First, identify exactly what is blocked: signing in, trading, sending crypto, or withdrawing cash. Read the notice in the exchange’s official app or website, then use only its official verification, support, or appeal process. A restriction is not always a freeze of the assets themselves, and the right next step depends on the reason and the exchange’s legal entity.
Find out what is actually restricted
Save the exact error message and check the exchange’s in-app notifications and official email. Work out whether you cannot access the account, buy or sell, send cryptocurrency, withdraw fiat, or do any of these. Check the status of any pending transaction before trying again; repeated attempts may not help and can make it harder to track what happened.

Exchanges distinguish between different kinds of restrictions. Coinbase, for example, describes buy-and-sell restrictions, account closures, and rarer situations where funds themselves are blocked. Secure your account before contacting support
If you see activity you did not authorize, use a trusted device and go directly to the exchange’s official app or website. Secure the email account linked to the exchange, review its two-step verification, and reset the exchange password as directed. Check recent account activity and note anything you do not recognize. Coinbase’s temporary-disable guidance recommends securing email and two-factor authentication, resetting the exchange password, and then contacting its team: Coinbase: My account was compromised.

Do not give anyone who contacts you your password, one-time or two-step verification codes, recovery codes, seed phrase, or remote access to your device. Coinbase says legitimate support agents will not ask for passwords or two-step codes, ask you to trade or deposit, or request remote access: Coinbase: Is Coinbase freezing my account? Treat unsolicited “recovery” messages as suspicious, even if they refer to a restriction or identity check.
Use the exchange’s verification or appeal route
Complete only the identity or security steps shown in an official notice. If the withdrawal screen provides an appeal option, submit the requested materials there. Otherwise, contact support through the exchange’s official help center—not a phone number, social-media account, or link sent by an unknown person. Make the support request easy to investigate. Include a short chronology and the details relevant to the restriction:
- When you last signed in successfully and when the problem began.
- The function that is blocked and the exact error or notice.
- Relevant transaction IDs, amounts, and dates.
- Any account activity you did not authorize.
- The case number from any earlier contact, if you have one.
Coinbase asks users reporting a security issue to give the timing of their last authorized activity and details of unauthorized transactions. Understand the stated timing—without treating it as a promise
Review estimates apply to the specific platform and type of case, not to crypto exchanges generally. Coinbase says restriction resolution and response review typically take up to 10 business days, while some cases take longer. Its security guidance also says it strives to investigate security reports within 10 business days and that sensitive cases may need additional time: Coinbase: My account was compromised and Coinbase security guidance.
Some restrictions are cooldowns rather than case reviews. Binance says certain security changes, such as a password change, may suspend withdrawals for 24 to 48 hours, and that those cooldowns cannot be lifted early: Binance account restrictions FAQ. Check whether the restriction is tied to a legal order
A platform may be required to restrict activity under a court or competent-authority order, or under sanctions law. Coinbase says it contacts affected customers where legally permitted: Coinbase: Is Coinbase freezing my account?. Binance says some restrictions connected with law-enforcement orders or regulatory obligations are not open to appeal: Binance account restrictions FAQ. Binance’s P2P policy says a user whose account is frozen at a judicial authority’s request should contact that authority during the freeze: Binance P2P policy.

If money was stolen, report it and avoid recovery scams
If someone accessed your account without permission or funds were stolen, preserve transaction details and report promptly through the appropriate fraud or law-enforcement channel in your country. Coinbase directs U.S. victims of theft or crime to IC3 and relevant authorities; IC3 is a U.S.-specific reporting channel, not a global regulator: Coinbase: My account was compromised.
Reject offers to unlock funds in exchange for an upfront fee, deposit, trade, password, code, seed phrase, or remote access. Binance warns that impostors may pose as support and use KYC or account restrictions as a pretext: Binance anti-scam guidance. Coinbase also warns that crypto sent off-platform is irreversible and cannot be retrieved by Coinbase: Coinbase: Is Coinbase freezing my account?
