An unfilled crypto order is not automatically broken. First open the exchange’s order list and read the exact status: pending may still be under review, open means it is accepted but waiting for matching conditions, and partially filled means only some of the requested amount traded. If the order is still active and you no longer want it, cancel the remaining quantity through the exchange and verify the final status. A fill that already occurred cannot be undone by cancellation. If the order is missing, cancellation fails, or your balance does not reconcile, contact the exchange through its official support channel with the order ID and evidence.
This guide applies across crypto spot and advanced-trading interfaces, but labels, menu paths, order types and protections vary by exchange, product and jurisdiction. Treat it as troubleshooting information, not a recommendation to buy, sell or chase the market.

Start with the status, not the price chart
Do not place a replacement order until you know what happened to the first one. Open the exchange’s order or transaction screen, select the correct market pair, and record the order ID, side, requested quantity, filled quantity, limit price, order type, time-in-force and timestamps. Coinbase says orders may appear under Transactions or the Advanced Orders tab, while Binance uses views such as Open Orders and Trade History. Your interface can use different labels or expose different features by region and product.

These definitions follow Coinbase’s order-status and cancellation guidance; another venue can use slightly different wording.

Why a limit order can remain unfilled
Your limit is a condition, not a promise
A buy limit generally waits for the market to reach your limit price or lower. A sell limit generally waits for the market to reach your limit price or higher. If you place a buy below the current offers, or a sell above the current bids, the order normally rests on the book until matching interest appears. Binance illustrates these relationships in its explanation of market and limit orders.
Even when the chart shows a trade at your displayed price, that does not prove your order should have executed. The order book may have changed between updates, the trade may have involved a different quantity, or other orders may have been ahead of yours under the venue’s matching rules. Less-traded pairs can have wider gaps between bids and offers and thinner liquidity. Kraken explains that the book, rather than the last-traded price alone, determines what is available for the next match.
Liquidity and queue position matter
An order can touch the quoted price and still receive only a partial fill because there is not enough opposing quantity. If other orders reached that price first, they may be matched before yours. The remaining amount stays open when the order’s settings permit it. A more aggressive limit price can improve the chance of matching against existing liquidity, but it also changes the worst price you are willing to accept; it is not a guarantee.
Market orders still have execution risk
A market order seeks the best available prices in the order book rather than a specific price. Large orders or thin markets can therefore execute across several price levels, producing a different average price from the last trade. Venue protections can also intervene: Kraken notes that its Market Price Protection may cancel some market orders. Do not assume that every market order on every crypto product will fill completely or instantaneously.

Inspect the order’s conditions before deciding
- Confirm the market and side. Make sure you are viewing the intended pair and whether the order is a buy or sell; similar symbols can be easy to confuse.
- Compare the limit with the live book. Look at current bids and asks, not only the chart’s last-price marker. Note whether enough opposing quantity is visible near your limit.
- Check filled versus remaining quantity. A partially filled order has already changed your holdings and may have generated fees. Only the remainder can be canceled.
- Read time-in-force and expiration. Determine whether the order can remain overnight, expires at a stated time, or was intended to execute immediately.
- Review special instructions. Advanced interfaces may show reduce-only, post-only, trigger, protection or strategy settings that alter when an order can match.

Time-in-force settings explain many “stuck” orders

Coinbase documents GTC, IOC, FOK and TWAP as examples. Other exchanges may omit an option, rename it or apply different expiration rules, so use the setting shown on your order confirmation.
Choose between waiting and canceling
There are two legitimate actions for an order that is still open. The right choice depends on whether preserving your stated price is more important than changing the chance and terms of execution.

Before changing anything, consider whether any quantity has filled, when the order expires, the fees displayed for the exact product, and whether the new order’s price and size still fit your plan. Changing a limit or switching to a market order does not guarantee a fill at a preferred price.

How to cancel an active order safely
- Open the active-order view. Use the exchange’s current web or app interface, such as Open Orders, Transactions or Advanced Orders.
- Open the order details. Match the order ID, pair, side and remaining quantity. Do not rely on a symbol alone if you have several orders.
- Check for a partial fill. Record the executed amount; cancellation affects only what is still unfilled.
- Select the platform’s cancel control. Coinbase describes selecting the open order, choosing Cancel Order and confirming. Binance shows a cancel control beside an order in its web or app interface.
- Wait for confirmation. Refresh the order list or open the order history and verify that the status is canceled or otherwise final.
- Only then consider a replacement. Confirm that no remainder is still active before submitting another order for the same intended amount.
Coinbase states that only pending or open orders can be canceled and that a completed execution cannot be modified. If your exchange’s controls do not match these examples, follow its current help-center instructions rather than guessing.

No record appears anywhere
Check both open orders and completed or canceled history, switch to the correct account or portfolio, and verify the market and approximate submission time. A pending submission may not appear in the same list as an active order. Do not submit another order until the venue confirms whether the first request exists.
The cancel button errors or the status will not update
Capture the exact error, keep the order ID, and check whether a fill occurred while the cancellation request was processing. Refreshing can update a stale display, but repeated clicks can create confusion; rely on the exchange’s final status record.

Compare available and held balances with the final order status and trade history. Platforms do not publish one universal balance-release timeline, so an account-specific discrepancy requires support rather than a guessed waiting period.

Contacting support
Use only the official app or website support route. Include:
- order ID and market pair;
- buy or sell side, order type and time-in-force;
- requested, filled and remaining quantities;
- submission and cancellation timestamps with time zone;
- screenshots or an exported order-history record; and
- the exact error message or balance discrepancy.
Never provide a password, recovery phrase or one-time authentication code to anyone claiming to be support. The official Coinbase and Binance guidance recommends checking order history and using the platform’s support process for unresolved order records.
Common situations and the safest response
“The market touched my limit, but I got no fill.”
Verify the actual bid or ask that traded, the quantity available at that level and your order’s place in the queue. A chart may show only the last trade, not every level or the order-book depth. If the order is still open, decide whether its original condition remains acceptable; do not assume an exchange error from the chart alone.

“Only part of my order executed.”
Read the filled and remaining amounts and check fees. You can leave the remainder active under its existing settings or cancel that remainder, but any completed portion stays executed. A replacement order should account for the quantity already acquired or sold.
“I used IOC or FOK and expected it to wait.”
Those settings are designed for immediate matching, not indefinite resting. Look in history for a canceled, rejected or partially executed result and confirm the venue’s exact implementation.
“I changed the price and now see two orders.”
Treat the original as live until its status is definitively canceled or filled. Check both order IDs and remaining quantities before taking further action; otherwise you could trade more than intended.
Keep records and verify the final state
Save the order ID, confirmation screen and final history entry for any order that behaves unexpectedly. Record timestamps in a consistent time zone and note whether the order was spot, margin or another product, since rules can differ. When the status, fills and balances agree, no further technical action is required. If they do not, provide that complete record to official support instead of relying on a social-media account or an unsolicited “recovery” service.
