If a purchased game differs sharply from the reviews or store description, pause play, document the mismatch, check the refund rules for the store and country where you paid, and submit an honest request promptly if you may qualify. A refund is never automatic: eligibility depends on the seller, timing, downloads or playtime, the condition of the content, and sometimes local consumer law.
Start by saving your receipt, the product page, the reviews you relied on, the installed game version, and evidence of the actual problem. Describe a specific discrepancy—such as an advertised feature being absent, the game failing to run as represented, or a technical fault preventing use—rather than simply saying that you disliked it.

First, preserve your options
Pause downloads, streaming and play when a refund may be possible
Some stores measure eligibility from the moment a download or stream starts; Steam also considers playtime. If you already know the game is materially different from what was represented, avoid adding more use while you check the policy. Do not delete the purchase, alter files or make a claim that is not accurate. A short diagnostic session may be necessary to establish a fault, but record what you did and when.
Record the transaction details
- Purchase date and time, order number and price.
- The account and country storefront used for payment.
- Whether the title was downloaded, streamed, launched or played, and for how long if the platform records it.
- The platform, console or PC hardware, operating-system version and game version.
- Whether the transaction was made directly with the platform or through a key reseller, retailer or other third party.
Capture the evidence before the listing changes
Save a screenshot or PDF of the store description, system requirements, edition contents and any feature or performance statement that shaped your decision. Keep the receipt and the review links or screenshots, including each review’s publication date. If the problem is technical, capture error messages, reproducible steps, video or screenshots, and relevant update notes. Evidence is most useful when it shows exactly what was promised, what version was tested and what happened on your system.

Check the policy for the seller and region
Refund rules are not universal. A key purchased from a third party generally has to be taken back to that seller; the platform that activated the key may not be the merchant that can refund it. The following are the published general conditions described by the major stores. Check the live policy attached to your account and country before submitting.
| Store or route | Published general condition | Where to start | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours played. | Steam Support | Valve says requests outside those rules can still be submitted for review. Purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys, are not refunded through this policy. The policy page was last updated April 23, 2024; verify the current version. |
| PlayStation Store, United States | Generally request within 14 days and do not download or stream the game. | Transaction History, select the purchase, choose “Request Refund,” then follow the prompts. | Faulty content may qualify under additional rights. The US support page does not display a publication date and was accessed in 2026. |
| PlayStation Store, United Kingdom | Generally cancel within 14 days, provided downloading or streaming has not started. | Use the current UK cancellation/refund support route for the account. | A started download or stream is normally ineligible unless the content is faulty. Automatic downloads can start if that setting is enabled. UK and US terms should not be treated as one worldwide rule. |
| Xbox or Microsoft Store | Digital games are generally not returnable unless the offer or applicable law makes the buyer eligible. | Xbox order history: select the item, choose “Request a refund,” provide a reason and submit. | Submitting the form does not promise approval. Microsoft distinguishes its own purchases from transactions made through another retailer. |
| Third-party retailer or key seller | Apply the merchant’s policy and any rights that apply to that transaction. | Contact the seller named on the receipt. | Steam, PlayStation or Microsoft may be unable to reverse a sale they did not make. |
These are policy conditions, not guarantees and not statistics about how often games fail to match reviews. Store policies can preserve rights under local law, especially where digital content is faulty. Your country, the merchant of record and the exact transaction determine what additional remedies may exist.
Work out what actually did not match
Separate a review’s opinion from a factual promise
A review is an assessment by its author under particular conditions, not a warranty that every buyer will have the same experience. “The combat felt repetitive” is subjective. “The advertised cooperative mode is absent from the purchased edition” is a checkable product claim. A lower-than-expected frame rate may be a configuration issue, a known defect, or a difference between the reviewer’s hardware and yours; identify which before writing the request.

Align the dates and versions
- Write down the review’s publication date and the game version or build it names.
- Compare the reviewer’s platform, console generation, graphics settings and other hardware with yours.
- Note your installed version and every relevant patch released since the review.
- Check whether an update added, removed or changed the feature you expected.
A launch review may describe an earlier build, while a later patch may have changed performance or content. Conversely, a review may have evaluated a feature that is limited to one edition, platform or region. This comparison helps you explain a mismatch without implying that a store must refund every disappointed customer.
Describe a reproducible problem
State what you did, what you expected and what happened. For example: “On the advertised PC configuration, selecting the campaign causes a crash before the title screen” is more useful than “It is broken.” Include the frequency, error text, whether reinstalling or verifying files changed anything, and whether the issue affects the whole product or one mode. If the concern is missing content, identify the exact edition and the wording on the product page.
Submit the request through the correct route
Steam
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select the purchase and choose the refund option offered for that transaction.
- Explain the concrete mismatch, include the purchase date and playtime context, and attach or reference supporting evidence where the form permits.
- Submit the request and keep the confirmation. If you fall outside Steam’s general rules, you can still ask Valve to review it; approval is discretionary.
Valve’s policy expressly says, “There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.” That invitation is a review opportunity, not an entitlement, and it does not cover a purchase made from another seller.

PlayStation Store
- Open your account’s Transaction History.
- Select the game or add-on connected to the problem.
- Choose “Request Refund” and complete the on-screen questions.
- Use the storefront policy for your account’s country, not a guide written for another region.
Be precise about whether downloading or streaming began and whether you are reporting a fault. PlayStation’s US support wording states, “In addition to the below, you may have additional rights under applicable local law, such as if your content is faulty.” That statement does not determine the result in every country; it tells you to consider rights beyond the standard store checklist.

Xbox or Microsoft Store
- Open Xbox order history for the Microsoft account that paid.
- Select the game or app and choose “Request a refund.”
- Give the factual reason, including the version, platform and specific failure or misrepresentation.
- Submit the form and retain the case details. Wait for Microsoft’s decision rather than treating submission as approval.
Another retailer or a code seller
Use the support and refund process shown on that seller’s receipt. Explain that the key or license was sold by that merchant and provide the order number. The platform may be able to help with an account or activation problem, but it generally cannot refund a transaction it did not process.
Write a clear, honest explanation
A good request is short enough to read but specific enough to verify. Tie each statement to a record: the product page, review date, build number, error message or attempted troubleshooting. Do not claim that a review guaranteed a particular experience, and do not describe a preference as a defect.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Check the reason, then correct missing facts
Read the denial carefully. It may refer to playtime, a started download, the wrong merchant, an incomplete form or a regional rule. If the response overlooks a documented fault or uses the wrong transaction, reply through the same case with the order number and concise evidence. Avoid opening multiple contradictory cases.
Escalate a genuine defect through the appropriate channel
If the game does not function as described, contact the seller’s fault or digital-content support route and keep the case number. A platform’s voluntary refund policy is not necessarily the full extent of your rights. Official PlayStation guidance in both the United States and United Kingdom, and Steam and Microsoft guidance in their own terms, recognize that applicable local law may affect faulty-content claims. A consumer-protection authority or qualified local adviser can explain the rule for your location; the facts supplied here do not establish a jurisdiction-specific outcome.

Do not overstate what happened
A subjective disappointment, a difficult game, or a review that emphasized different qualities may not meet a store’s refund standard. Do not allege deception, a hardware defect or missing content unless your records support it. Accurate descriptions give support staff a workable way to distinguish an expectation gap from a product fault.
Use the experience to evaluate future purchases
- Read the store description for edition, platform and region restrictions rather than relying on a headline feature.
- Prefer reviews that identify the tested build, hardware and settings when performance matters.
- Look for post-launch patches and current player reports if the review is older than the installed version.
- Check the refund window before downloading or streaming, and note whether automatic downloads are enabled.
- Buy from the merchant whose policy you understand; a third-party key can have a different support path from the platform where you activate it.
The practical standard is simple: preserve evidence, identify a specific and verifiable mismatch, follow the policy for the seller and region, and ask promptly without assuming approval. That approach gives a legitimate request the clearest chance of being reviewed while keeping your account of the problem accurate.
