Check the exact error, correct any entry mistakes, and contact the agency handling the service to ask which alternative verification routes it accepts and whether the problem affects a deadline or your case status. An automated mismatch alone does not establish that you are ineligible.
The examples below concern U.S. federal services. They are not one set of rules for every government agency or program.

First identify where verification failed
Note the service you were trying to use, the exact error message, and whether you were signing in, applying for a benefit, or completing another request. Login.gov’s help page uses errors such as “We couldn’t find records matching my personal information” and “We couldn’t find records matching my address.” Those messages point to a verification mismatch, but the service or agency must tell you what it means for your application or case.

- If you can sign in but cannot complete a benefit or service request, contact the agency responsible for that request.
- Ask the agency to confirm whether the failed attempt was recorded and whether any application, response, or appeal deadline still applies. Do not assume verification trouble pauses a deadline.
Correct personal-information and address mismatches
Review the information you entered
For Login.gov verification, check the spelling of your name, date of birth, identification details, Social Security number, and address against the information on your documents and in the relevant records. If an ID image was misread and the first name, last name, or birth date is wrong, Login.gov’s instructions say to restart and submit the ID images again; those identity fields cannot be changed independently of the ID image.

Check which address the service needs
For Login.gov, enter your residential address if it differs from your mailing address. If you moved recently and the current address does not match, the help page suggests trying a previous address. It also explains that you can change the current address after entering your Social Security number if that address differs from the one on your ID. These instructions apply to Login.gov’s flow, not automatically to another agency’s form. See Login.gov’s identity-verification guidance.
Ask the responsible agency what alternatives it accepts
If you do not have an item requested by the online flow, or correcting the information does not resolve the mismatch, contact the agency for the service you are trying to access. Login.gov specifically directs users to that agency to ask what can be done instead. The agency or program determines which alternatives it accepts; a route offered for one service may not be available for another.
When you contact the agency, ask concise, specific questions:

- Which documents or other proof can I use for this exact service?
- Is another verification method available, such as verification by mail, telephone, an appointment, or in-person processing?
- Can staff review the mismatch or help me complete the request another way?
- Does the failed verification affect an application deadline, benefit status, or appeal period, and how should I document the attempt?
These are questions to ask, not remedies or deadline extensions guaranteed across agencies.
Login.gov options depend on the agency and service
Login.gov’s general online identity-verification flow calls for a U.S. driver’s license, mobile driver’s license, state ID, or passport book or card; a Social Security number; and a U.S. phone number or mailing address. Depending on the flow, it may ask for ID images and a selfie, compare personal information with records, and verify a phone number. If you cannot meet the requirements or the process still fails, contact the agency whose service you need.
Verification by mail
Some agencies allow a mailed letter instead of phone verification. Login.gov estimates that the code letter takes 5–10 business days to arrive, and the code expires 21 days after the request. If you need access before it arrives, contact the agency rather than assuming the letter route will meet your timing needs. In-person verification at USPS
Some Login.gov partner agencies offer a route in which you complete online steps and bring the same driver’s license or state ID used online, along with the emailed barcode, to a participating USPS location. Login.gov says the barcode expires seven days after the online information step and that an email result should arrive within 24 hours after the post-office visit. Its current instructions say passport books, passport cards, and mobile driver’s licenses cannot be used for this in-person route, even though Login.gov accepts them in other contexts. Confirm that the agency and service participate, and check the current instructions before going.

Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says Login.gov and ID.me are its two identity-verification and sign-in services for my Social Security; you need only one for account access. Account verification and verification for a particular SSA service are distinct questions.
SSA’s March 26, 2025 announcement described a policy effective April 14, 2025: people unable to use my Social Security for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits would need to prove identity at an SSA office, while applicants for SSDI, Medicare, or SSI who could not use an account could complete claims by telephone. The announcement also described dire-need exceptions and in-person processing for some direct-deposit changes. Because this is dated policy, check SSA’s current instructions for your service before relying on those routes: SSA’s March 26, 2025 announcement.

For a Social Security card request, SSA generally requires evidence to be original or certified by the issuing agency; photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted. A current government photo ID is typical, but alternatives depend on citizenship or status and the type of request. Use SSA’s instructions for your circumstances rather than treating one document list as universal: SSA’s acceptable documents guidance. Federal regulation 20 CFR § 422.107 lists several possible forms of identity evidence for Social Security number purposes and says a birth record alone is not sufficient evidence of identity for that purpose; it does not set a universal standard for all agency services. See 20 CFR § 422.107.
Internal Revenue Service
For the specific IRS Letter 6483C identity-verification process, an in-person appointment requires a primary identity document matching your current name and birth date and a document showing a current valid U.S. address. The appointment confirmation may specify additional documents, including proof of your full Social Security number. Follow the notice and appointment instructions for your case: IRS identity and tax return verification guidance.

Choose a route by checking fit and timing
If an agency offers more than one way to verify, compare them before choosing:
- Participation: Does the route work for this agency and the specific service?
- Evidence: Which identity and address documents does the route accept?
- Timing: How long does it take, and does a code or barcode expire?
- Method: Is it remote, by mail, by telephone, or in person, and what must you bring or do first?
- Case deadlines: Has the agency confirmed whether using that route affects your application or appeal deadline?
Login.gov’s published mail and USPS time windows are specific to those options; they do not establish a general rule for other agencies or deadlines. Use the official instructions for the service you need and ask the agency to clarify anything that could affect your case.
