If a station cannot sell your fuel grade, check a reliable local update or call another forecourt before detouring. Drive to a confirmed alternative only if you have enough fuel to reach it safely; if you do not, stop somewhere safe and arrange another way to travel or appropriate roadside help. One station’s stockout does not, by itself, mean national rationing has begun.
What should I do if the petrol station has run out?
- Confirm another option before setting off. Check a current local availability update or call another station directly. Stock can change quickly, so an old listing or an unconfirmed guess is not a reliable reason to make a detour.
- Check whether you can reach it on the fuel you have. If a confirmed alternative is within your vehicle’s safe remaining range, go there. Do not drive around looking for a station if you may not have enough fuel to reach one.
- If you cannot reach a confirmed station, stop safely. Move somewhere that does not block the forecourt or create a traffic hazard while you decide what to do. Arrange another travel option or contact appropriate roadside assistance.
- Reconsider whether the trip needs to happen now. If practical, postpone it or use public transport, walking, cycling or a lift or car share. A UK government fuel-disruption risk document recommends alternative transport and limiting journeys to essential travel.
These are practical steps for drivers, not a quoted government procedure for an individual forecourt stockout.

Can I drive to another petrol station if mine is out of fuel?
Yes, if you have confirmed that another station can sell your fuel grade and you have enough fuel to reach it safely. Call ahead where possible, especially if the alternative requires a detour. If your remaining fuel is insufficient or uncertain, do not gamble on finding another open pump; stop safely and seek another way to continue your journey or roadside help.

Do not treat a fuel can as the routine solution to a local stockout. The Health and Safety Executive warns that petrol is highly flammable and says, “Don’t store petrol unless you have to.” If you must fill a portable petrol container, place it on the ground while filling and follow the station’s safety instructions. This HSE guidance concerns petrol; it should not be read as a statement of equivalent storage rules for diesel. HSE: Staying safe while storing and using petrol

Does one station running out mean fuel rationing has started?
No. A local shortage of one grade at one forecourt does not establish that national restrictions or rationing are in force. The National Emergency Plan for Fuel is a contingency framework for major disruption. Government says activation would be considered only if significant and widespread disruption to oil supply were possible, and that the response would depend on the circumstances, starting with the least invasive measures. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero: National Emergency Plan for Fuel response tools
What the national plan could involve
The plan describes options, not instructions currently applying to ordinary drivers. Measures to maintain supply include industry coordination, reserve fuel tankers and drivers, possible temporary relaxation of drivers’ hours for specific operations, and release of emergency oil stocks in a significant global supply disruption. In a severe national shortage, possible controls could include priority access at designated stations for emergency and critical-service vehicles, priority bulk deliveries to critical services, priority road diesel for commercial vehicles supporting key supply chains, and limits on public purchases per visit or sale hours.

- 【Auto-Stop Sensor for Controlled Refueling】The nozzle sensor on this Keimi fuel transfer pump is designed to stop the flow when liquid reaches the sensor, helping limit overfilling during attended use. Keep the nozzle in position, monitor the tank, and switch the pump off after transfer.
- 【3.2 Gallon per Min, Three Power Options】Run this battery-powered fuel transfer pump with four AA batteries for regular use, two AA batteries as a temporary backup, or USB power from a suitable source. AA batteries are not included.
- 【Four Can Adapters and 51-Inch Hose】Includes 2.0, 2.1, 2.75, and 3.75-inch adapters for many North American fuel cans. The long corrugated hose improves reach; confirm the can opening before use.
- 【Gas Can Pump for Vehicles and Equipment】Transfers gasoline, diesel, and compatible light oils for lawn mowers, generators, tractors, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, and other equipment identified in the instructions.
- 【Portable, Attended Operation】Secure the adapter, fully insert the intake tube and nozzle, and use the fuel transfer pump in a ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and flames. Do not leave the pump running unattended.
What was the latest national supply statement?
In a UK Parliament answer on 20 April 2026, Martin McCluskey, responding for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, said: “We are not currently at, nor approaching, the threshold for their use, and fuel continues to be available through normal supply routes.” The answer also described the UK as well supplied across fuel types and the plan as precautionary. This was a dated national assessment, not a live check of stock at a particular station; forecourt availability can change. UK Parliament written answer, question 125219

Keep journeys to essential travel where possible and consider alternatives before using more fuel. A government fuel-disruption risk document recommends alternative transport and minimising journeys to essential trips. It also says shortages at stations in September 2021 were caused by consumer panic buying rather than supply-chain issues; that is a historical account of that episode, not proof of the cause of every later stockout. - SLIDABLE CLAMP FOR FUEL CANS OF DIFFERENT DEPTHS Equipped with a single 80‑inch hose paired with a slidable mounting clamp, this pump lets you freely reposition the sturdy clamp along the hose. It works flawlessly with containers ranging from compact mini gas cans to tall high‑capacity barrels. Adjusting the clamp position keeps the intake hose running smoothly inside the container. No more issues such as kinked hoses inside small gas cans, or the intake end failing to reach fuel liquid in tall barrels. Compact and highly portable, this all‑in‑one pump takes up minimal storage space on your tool shelf.
- UNIVERSAL FIT — NO EXTRA ADAPTERS REQUIRED Featuring an innovative slidable clamp assembly, this pump securely mounts onto everything from small gas jugs to large‑size barrels. There is no need to source, swap out, or keep extra adapters on hand, eliminating the risk of mismatched or ill‑fitting adapter parts. Unlike simple hose‑insert‑style pumps that sit loosely inside openings, our rubber‑capped sliding clamp creates a tight gap‑free seal against the container opening. This barrier keeps debris and foreign particles from falling into your fuel container, for simpler, cleaner, and safer fuel transfer. (Note: Container opening must measure larger than 1.25 inches.)
- INTEGRATED AUTO‑STOP & HAND NOZZLE DESIGN Most alternative fuel pumps only support either auto‑stop filling or manual nozzle operation, while our pump merges both functions in one robust unit. Operate manually through the hand nozzle for precise volume control, or switch to hands‑free full‑tank filling using the auto‑stop mode. Thanks to its responsive auto‑stop sensor, the pump shuts off fuel flow immediately upon detecting a full container. Reinforced inner rubber gaskets eliminate leaks and spills, ensuring every fuel transfer stays neat and secure.
- MULTIPLE POWER‑SUPPLY OPTIONS This pump supports flexible power‑input solutions: 4 AA batteries (batteries not included), USB Type‑C power input, or DC 12V battery clips for connecting directly to vehicle‑mounted storage batteries. With versatile power choices, you can conveniently pump Gasoline, Kerosene, Diesel, DEF, and non‑potable water virtually anytime and anywhere.
- EASY‑TO‑INSTALL & USER‑FRIENDLY OPERATION Boasting an integrated pump‑and‑nozzle construction alongside a single operating button, this unit combines auto‑stop functionality, manual hand nozzle and universal slidable clamp all‑in‑one. It supports convenient one‑hand operation, letting you start or stop pumping at any moment for precise fuel transfer.
