Shut the computer down immediately, switch off the power supply, and unplug the mains cable before touching the GPU connector. Do not keep gaming, repeatedly test the card, or reseat a connector that is visibly melted, deformed, discolored, or producing an unusual smell. A damaged cable, adapter, plug, or GPU socket must be taken out of service and assessed by the relevant manufacturer.
First response when a GPU connector is hot
Treat abnormal heat as a hardware-safety problem, not as a normal temperature reading. Use the operating system’s shutdown command if the computer is still responsive. Then set the power supply’s rear switch to off, remove the AC power cord from the wall or surge protector, and wait until the system is completely disconnected before opening the case.

Do not touch the connector while the system is energized. Do not power the PC back on to “see whether it happens again.” Repeated heating can worsen a poor connection and may enlarge damage that was initially limited to the plug or adapter.
When a warm connector becomes a stop-use condition
There is no safe way to judge a damaged connector by temperature alone. Stop using the system if you find any of the following after disconnecting mains power:

ASUS Support’s troubleshooting instructions dated June 4, 2025, say to replace a cable that appears deformed or overheated. Its ROG troubleshooting guidance, edited August 3, 2026, says not to continue using a cable or adapter that shows visible damage or produces an unusual smell. Those instructions apply to the damaged part, not merely to a cosmetic mark elsewhere on the case.
How to inspect the cable and GPU safely
Perform the inspection with the PSU switched off and the mains lead removed. Use a bright light and look without forcing any plug or pin.
1. Examine both ends of the cable
Check the connector that enters the graphics card and every connector on an adapter. Inspect the PSU-side plug as well. Look for melted edges, gaps in the housing, pushed-back terminals, discoloration, debris, and signs that a contact has overheated. Follow the entire cable length for cuts, flattened insulation, or a sharp fold immediately beside the plug.

2. Check adapter joints and every input
If the graphics card uses a multi-plug adapter, inspect each input separately. Every required input must be connected to the correct PSU cables, and each plug must be fully inserted. A problem at one input can heat the adapter even when the other connectors look normal.

3. Inspect the GPU socket
Look into the graphics card’s power socket for bent, broken, deformed, discolored, or melted contacts. Do not scrape, bend, or attempt to rebuild a damaged socket based on this guide. A damaged socket is a graphics-card service issue; buying another cable is not a repair for damage on the card itself.
4. Stop if you find physical damage
Once a cable, adapter, plug, or socket is visibly damaged, do not reconnect it for another test. Keep the parts disconnected and contact the GPU or PSU manufacturer for model-specific service instructions.
If nothing looks damaged: verify seating before any reconnection
Only consider a reconnection when the cable and socket are free of visible damage and the GPU and PSU manufacturers’ instructions permit it. A connector should be fully inserted, flush with its socket, and show no visible gap. Confirm this at the graphics-card end, at every adapter input, and at the PSU end.

Before closing the case, make sure the side panel will not press against the plug. Leave natural clearance around the connector and route the cable without sideways tension. Seasonic’s cable guidance warns against bending or applying force close to the connector. A cable that is fully inserted can still be strained by a tight bend or a panel pushing it sideways.
Use only a cable compatible with the exact PSU
Modular power-supply cables that look alike can use different internal wiring. Never substitute a generic modular cable simply because its connector fits. Use the cable supplied with the exact PSU model, or one that the PSU manufacturer explicitly approves for that model.
This requirement applies when replacing a damaged cable and when changing from an adapter to a native cable. Confirm the full PSU model designation, not just the brand or wattage. A cable approved for one model family is not automatically approved for another.

Why a GPU connector can overheat
Seasonic describes inadequate contact between a 12VHPWR plug and the GPU socket as a condition that can raise electrical resistance and produce heat. In its November 18, 2022 RTX 4090 update, NVIDIA said its findings suggested that connectors not fully plugged into the graphics card were a common issue among the cases known at that time.
Those statements identify installation and contact problems found by the manufacturers; they do not prove that every hot or melted connector has one cause, nor do they establish that the user is always at fault. Damage, debris, a deformed terminal, an incompatible cable, or mechanical force on the plug can all require a different remedy. The practical response is therefore to inspect the complete connection and escalate any damage rather than assume a new adapter will solve it.
Bundled adapter versus a native PSU cable
Neither option is universally safer. The deciding factors are compatibility, complete connection, seating, and cable routing. GIGABYTE’s 2022 FAQ advised using the adapter included with the graphics card and noted that aftermarket designs had not been officially tested by NVIDIA or GIGABYTE at that time. Later ASUS guidance permits a native cable supplied with, or explicitly approved for, the exact PSU model. These are hardware- and manufacturer-specific instructions, not blanket approval for every adapter or cable.

| Check | Bundled GPU adapter | Native PSU cable |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Use the adapter supplied for that graphics card and connect every required input. | Use only a cable supplied with or explicitly approved for the exact PSU model. |
| Connection points | Verify the GPU plug and every adapter input, plus the PSU-side plugs. | Verify the GPU plug and the PSU-side plug(s). |
| Seating | Each joint must be fully inserted, flush, and free of a visible gap. | The same full-insertion and no-gap check applies at both ends. |
| Routing | Keep the bundle clear of the side panel, avoid sideways tension, and do not sharply fold it near the GPU plug. | Use natural clearance and avoid bending or force close to the connector. |
| After damage | Do not reuse a melted or deformed adapter; a damaged GPU socket requires card service. | Do not reuse a damaged cable; replace it only with an exact-model-approved part. |
| Evidence of approval | GIGABYTE’s cited 2022 advice favored the card’s included adapter. | ASUS’s later guidance allows a native cable only when supplied with or explicitly approved for the installed PSU. |
What to do after a clean inspection
If no damage is visible and reconnection is allowed by the manufacturers, use this sequence:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Confirm that the replacement or existing cable is approved for the exact PSU model.
- Connect every required adapter input or PSU-side plug; do not leave an adapter input unused when the card’s instructions require it.
- Insert the GPU connector straight and completely until the housing is flush and no gap is visible.
- Check the PSU-side connection using the same visual standard rather than relying on a latch sound.
- Route the cable with clearance from the case side panel and without a sharp fold or sideways pull next to the plug.
- Only then follow the GPU maker’s instructions for returning the system to service. If heat, odor, discoloration, or a warning returns, shut down, disconnect mains power again, and stop using the system.
When to contact the GPU or PSU manufacturer
Contact the graphics-card maker when the GPU socket or its contacts show any damage, or when the card produces a warning after the prescribed seating and routing checks. Contact the PSU maker when the PSU-side connector or the supplied modular cable is damaged, overheated, or of uncertain compatibility. Tell support the exact GPU and PSU models, whether an adapter or native cable was used, and which connector shows heat or deformation.
Do not assume that an old warranty announcement applies today. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 statement dated November 18, 2022, reported about 50 cases globally and said NVIDIA and its partners were committed to an expedited RMA process regardless of the cable or card used. That was a dated, model-specific commitment; current eligibility depends on the manufacturer, model, region, and warranty terms in force when you make the claim.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Continuing to use a warm connector: abnormal heat accompanied by smell, discoloration, or deformation is a stop-use condition.
- Reseating while powered: disconnect mains power before touching or inspecting any connector.
- Replacing only the cable when the socket is damaged: a melted GPU socket needs manufacturer assessment.
- Using a cable from another modular PSU: similar-looking plugs do not guarantee compatible wiring.
- Trusting the latch click: verify a flush fit and no visible gap at every connection.
- Forcing the side panel closed: leave clearance so the panel does not press on the plug.
- Assuming one cause explains every failure: incomplete contact is a manufacturer-reported finding, not a universal diagnosis.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited manufacturer guidance provides immediate handling, inspection, seating, cable-compatibility, and escalation steps. It does not establish a current population-wide failure rate for GPU power connectors, prove one cause for every melted plug, or guarantee warranty coverage for every graphics card and region. GIGABYTE’s adapter advice and NVIDIA’s case count are dated, while the newer ASUS material is model-support guidance rather than a universal standard. Follow the current instructions for the exact GPU and PSU installed in your computer.
