A different crypto price is often normal, not proof of a bad trade. Exchanges maintain separate order books, and their screens may show a last trade, bid, ask, midpoint, or an estimated conversion quote. Before buying or selling, match the exact pair and timestamp, identify what the number represents, inspect the bid/ask and order-book depth, and check the order type. If you already traded, the completed order record—not a chart or preview—shows the execution you received.
First, determine whether you are comparing the same thing
Most apparent price discrepancies come from comparing unlike data. A headline number on one exchange may be the last trade, while another site shows an executable ask or an all-in conversion quote. A chart can also be delayed or remain unchanged while no trade occurs.

- Match the asset and pair. BTC/USD and BTC/USDT are different markets. Even when both are described casually as “the Bitcoin price,” their quote currencies, liquidity and order books differ.
- Match the timestamp. Refresh both pages and compare contemporaneous data. A current quote is not comparable with an old screenshot, a cached chart or a delayed market-data feed.
- Identify the price definition. Look for labels such as last price, bid, ask, midpoint, indicative price, buy price, sell price or conversion quote.
- Check the order book and size. Compare the available bids and asks at the quantity you intend to trade, not just the first number on the screen.
- Review the order type and final record. A marketable order can consume several price levels. A limit order protects the maximum buy or minimum sell price but can remain unfilled.
If the pair, time, price definition and trade size all match and the difference still looks impossible, do not submit another order until you have checked the existing order status and contacted the exchange through its official support channel.

Each venue has its own order book
An exchange does not read one universal tape and simply reproduce a global price. It matches buyers and sellers in its own order book. Its “last price” is the price of the most recent trade on that venue. The most recent trade elsewhere may have happened at a different level, so the two last prices can diverge.

OKX’s help guidance, published September 4, 2026, states that “The last price only changes when a trade happens.” A thinly traded pair can therefore display a flat last-price line for a long interval while actively traded venues move. Limited depth can also leave one venue above or below another until new orders bring the books closer together.
“Price” can mean several different numbers

Coinbase’s explanation of bid-ask spread describes the gap between the highest bid and lowest ask. A chart’s last price can sit inside that gap, while an immediate buy normally reaches the ask and an immediate sell reaches the bid. Comparing a last trade on one venue with an ask on another can make an ordinary spread look like an error.
Liquidity and order size change the result
The first level of an order book may contain only a small quantity. A larger marketable order consumes that level and then fills at successively worse prices. This difference between the quoted top level and the volume-weighted execution is commonly called slippage. Sparse recent volume and shallow depth make it more likely that two venues will produce different fills for the same order size.

A preview can move before execution
Review screens are estimates until the order is accepted and matched. Prices can change while you read the confirmation, and a partially filled order can receive several prices. Fidelity’s “Orders and activity” help page directs customers to completed order details for the exact price. Treat the preview as a conditional indication, not a settlement record.
How to compare two venues correctly
Use a seven-point comparison

Refresh before drawing a conclusion
Keep both order-book panels open, refresh the displays, and note the times. If one page updates only when a trade occurs, its last-price line may lag even though bids and asks are changing. Do not use a general market index as proof that a particular venue promised that same executable price.
What the order type means for your execution
Market or otherwise marketable orders
A market order asks the venue to execute promptly at the best available prices. The final average can differ from the number you saw moments earlier because the book changes or because your quantity spans multiple levels. Review any maximum slippage, price-protection or quote-expiry setting before submitting.

Limit orders
A limit buy sets the highest price you will accept; a limit sell sets the lowest. Coinbase’s guidance says a limit order executes only at the specified limit price or better when sufficient liquidity is available. That condition protects price but not completion: the order can remain open, partially fill or expire if no matching quantity appears.

Conversion and instant-buy screens
Some services present one buy or sell conversion quote instead of a traditional order book. The displayed amount may include a spread and other disclosed terms. Read the quote’s validity period, asset pair, fees and any price-protection language. Compare it with the relevant executable bid or ask, not with a last-trade chart.
If you have not placed the order
- Open the exchange’s detailed market view rather than relying on a portfolio balance or notification.
- Confirm the exact pair, settlement currency and whether the amount is in units of the asset or the quote currency.
- Read the best bid and ask, then expand the book far enough to cover your quantity.
- Check recent trades and volume. A long gap since the last trade is a warning that the headline last price may be stale.
- Select the order type deliberately. Use a limit condition when price certainty matters more than immediate completion; use a marketable order only when you understand possible slippage.
- On the review screen, verify quantity, estimated total, fees, price condition, expiry and any protection setting.
- Submit once, then wait for a clear status. Repeated clicks can create duplicate or overlapping orders.
If the order has already filled
Find the authoritative record
Open the completed order, fills or transaction-history view. Save the pair, side, quantity, each fill price, average price, fees, order ID and execution timestamp. A balance change or chart marker is not enough to reconstruct the trade. The completed record is the venue’s statement of what matched.

Separate price difference from total-cost difference
Calculate the effective cost using the recorded fills plus the fees and any disclosed conversion charge. A lower headline price elsewhere may still produce a higher total after spread, network charges or a different quote currency. Keep the components separate so a fee is not mistaken for an execution-price error.
Handle partial or pending orders safely
Check whether the order is open, partially filled, canceled or settled. Cancel or amend it only after understanding which portion has already executed. Do not place a replacement order until the original status is unambiguous; otherwise you may unintentionally double your position.

When the difference may indicate a problem
Escalate when the interface shows one price but the final order record contains a materially different price that cannot be explained by the displayed spread, depth, movement between preview and execution, fees or order type. Other warning signs include an order marked filled without corresponding fills, a confirmation that conflicts with the history record, or a quote that changes outside the stated validity period.
Preserve dated screenshots or screen recordings showing the pair, price label, bid and ask, quantity, review screen, confirmation and order history. Note your time zone and the time shown by the exchange. Use only the exchange’s official help center or in-app support route; avoid social-media accounts or unsolicited “support” contacts. Ask for a written explanation tied to the order ID, and do not submit another order while a pending or disputed order remains unresolved.
What EU MiCA rules do—and do not—establish
European Union Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) provisions create duties for covered crypto-asset service providers, but they are not a worldwide guarantee of one uniform price. Whether a rule applies depends on the provider, service, transaction and jurisdiction.
Exchange services under Article 77
MiCA Article 77 addresses exchanging crypto-assets for funds or for other crypto-assets. It requires covered providers to publish a firm price or a method for determining the price, together with applicable limits, and to tell clients the conditions under which an exchange order becomes final. Article 77(3) states: “Crypto-asset service providers shall execute client orders at the prices displayed at the time when the order for exchange is final.” The key question in a complaint is therefore when the order became final under that service’s terms, not which number a separate market website displayed.

Article 76 covers operation of a crypto-asset trading platform. Its provisions include publishing bid and ask prices and the depth available at those prices, as well as publishing executed transaction price, volume and time. Those disclosures help a customer compare an executable market with a last-trade chart.
ESMA’s interpretation
In its Q&A answer ESMA_QA_2181, published May 17, 2024, the European Securities and Markets Authority says the required information should be available in a public location and that quotations should include elements allowing a party to anticipate the exchange price with certainty. That interpretation concerns Article 77; it does not decide an individual complaint or extend MiCA to services outside its scope.
A practical decision tree
- Different pair or timestamp? Correct the comparison and recheck.
- Same pair and time, but last price versus bid/ask? Compare like-for-like values and account for spread.
- Same executable side, but different depth? Compare the full quantity and expected average fill.
- Preview differs from completed fills? Use the order record and explain the change through movement, partial fills, fees or protections.
- Record conflicts with confirmation or stated terms? Preserve evidence and contact official support before trading again.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every difference “manipulation” before checking the pair and quote currency.
- Using a global index or social-media price as the guaranteed price of a particular exchange.
- Comparing a last trade with an immediate buy quote.
- Ignoring order-book depth because the top-of-book price looks attractive.
- Assuming a limit order must fill simply because the market later touched its limit.
- Taking a screenshot without the timestamp, pair, side, quantity or order status.
- Submitting a second order while the first is pending or partially filled.
What a complete dispute file should contain
Keep the original quote or review screen, the confirmation, the completed-order and fill records, timestamps with time zone, pair and side, quantity, fees, order ID, and screenshots of the relevant bid/ask and depth. Explain exactly which displayed term you believe was inconsistent and identify whether the issue concerns price, quantity, fee, timing or missing execution data. This specific record gives support a way to reconcile the event instead of treating it as a general market-price complaint.
