down if continued use could alter evidence, then save the listing, order record, packaging, labels, photographs, and messages.
- Compare: write a concise list of model, memory, condition, serial, accessory, and specification differences.
- Ask for a remedy in writing: contact the seller inside the platform and request a refund or authentic replacement.
- Open the official marketplace case: do this before the transaction-specific deadline, even if the seller is still responding.
- Ask the payment provider: identify the correct credit- or debit-card dispute process and its documents and deadlines.
- Follow one coordinated process: confirm how a payment dispute affects the marketplace case before filing both.
- Report suspected fraud: submit reports to the marketplace, FTC, and state authorities as appropriate.
- Preserve the item: return or dispose of it only under documented official instructions.
8. Common mistakes that weaken a claim
- Returning the card before opening a platform case or saving the listing.
- Allowing a seller’s informal extension to exceed the marketplace deadline.
- Communicating only by phone and keeping no written record.
- Removing serial labels, changing firmware, opening the cooler, or running modifications that complicate inspection.
- Sending the package to a private address rather than the address in the official case.
- Assuming a 60-day credit-card billing-error period covers every counterfeit or quality dispute.
- Filing a second dispute without checking whether the first provider will close or reject the case.
- Posting public accusations or reselling the card before authenticity and ownership issues are resolved.
9. What a complete claim packet should contain
Prepare one clearly named folder or PDF index containing:
- The listing URL and dated screenshots of the model, specifications, condition, price, seller, and return terms.
- Order confirmation, invoice, payment record, tracking, and delivery date.
- Photos of packaging, labels, serial numbers, ports, board, cooler, and accessories.
- A one-page comparison identifying each mismatch and pointing to the supporting image or listing capture.
- All seller and platform messages, with timestamps.
- Any written manufacturer or authorized-support response.
- Return tracking, carrier receipt, and delivery confirmation if a return is authorized.
- Notes from calls with the marketplace, issuer, or agency, including dates and case numbers.
This organization lets a reviewer verify the transaction without guessing which photograph or specification matters.
10. Jurisdiction and policy limits
This guidance uses U.S. FTC and U.S.-marketplace materials. Your rights can change with your country, state, transaction date, payment method, seller location, and the platform’s terms. Neither a marketplace report nor a card dispute guarantees recovery, and the available evidence cannot establish the authenticity of a particular graphics card or the seller’s intent by itself. Verify the current policy and deadline shown for your order before choosing a remedy.
Act promptly, keep the record intact, and let the official channel decide whether the card must be returned, inspected, retained, or disposed of.
