If the inner display is still unresponsive afterward—or the phone is hot, swollen, wet, cracked, or making unusual sounds—treat it as a hardware fault and arrange service.
Apple’s published instructions cover iPhone generally, not a confirmed foldable-iPhone model. Verify the exact device before using any model-specific repair manual or ordering parts.

First, make the phone safe
A nonresponsive inner panel can be a software lockup, but a foldable device also has additional display, hinge and cable components that can be damaged. Do not keep testing a phone that may be unsafe.
- Stop immediately if the phone is unusually hot, swollen, wet, cracked, emitting an unusual smell or sound, or showing signs of battery damage. Move it away from flammable materials and seek professional service.
- Do not press hard on the panel. Pressure can worsen damage to a flexible display or its touch layer.
- Do not repeatedly fold and unfold it to see whether the screen comes back. One careful movement to close the phone for transport is preferable to repeated cycling.

Remove common external causes
- Take off the case. A case that has shifted can press against the hinge or inner panel.
- Remove a screen film or protector if it is lifting, bubbling or misaligned. Do not use a sharp tool, solvent or excessive force. If the protector is factory-applied and removal is unclear, leave it for a technician.
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug charging cables, docks, USB devices and other connected hardware.
- Clear moisture and debris. With the phone powered as far as possible, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not push particles into the hinge or openings, and do not use heat, compressed air or liquid cleaners.
After these checks, test the inner panel once. If it remains dead, move to the force-restart procedure rather than tapping or squeezing the display.
Force-restart the iPhone
Apple’s current force-restart sequence for iPhone is the first software test to try when the device is on but the screen is frozen or touch is unavailable. The buttons must be pressed in order, quickly, except for the final hold:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple notes that this hold can take longer than 10 seconds.
Keep holding the Side button through a blank screen until the logo appears. Do not release it after only a brief vibration or a momentary change in brightness. Once the logo appears, allow the phone time to boot normally before judging the inner screen.

How to interpret the result
- The inner display and touch both return: The incident may have been a temporary software failure or an external obstruction. Remove the case or film that caused pressure, if applicable, and continue to the update and backup steps.
- The outer display works but the inner display does not: The phone is operating, but the inner display assembly or its connection may need diagnosis. Do not assume that another restart will repair a physical fault.
- No screen responds and there is no Apple logo: Confirm that the button sequence was performed correctly and that the phone has adequate charge. If it still cannot be revived, arrange service rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
What persistent failure can mean
If the inner screen stays black or ignores touch after a force restart, possible causes include the display panel, the touch layer, a hinge-flex cable, a connector or the logic board. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis that can be made from symptoms alone. A foldable phone’s construction makes opening it riskier than removing a conventional slab-phone screen.
Do not open the device unless you have the exact model’s repair manual, the appropriate tools and experience with that design. A manual for a different iPhone—or for a non-foldable display—does not establish that the same procedure or parts apply.
If the display comes back: update and back up
Install the available iOS update
Apple says an iOS update may correct an issue. While the phone is usable, connect it to power and a trusted Wi-Fi network, then check Settings > General > Software Update. Read the version and release notes, install the update, and let the phone restart without folding or handling it unnecessarily.

Back up before any repair
Create a current backup before handing the phone to anyone. You can use iCloud or a computer backup, depending on which remains possible with the working screen.
- For iCloud, use Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, start a backup and wait for it to finish. If iCloud syncing is still in progress, allow it to complete where possible.
- For a computer, connect the iPhone to a trusted Mac or Windows computer and create an encrypted local backup when the operating system offers that option.
- Check the backup’s completion date before service. A backup that began but did not finish is not a reliable recovery point.
Apple’s service-preparation guidance warns that a device might be erased during service. Plan to restore from the existing iCloud or computer backup afterward. Never give an unknown repairer your Apple Account password or device passcode. If a technician needs the phone unlocked for testing, provide access only through the provider’s documented intake process and remove access when the job is complete.
Choose a repair route
Compare the provider and the exact model, not just the quoted screen price. A foldable inner display may require a different part, fixture or procedure from a standard iPhone display.

Apple states that Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers use Apple-certified procedures and genuine parts. Apple also states that damage caused by non-authorized repair is not covered by its Limited Warranty or AppleCare, except where consumer law requires otherwise. Ask the provider to explain how its work affects any remaining coverage before you approve it.

- Have you repaired this exact foldable model and its inner display before?
- Will you diagnose the display, touch layer, hinge-flex connection and logic board, or replace the screen without testing?
- Are the replacement parts genuine, compatible, refurbished or from an unknown source?
- What written warranty covers the part and labor, and what events void it?
- Could the phone be erased, and how will my data be protected during testing?
- What is the total quoted cost, including diagnostic, labor, adhesive, hinge-related work and tax?
- What is the expected turnaround, and what happens if the first repair does not resolve the fault?
Prices, turnaround times, warranty eligibility and model compatibility depend on the exact provider and device. A low initial quote is not comparable if it excludes diagnosis or a damaged hinge assembly.
Verify the exact model before using a manual
If the phone can still be controlled through the outer screen, open Settings > General > About and record the model name and model number. If the inner and outer screens are unusable, use the original packaging, purchase record or the provider’s official identification process rather than guessing. Give the technician the model number and any incident details, such as whether the failure began after a drop, moisture exposure, a software update or a fold.
Apple’s iPhone 17 Repair Manual was published on October 2, 2025 and includes display and Multi-Touch troubleshooting for supported models. Its existence does not show that it covers a foldable iPhone. Do not adapt its steps, parts list or diagnostic results unless Apple identifies your exact model as supported.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop home testing and schedule service when any of these conditions applies:
- The force restart does not restore the inner display or touch.
- The display works only when the hinge is held at a particular angle.
- There is visible cracking, separation, liquid exposure, swelling or unusual heat.
- The phone repeatedly freezes or reboots after the display failure.
- You cannot confirm the model or obtain the correct repair documentation.
Record what still works—outer display, sound, calls, charging and notifications—and tell the technician. That information helps distinguish a display-only symptom from a broader power or logic-board problem without requiring you to open the phone.

- Safety check: If the phone is hot, swollen, wet, cracked or making unusual sounds, stop and seek service.
- Remove variables: Take off the case and problematic film, disconnect accessories, and gently remove surface moisture or debris.
- Force restart: Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, even if it takes more than 10 seconds.
- Test once after boot: Check both image and touch without pressing hard or repeatedly folding.
- Protect data: If usable, finish iCloud syncing and make an iCloud or computer backup.
- Escalate: If the inner display remains unresponsive, use Apple-certified service when practical, or choose an independent shop only after verifying foldable experience, parts, privacy terms and a written warranty.
The key distinction is whether a single force restart restores normal operation. If it does not, repeated pressing, folding or improvised opening is more likely to add risk than to solve the underlying fault.
