If you suspect a Cisco Nexus switch running NX-OS has been tampered with, treat the situation as a security incident, not as a routine configuration problem. Start an incident record, capture the exact model, serial or asset identity, NX-OS release and operating mode, symptoms and timeline, then preserve evidence before rebooting, erasing, or making broad changes. Use Cisco’s current security advisories and first-responder forensic guidance for the exact platform and release; involve the network incident lead and Cisco support when the cause is uncertain.
There is no universal command sequence that proves a Nexus switch was compromised. The correct response depends on the model, NX-OS version, operating mode, topology, affected services, and whether an attacker may still have access. The sequence below is a safe triage framework. It does not replace Cisco’s platform-specific forensic procedure or advice from qualified incident responders.

1. Open an incident and define what is known
Nominate an incident lead and a technical owner before changing the switch. Record facts in a shared, access-controlled case record so that different responders do not overwrite the timeline or perform conflicting actions.

- Exact Nexus model, chassis or supervisor details, serial number, site, and asset identifier.
- NX-OS version, image information, operating mode, and any virtualized features in use.
- Management addresses, out-of-band access details, and the adjacent devices or services that depend on the switch.
Build a timeline
Write down the first time an abnormal condition was noticed, the last known-good time, and every relevant event between them. Include unexpected administrative activity, configuration or automation changes, alerts, outages, reboots, authentication failures, and changes to links or routing. Identify who has accessed the device physically or remotely, including service accounts and automation systems. Preserve the original time zone and clock source for every timestamp; an apparently small time discrepancy can make events appear out of order.

Describe impact without guessing the cause
Separate observed effects from hypotheses. State which links, VLANs, tenants, applications, or management systems are affected and whether the problem is continuing. A suspicious configuration is evidence to preserve, not proof that a particular vulnerability was exploited. Avoid labelling the event as malware, an insider action, or a Cisco software flaw until the evidence supports that conclusion.
2. Preserve evidence before attempting cleanup
Do not begin with a factory reset, image replacement, broad configuration rollback, or unnecessary reboot. Those actions can remove volatile state and overwrite the very artifacts needed to determine what happened. Coordinate collection with the incident lead and follow the Cisco first-responder procedure for the exact Nexus platform and NX-OS release.
Move logs off the switch
Collect available local logs and send or copy them to a remote, access-controlled logging system. Cisco’s Cisco Nexus OS Software Security Primer states: “From a security perspective, we strongly recommend that you save logs remotely, as they are a critical source of evidence in detecting and investigating security incidents.” Remote copies help when local logs, settings, or storage are later modified or deleted.

Check integrity and persistent artifacts
Cisco describes its Nexus first-responder material as covering software-integrity and digital-signing characteristics, critical-process core files, non-volatile artifacts, and other persistent state. The guide also addresses NX-OS virtual technologies, including Guest Shell, Docker settings, and deployed containers. These areas can matter when a switch appears normal at the CLI but a process, package, or virtualized component has been altered.
Protect the chain of custody
- Use a known-controlled workstation and an approved evidence destination.
- Record collection time, operator, device identity, command or procedure used, and any errors.
- Hash or otherwise integrity-protect exported files according to your organization’s incident process.
- Keep a separate note of actions that changed the device, including logins, configuration saves, process restarts, and link changes.
The Cisco-authored summary of the forensic guide is an overview, not a substitute for the full current procedure. Use the guide that matches the hardware and software, and obtain expert help if a collection step could alter volatile state.
3. Check whether a Cisco advisory matches
After the initial evidence is secured, search Cisco Security Advisories using the exact product family, model, NX-OS release, and operating mode you recorded. Compare the advisory’s affected versions, prerequisites, symptoms, exploitation conditions, and mitigation steps with your deployment.

If an advisory fits
Follow that advisory’s instructions and Cisco’s recommended-release guidance. Confirm that a proposed fixed release supports the exact model, hardware modules, features, and management tools in use. Plan the change with the incident lead, because upgrading or applying a mitigation can alter evidence and availability.

If no advisory fits
Do not infer that the switch is safe, and do not assume that an unknown vulnerability caused the event. Continue forensic triage, review authentication and management paths, and escalate the unexplained condition to Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC). An absence of a matching advisory means only that the available public advisory information does not explain the observed facts.
4. Contain the incident without losing control of the network
Containment is a risk decision, not a memorized Nexus command. The incident lead, network operators, and service owners should decide how to limit suspected access or lateral movement while retaining essential management and emergency connectivity where possible.
Balance isolation and availability
Map dependencies before shutting interfaces, changing VLAN membership, altering routing, or restricting the management plane. Identify redundancy, out-of-band paths, critical applications, and any devices that would become unreachable. Define a rollback plan and an authorized operator for every change. If the suspected access path is a management account, preserve a trusted administrative path before disabling or rotating credentials.
When broader isolation may be justified
CISA’s general incident-response guidance says switch-level network isolation may be appropriate when several systems or subnets appear impacted. That guidance is not a Nexus-specific command recipe. Apply it only after assessing topology, redundancy, safety systems, business impact, and the possibility that isolation could strand the investigation team or disrupt dependent services.

Document every containment action
For each change, record the exact time, operator, authorization, expected effect, observed effect, and rollback condition. Avoid simultaneous, undocumented changes by multiple teams; they make it difficult to tell whether a symptom came from the compromise or from containment.
5. Choose the right Cisco escalation path
Different Cisco teams handle different needs. Route the case according to the question you need answered, rather than opening several uncoordinated requests.
| Situation | Primary path | What to provide or request |
|---|---|---|
| The technical cause, behavior, or recovery path is unclear | Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) | Open a service request with the model, serial or asset identity, NX-OS release and mode, timeline, symptoms, topology impact, relevant outputs, and the evidence-collection steps already performed. |
| An active cyber incident requires specialist investigation or response | Cisco Talos Incident Response | Engage through the organization’s incident lead and describe the current activity, scope, containment status, and evidence available. Treat this as incident-response support, not routine product troubleshooting. |
| You suspect a known vulnerability or a new zero-day issue | Cisco PSIRT | Report the suspected vulnerability or compromise relationship, including the exact platform and release, reproducible details where safe, and the advisory you believe may apply. |
Cisco’s escalation guidance recommends checking its security advisories, gathering version and platform details, using the forensic guides, collecting pertinent device outputs, and opening a TAC request when the cause remains unclear. Keep the evidence package available for the responder; do not send altered or selectively edited logs.
6. Decide whether recovery or rebuild is necessary
Recovery should follow evidence collection, a documented containment plan, and an agreed rebuild design. Decide whether the device’s integrity can be validated and repaired or whether replacing the software, credentials, configuration, or hardware is safer. Include management access, trusted images, licensing, upstream and downstream dependencies, and a validation window in the plan.

Secure Erase on applicable Nexus 9000 systems
Cisco documents Secure Erase as a factory-reset recovery option for a Nexus 9000 when stored key material or credentials are compromised. The cited guide says the capability was introduced beginning with NX-OS 10.2(2)F. Confirm that the exact Nexus 9000 model, release, and operating mode support it before scheduling the action.
Secure Erase is destructive: Cisco says it clears configuration, logs, and storage information. It can therefore eliminate evidence that has not been collected. The guide also states that it does not erase external storage. Treat that external media as a separate evidence and sanitization decision, and do not assume a Secure Erase has removed every copy of a secret.
Prepare the rebuild
- Preserve and approve the evidence package before the reset.
- Obtain a known-good, supported NX-OS image and verify its integrity using Cisco’s documented method.
- Rotate credentials, keys, certificates, and automation secrets that may have been exposed; coordinate dependent systems before revocation.
- Recreate only the required configuration from reviewed, trusted sources rather than restoring an unexamined backup wholesale.
- Plan console or out-of-band access in case normal management connectivity is unavailable during recovery.
7. Validate the device and surrounding network after remediation
Before returning the switch to normal service, compare the rebuilt or remediated state with the approved design. Confirm that software, boot settings, management accounts, authentication sources, logging destinations, time synchronization, access controls, interfaces, VLANs, routing, and required virtualized components are expected. Verify that logs reach the remote collector and that alerts are functioning.
Test both normal traffic and failure scenarios through the redundant paths that the topology depends on. Have service owners confirm application health, and monitor for renewed authentication anomalies, unexplained configuration changes, process failures, or traffic patterns. Keep heightened monitoring for the period defined by the incident lead, and preserve all validation results with the case record.
Quick Recap
8. Common mistakes that make a Nexus investigation harder
- Resetting first: A factory reset or image replacement can destroy logs, configuration history, and volatile clues.
- Using a generic command list: Commands and safe collection methods vary by model, NX-OS release, and operating mode; use Cisco’s matching forensic guide.
- Assuming an advisory is proof: A version match does not establish exploitation, while a non-match does not prove the device is uncompromised.
- Isolating without a dependency map: Broad port, VLAN, routing, or management changes can interrupt critical services and lock out responders.
- Editing evidence: Filtering, reformatting, or combining logs without retaining originals weakens analysis and handoff.
- Rotating only one password: If credentials or keys may be exposed, review local, centralized, automation, certificate, and external-management secrets together.
- Letting multiple teams act independently: Assign one incident lead and require an authorization and timestamp for each device change.
9. A practical decision checklist
- Open an incident record and appoint an incident lead.
- Capture the model, serial or asset identity, NX-OS release and mode, symptoms, scope, and timeline.
- Preserve local and remote logs, configuration, runtime state, integrity information, persistent artifacts, and relevant virtualized-component data using the applicable Cisco forensic guide.
- Check Cisco Security Advisories against the exact platform and release.
- Choose containment with the network and service owners, retaining a trusted management path and documenting every change.
- Contact TAC for an unclear technical cause, Talos Incident Response for an active cyber incident, or PSIRT for suspected vulnerability-related compromise.
- Only after evidence and a recovery plan are approved, remediate or rebuild; treat Secure Erase as destructive and verify applicability before using it.
- Validate the restored state, remote logging, credentials, services, and monitoring before declaring the incident closed.
