Start with the itemized invoice or passenger ticket, not the checkout total. Separate the restaurant or ride fare from platform, delivery and other fee lines, then ask the app to identify the taxable value, service category, GST rate and CGST/SGST or IGST split for the disputed line. If the calculation or invoice is unsupported, request a corrected invoice and refund. If support does not resolve the matter, file a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline and attach your receipt, payment proof and correspondence.
First, preserve the evidence
Download the tax invoice or ride ticket before the order or trip disappears from the app. Save a PDF where available and take screenshots of every screen showing the calculation. Keep the order or trip ID, transaction date and time, itemized subtotal, discounts, delivery charge, platform or convenience fee, GST lines, total paid and payment confirmation.

The transaction date matters because GST notifications and rate tables can be amended. Record the state shown for the supplier and recipient, the provider’s GSTIN if displayed, and whether the tax is labelled CGST plus SGST or IGST. Do not edit screenshots; retain the original email or downloadable file as well.
- Food item or restaurant-service amount
- Delivery, handling, packing or other logistics line

- Payment receipt and any refund already issued
Why one checkout can contain different GST treatments
GST is applied to a taxable supply, not automatically to every rupee in the final checkout total. A food app may show restaurant service, a platform service and a delivery component as separate supplies or fee lines. Compare each line’s taxable value and rate with the description on the invoice.

Restaurant service: 5% in the stated category
In a written Rajya Sabha answer dated 1 April 2025, the Ministry of Finance stated that restaurant service other than at specified premises is taxable at 5% without input tax credit, whether supplied through an electronic commerce operator or directly by the restaurant. That statement concerns the restaurant service. It does not establish that every fee on the same screen must also be taxed at 5%.
Platform or app service: 18% according to the Finance Ministry answer
The same answer says that other services supplied by food-delivery apps, including platform services, are taxed at 18%. If an invoice lists a platform or technology fee separately, ask the app to identify that service and show the taxable amount on which 18% was calculated. A platform line should not be silently combined with the restaurant line when checking the arithmetic.
Delivery charges remain a fact-specific question
The Finance Ministry reported that a proposal concerning GST on food delivery connected with app orders was placed before the 55th GST Council meeting on 21 December 2024. The meeting record described differing views on whether delivery is included in restaurant service and recommended further examination by the Fitment Committee. The official material available for this article does not verify a later final clarification. Therefore, do not describe every delivery charge as settled at either 5% or 18% without checking the notification and guidance applicable on your order date.

How to test a food-order GST calculation
- Circle the disputed line. Decide whether the complaint concerns restaurant food, delivery, a platform fee or another separately listed service.
- Find the taxable value. The invoice should show, or support should be able to explain, the amount to which GST was applied. It may not equal the headline food subtotal after discounts and exclusions.
- Recalculate the line. Multiply the stated taxable value by the stated rate. Check whether the result is rounded and whether CGST and SGST are each half of the combined domestic rate.
- Check the tax split. An intra-state supply may show CGST and SGST; an inter-state supply may show IGST. Ask why the split is used if the invoice is unclear.
- Compare with the order date. Use the rule and notification effective on that date, not an old screenshot or a rate quoted in a forum post.
For example, a customer asking how ₹97.41 GST appeared on a ₹1,710 food order cannot establish an error by dividing the tax by the displayed total. That quotient is about 5.7%, but the total may contain multiple taxable bases, fees, discounts or rounding. Only the invoice’s line-by-line bases and rates can show whether ₹97.41 is correct.
What to check on a ride-hailing ticket
Passenger transport does not have one universal “cab GST” rate. CBIC’s published rate table distinguishes categories such as radio taxi, specified contract-carriage services and a general other-passenger-transport category, with conditions attached to some entries. The ride type, the applicable notification and amendments, and the journey date all matter.
A separate notification places tax-payment responsibility on the electronic commerce operator for a radio taxi or motorcab booked through an app in the specified circumstances. That responsibility tells you who may need to account for the tax; it does not by itself prove that the amount on your particular ticket is wrong.

Ride-ticket checklist
- Identify the vehicle or service description used by the app, rather than relying on the generic word “cab.”
- Check whether the fare, tolls, booking fee, cancellation fee and other charges are separate supplies or reimbursements.
- Look for the taxable amount, GST rate, tax split and supplier or operator identity.
- Match the ticket to the actual journey date and pickup state.
- Ask which CBIC category and notification the app used if the ticket only says “GST.”
Your digital ticket may be the tax invoice
CBIC states that, for passenger-transportation services, a ticket in any form may serve as a tax invoice. Save the digital ticket even if the app does not offer a document titled “tax invoice.” CBIC’s invoice-rules guidance describes a general 30-day period for issuing invoices for taxable services, subject to specified exceptions. If no ticket or invoice is available, ask the app to issue one and keep the request reference.
Ask app support for a line-by-line answer
Use the in-app help route or the support email shown on the receipt. Put the order or trip ID and date in the first line so the case can be matched to the transaction. Ask precise questions instead of saying only that the tax “looks high.”
- What service does this GST line cover: restaurant service, delivery, platform service, passenger transport or another fee?
- What is the taxable value before GST, and how was it derived after discounts or credits?
- What rate and notification or category were applied on the transaction date?
- Is the amount split into CGST and SGST or charged as IGST, and why?
- Can you provide an itemized tax invoice or corrected ticket showing the calculation?
- If the line is incorrect, when will the invoice be corrected and the excess refunded?
Attach the saved invoice and payment proof. Keep the case number, timestamps and every response. If the company edits the receipt, retain the original version so the change is traceable.

When the app’s explanation indicates an error
Request two remedies separately: a corrected invoice and a refund of the excess amount. A refund without a corrected document can leave the tax record unclear, while a corrected invoice without the money returned does not resolve an overcharge. Ask for confirmation of the amount, payment method and expected credit date.
Do not threaten a legal conclusion that the evidence cannot support. State the exact line, taxable base, rate shown and arithmetic difference. If the app says the delivery treatment depends on a pending or later clarification, ask it to identify the rule used on your transaction date and to explain why that rule applies.
Escalate an unresolved complaint to the National Consumer Helpline
If support closes the case without a calculation, refuses to provide an invoice, or does not return an admitted overcharge, use the National Consumer Helpline (NCH). The Department of Consumer Affairs lists registration by phone, web portal, mobile app, UMANG, WhatsApp, SMS and email. Its contact page lists 1915 and 1800 11 4000; phone service is generally stated as 8 AM to 8 PM daily except national holidays. Check the live official contact page before filing because channels and hours can change.
Best Value
Since September 2025, the Department of Consumer Affairs has described a dedicated GST grievance category on INGRAM, including an e-commerce subcategory. Choose the category that most closely matches the app transaction and explain whether the dispute concerns the tax rate, taxable base, missing invoice, refusal to refund or an unexplained fee.
Attach a complete evidence bundle
- Original itemized invoice or passenger ticket
- Order or trip date and identification number
- Payment statement or bank, card or wallet confirmation
- Screenshots showing each fee and GST line
- Your written calculation, if the taxable base is printed
- Support complaint number and the full exchange
- Any promised refund date or corrected invoice
Submit a factual timeline and retain the NCH docket number. The helpline is a consumer-grievance channel; it does not replace checking the applicable GST notification for a particular transaction.

| GST on a delivery line | Delivery treatment requiring transaction-date-specific checking; a final clarification is not established in the official material reviewed here | Which notification or guidance was applied on my order date? |
| GST on a ride ticket | Passenger-transport category with conditions that vary by ride type and notification | Which transport category and rate condition apply to this journey? |
| No invoice, only a trip screen | A digital ticket may still serve as the passenger-transport tax invoice | Can you provide the complete ticket with taxable value, rate and tax split? |
What not to assume
- Do not apply one rate to the entire food checkout merely because the total tax divided by the total appears close to a familiar percentage.
- Do not assume a delivery fee is automatically restaurant service or automatically platform service.
- Do not treat every ride as the same passenger-transport category.
- Do not use a current rate table to decide an older transaction without checking amendments and effective dates.
- Do not discard the original ticket after a revised invoice is issued.
Decision checklist
- Save the original invoice or ticket and payment evidence.
- Separate restaurant, delivery, platform and transport lines.
- Record the transaction date, provider identity, taxable values, rates and tax split.
- Ask support for the category, calculation and applicable rule in writing.
- Request both a corrected document and a refund when the line is wrong.
- Escalate through NCH and include the docket number if support does not resolve the case.
