A frozen Bitcoin withdrawal is a status to diagnose, not proof that your coins are gone. Save the exact error and withdrawal details, check for a published outage or security cooldown, and contact the exchange only through its authenticated website or app. The correct next step depends on whether the hold comes from account security, payment settlement, trading activity, compliance, a legal order, a technical incident, or a liquidity problem.
Take these steps in the first hour
Act methodically before retrying the withdrawal or responding to anyone who promises an instant unlock. Create a contemporaneous record that can be used by support, a regulator, or a lawyer later.

- Capture the evidence. Screenshot the error message, withdrawal ID, amount, Bitcoin destination address, selected network, timestamp, account notices, and support-ticket number. Save the screenshots in their original form and write down your local time zone.
- Check official status information. Open the exchange’s status page and help center from a bookmark or by typing the known domain yourself. Look for a Bitcoin-wallet outage, maintenance notice, payment hold, chain congestion notice, or security incident.
- Review recent account changes. Check whether you recently changed your password, email address, phone number, or two-factor authentication method. Fixed security cooldowns are common. BitMEX documents a 24-hour delay after a password reset and a 72-hour delay after an email change. Bitvavo documents a 24-hour withdrawal block after an email, password, two-factor, or phone-number change. Those controls are automatic and support cannot manually expedite them.
- Check balances and activity. Look for pending deposits, open or pending orders, open margin positions, negative balances, or an asset mismatch. Kraken lists each of these as a reason a withdrawal can be blocked. A time-based hold generally cannot be bypassed by asking support to override it.
- Open one authenticated support case. Use the logged-in support form, in-app chat, or other route shown inside the exchange account. Include the withdrawal ID and a concise timeline. Never send a seed phrase, private key, one-time authentication code, or remote-access session to a purported support employee.
Identify what kind of hold you have
The wording of the status, the timing, and the account conditions usually distinguish a routine control from a serious incident. Ask support to identify the category in writing rather than accepting a generic “pending” label.
| Hold category | Typical clues | What you can do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security cooldown | A password, email, phone, or two-factor change happened shortly before the withdrawal was disabled. | Secure the account, confirm that the changes were authorized, and wait through the published period. | The timer normally expires automatically; staff often cannot shorten it. |
| Funding or settlement hold | A recent bank transfer, card purchase, or other payment method funded the account, while the balance may still be tradable. | Review the payment method’s settlement terms and ask for the exact release condition. | The hold lasts until the payment is considered settled under that method and region. |
| Trading or balance condition | Open orders, margin positions, pending deposits, a negative balance, or the wrong asset or network is involved. | Cancel or settle orders, close or collateralize positions, resolve the deficit, and correct the asset selection. | Withdrawal access returns only after the underlying obligation is cleared. |
| Compliance or risk review | The exchange requests identity, source-of-funds, transaction-purpose, or destination-wallet information. | Submit accurate documents through the official portal and request the review status and next-update date. | Disclosure may be limited while the review is open; do not submit altered or speculative documents. |
| Legal or sanctions restriction | The notice refers to a court, law-enforcement agency, sanctions program, or a jurisdictional restriction. | Ask which legal entity issued the notice and what formal correspondence or appeal route exists. | There may be no technical workaround, and the exchange may be unable to disclose details where law forbids it. |
| Operational or liquidity event | Bitcoin withdrawals are broadly suspended, status updates are vague, or customer service is unreachable. | Preserve records, monitor official notices, and begin the escalation ladder instead of repeatedly retrying. | Resolution is uncertain; a prolonged, opaque suspension can signal material financial or operational stress. |
Security cooldowns
A cooldown is designed to stop an attacker who has just taken over an account. Do not keep changing credentials while the timer runs, because additional changes can create another delay. Verify that your email account, phone number, authenticator, and recovery codes are secure. If you did not make the change, tell the exchange immediately through its authenticated channel and ask it to lock further activity.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Payment and settlement holds
Payment rails can be reversible or subject to bank settlement, even when the exchange displays the resulting balance. Kraken documents examples involving ACH or Plaid transfers and certain card transactions. The exact period depends on the payment method, the country, and the exchange’s terms. Ask whether only Bitcoin withdrawals are restricted or whether all external transfers are affected; do not assume that a tradable balance is a withdrawable balance.
Open orders, margin, and balance problems
An exchange may reserve Bitcoin or fiat for an open order, require collateral for a margin position, or block transfers while a deposit is pending. A negative balance can also create a set-off claim against assets in the account. Review every account section, not just the Bitcoin wallet: spot orders, derivatives, lending, staking, and fiat funding can each create a reservation. Resolve the specific condition shown in the account before sending another withdrawal request.
Compliance and risk reviews
A legitimate review can ask how funds were acquired, why a transaction is being sent, or who controls the destination wallet. Provide a clear, truthful explanation and unedited documents through the exchange’s secure upload page. Ask four precise questions: what category is the review, what information is still missing, when will the next status update be issued, and what complaint reference number identifies the case? Keep copies of everything submitted. Do not send identity documents to a person who contacted you first through social media, messaging apps, or an unsolicited phone call.

Sanctions, court orders, and other legal restrictions
Coinbase states that it may freeze funds when compelled by a court or other authority or when required to comply with sanctions programs, contacting customers where the law permits. In such a case, a different wallet, a new browser, or repeated withdrawal attempts will not solve the problem. Request the relevant legal basis, the affected assets, and any available review or appeal procedure. Whether the freeze is lawful depends on the exchange’s contract, the legal entity involved, the country where you live, and the authority issuing the order; there is no universal answer for every customer.
Technical incidents and liquidity concerns
A wallet software fault, blockchain integration problem, maintenance event, or network upgrade can pause withdrawals without affecting the exchange’s solvency. Compare the exchange’s status notice with independent Bitcoin network information, but rely on the exchange for the status of its own wallet. A different risk arises when the firm gives no meaningful explanation, repeatedly extends the suspension, or cannot provide reachable support. A Michigan consumer alert warns that withdrawal suspensions can accompany liquidity shortages and recommends checking whether the firm discloses reserves, maintains reachable customer service, and has a history of interruptions. Those signs do not prove insolvency, but they justify preserving evidence and escalating promptly.

- the precise hold category;
- the action or document still required from you;
- the date or condition that releases the hold;
- the next scheduled status update; and
- the formal complaint or case reference number.
Reply in that same thread rather than opening many duplicate tickets. Multiple cases can split the history and produce contradictory replies. If support gives a phone number, verify it against the logged-in help center; do not trust a number supplied in an unsolicited email or direct message.
Escalate when the exchange does not provide a meaningful answer
- Use the formal complaint process. If ordinary support will not identify the hold or provide a next-update date, submit the exchange’s documented complaint form. Attach the timeline and ticket history, and retain the submission confirmation.
- Identify the correct legal entity. Exchanges may operate different companies, licenses, and complaint routes in different countries. Use the entity named in your account agreement, privacy notice, or regulatory disclosure—not a similarly named group company.
- Contact the relevant authority. Report the matter to the financial regulator or consumer-protection authority responsible for that entity and your residence. A regulator may explain jurisdiction or investigate conduct, but it cannot promise an immediate release of Bitcoin.
- Get legal advice if the stakes are high. If insolvency, theft, a court order, or a large amount is involved, consult a qualified lawyer quickly. Preserve account exports, blockchain transaction records, contracts, emails, and screenshots. Avoid public posts that expose your identity, address, balance, or recovery details.
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority says firms should provide “timely and effective support across all channels, especially during incidents such as wallet freezes, staking failures, or protocol upgrades.” Its guidance also describes an “opaque and extended withdrawal” hold during market stress, without updates or escalation routes, as poor practice (FCA, GC26/2). These statements are standards for assessing service quality, not a guarantee that every customer can compel an immediate transfer.
How to spot an unlock scam
Freezes attract impersonators because a worried customer is more likely to pay quickly. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission advises ending the conversation and independently contacting the bank, brokerage, government agency, or company through a verified telephone number or official website. Apply that rule to every “recovery” offer.

- Urgent unlock fees: A demand to send Bitcoin, gift cards, or a “tax” before funds can be released is a major warning sign.
- Unsolicited recovery agents: Anyone who finds you through social media, a messaging app, or a comment and claims inside access is not an authenticated support channel.
- Remote-access requests: Do not install software or share your screen so a stranger can “fix” the wallet.
- Secrets and secrecy: No legitimate representative needs your seed phrase, private key, one-time code, or password. A request to keep the conversation secret is another red flag.
Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible once broadcast. If you already sent money to a scammer, contact your bank or payment provider immediately, secure the affected accounts, preserve wallet addresses and messages, and report the incident to the appropriate authority. Do not pay a second party that promises to reverse the first loss.

- Match the network and address. Select Bitcoin on both sides. Compare the first and last characters of the address on the exchange and the wallet, then verify every character using a trusted display. Do not substitute a tokenized or wrapped-asset network.
- Send a small test amount. Confirm that the test transaction appears in the wallet and reaches the expected number of confirmations before moving a larger balance. Account for the exchange’s stated withdrawal fee and minimum.
- Save the records. Keep the transaction ID, withdrawal confirmation, amount, fee, timestamp, and screenshots with your account records. These documents help with taxes, disputes, and future support requests.
For long-term holdings, a Bitcoin hardware wallet is one self-custody product category to evaluate. The relevant benefit is control of private keys rather than any particular brand, model, price, or performance claim. Weigh that control against the risk of losing a backup, entering a malicious address, or signing a transaction you did not understand.

Prevent the next withdrawal freeze
- Make credential, email, phone, and two-factor changes well before you need to withdraw, allowing for the exchange’s published cooldown.
- Keep deposits settled and avoid leaving open orders or margin positions that consume the balance you plan to transfer.
- Maintain a current record of acquisition history and source-of-funds documents so a compliance request can be answered accurately.
- Confirm the exchange’s legal entity, complaint route, status page, and published custody disclosures before concentrating a large balance there.
- Test a small withdrawal to your own wallet periodically instead of discovering a restriction when you need emergency access.
- Use a unique password, protected email account, hardware-based or app-based two-factor authentication, and withdrawal-address protections where available.
Can an exchange legally freeze Bitcoin?
Sometimes it can, but legality is fact-specific. A contract may permit security or settlement holds; anti-money-laundering and sanctions rules may require a review; and a court or law-enforcement order can restrict access. The governing law, the exchange’s legal entity, your residence, the reason stated for the freeze, and the duration all matter. A routine, disclosed cooldown is different from an indefinite, unexplained suspension. If the exchange will not identify the basis or provide a complaint route, document that failure and seek advice in the relevant jurisdiction rather than relying on a generalized online answer.
How long can the exchange hold the withdrawal?
There is no single industry-wide deadline. Published security examples include 24 hours after certain password or account changes and 72 hours after an email change, while payment settlement, compliance reviews, legal restrictions, and technical incidents follow different clocks. Ask for the specific release condition and next-update date. If the answer is only “wait” with no category, timeline, or escalation path, treat the lack of transparency itself as a service problem and proceed through the formal complaint and regulatory steps.
