What to do if a child has shared personal information with someone online

Stay calm, thank your child for telling you, and find out exactly what was shared before changing or deleting anything. Check for immediate danger first; then limit further access, preserve useful evidence, and use the reporting route that fits the risk and your country.

Start with safety, not punishment

Your first conversation can determine whether your child keeps asking for help. Use a steady, non-accusatory tone: “I’m glad you told me. You’re not in trouble for asking for help. Let’s work out what happened and what will help you feel safe.” This wording is a practical paraphrase of advice from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and UK safeguarding guidance.

Thank the child for coming to you. Do not threaten to confiscate the phone, close every account, or punish them before you understand the situation. A child who expects blame may delete messages, continue talking to the person in secret, or avoid telling you if the contact becomes threatening.

Ask open questions and let the child answer in their own words:

  • What happened, and which app, game, website, or chat was involved?

  • What is the other account called, and how did the person contact you?
  • Has the person asked for more information, money, images, secrecy, or a meeting?
  • Have they threatened you, your family, or themselves?

Do not assume the account owner is the age, gender, or identity they claim. Also do not assume your child understood the possible consequences. The person using pressure, deception, or threats is responsible for that conduct; your child’s mistake does not make the conduct acceptable.

“Don’t panic. Understand that children will make mistakes; it’s important not to judge your children or yourself too harshly.” — Federal Bureau of Investigation, Stay Safe Online: Keeping Kids Safe

Check for immediate danger before changing anything

First decide whether this is an urgent physical-safety problem, a serious online-abuse problem, or a routine privacy exposure. Stay with your child while you make that assessment.

What you learn Priority What to do now
The person knows the child’s current location, home, school, routine, or travel plans and is threatening the child or trying to arrange a meeting. Immediate safety risk Keep the child with a trusted adult and contact local emergency services or police. The UK CEOP guidance gives 999 for immediate danger; Australian Government guidance gives 000. Neither number is universal.
The person is grooming, sexually coercing, blackmailing, or threatening to publish images, but there is no known immediate physical danger. Urgent safeguarding and reporting Do not negotiate or send more material. Preserve account details and messages where safe, then contact the appropriate child-protection or law-enforcement service and the platform.
A name, school, team, birth date, photo, or other ordinary detail was shared without threats or sexual content. Privacy and account security Remove or edit the exposure, review visibility and location settings, block or report the account if unwanted, and watch for follow-up contact.

If you believe someone may reach your child in person, do not wait for a platform response. Call the emergency service for your location. Tell the operator what was shared, whether the person knows where the child is, and whether a meeting has been proposed.

Limit what the person can see or do

Once immediate danger has been addressed, work through the affected account with your child. The exact labels differ by service, but the controls usually cover the same areas.

  1. Remove or edit the disclosure. Delete a post, story, profile field, comment, or location tag when the service allows it. If another user posted the information, use the service’s report or removal process rather than trying to access that person’s account.
  2. Review profile visibility. Set the account to the most private practical option. Check who can view posts, follow the account, comment, send direct messages, add the child to groups, or search for the profile by phone number or email.
  3. Turn off unnecessary location exposure. Review live location, map features, geotags, check-ins, and location permissions. Remove location details from new posts and photos where possible.
  4. Check tags, mentions, and linked accounts. Limit who can tag or mention the child and review older tagged material. Look for public links to school, sports, family, or other accounts that reveal routine or whereabouts.
  5. Block and report unwanted contact. Blocking can stop direct messages or viewing from that account; reporting sends the service information for review. Use both when the contact is abusive, deceptive, or persistent.
  6. Protect credentials if they may have been exposed. If the child shared a password, one-time code, recovery email, or login link, change the password from the official account settings, sign out other sessions, and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Preserve relevant messages first when doing so is safe and will not prolong contact.

These measures reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that a recipient did not copy, download, or screenshot the information. Explain that limitation without frightening the child or suggesting that nothing can be done.

Preserve evidence without spreading it

Useful records help a platform, police service, or child-protection agency understand what happened. Save the account handle, display name, platform, profile URL if available, dates and times, and the surrounding message context. Screenshots can document threats or requests, but keep them private and store them securely.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do not reply to provoke the person, publicly identify them, or repost their messages. Public arguments can alert the account owner, expose your child further, or destroy context that investigators need. If the account disappears, your saved handle, timestamps, and screenshots may still help.

Sexual images require special care. Do not forward, download for convenience, or circulate a child’s nude or sexual image. If an intimate image is involved, ask the relevant child-protection authority or law-enforcement service and the platform how to preserve evidence safely. UK education safeguarding guidance says school staff should generally not view such images except in limited safeguarding circumstances; that specific rule concerns education settings and is not a universal legal instruction for parents.

Choose the reporting route by risk and country

No single agency handles every online incident. Report to the service that matches both the conduct and your location, and verify the current instructions because reporting forms and platform controls change.

Situation Route identified by official guidance Important limit
Suspected grooming or online sexual abuse in the United Kingdom Report to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) command. CEOP says it handles online grooming and sexual abuse, including threats involving a child’s nude picture. It does not handle ordinary bullying, fake-account complaints, or account hacking. Call 999 if danger is immediate.
Suspected grooming or child sexual exploitation in Australia Report through the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE). Call 000 for immediate danger. Australian eSafety services may help with certain harmful-content complaints and removal requests.
Internet crime or predator incidents in the United States FBI guidance points people to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or a local FBI field office. Predator incidents can also be reported to the FBI, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), or local law enforcement. Confirm that the selected service fits the incident and the child’s location; a US route is not a substitute for local authorities elsewhere.
Other countries Use local police, a national child-protection agency, and the platform’s own safety-reporting channel. Names, legal powers, emergency numbers, and image-removal eligibility vary by country.

When the contact looks like grooming

Grooming can include building trust, offering gifts or special attention, moving a child to a private chat, asking for secrecy, testing boundaries, or gradually requesting sexual conversation or images. A child may describe the person as a friend or may defend them. Focus on the behavior and the child’s safety rather than arguing about whether the relationship is “real.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the progression of contact, not just the latest message. Tell the reporting service if the person used several accounts, claimed to be a peer, knows the child’s school or routine, or tried to arrange an in-person meeting. Do not arrange your own confrontation or meeting with the account owner.

When threats, blackmail, or intimate images are involved

Treat threats to publish an intimate image, demands for money, and demands for more images as an urgent specialist situation. Keep the child with a supportive adult, stop negotiating, and do not send additional material. Australian Government guidance states in the under-18 blackmail context: “Do not pay and do not send more images or videos.” Payment does not guarantee deletion and may lead to further demands.

Do not forward the image to relatives, friends, school staff, or investigators through ordinary messaging. Tell the receiving agency that an image exists and ask for its preferred evidence-handling process. Report the threatening account through the platform as well as to the relevant authority.

For UK cases, government guidance names Childline and the Internet Watch Foundation’s Report Remove service. It also names NCMEC’s Take It Down service for helping limit the spread of qualifying images. Eligibility, age requirements, participating services, and the possibility of removal depend on the tool and the circumstances; none should be presented as a guaranteed takedown. In Australia, under-18 sextortion guidance directs victims to report to ACCCE, avoid payment, and avoid sending more images.

Support your child after the report

Reporting can feel frightening even when the child is not in trouble. Explain what you are doing, what information you will share, and who may contact them. Keep routines as normal as practical, and agree on one or two trusted adults the child can approach if new messages arrive.

Watch for sleep problems, withdrawal, panic, sudden secrecy, missed school, or fear of particular places or devices. These signs do not prove what happened, but they warrant a calm check-in and, if needed, help from a qualified health or safeguarding professional. Do not make the child repeatedly retell graphic details to different people; keep a written timeline that you can share with professionals.

What not to do

  • Do not blame, shame, or threaten the child for trusting someone or making a mistake.
  • Do not demand that the child continue chatting so you can gather more evidence.
  • Do not pay a blackmailer or send more images, videos, passwords, or codes.
  • Do not publicly post the person’s username or the child’s messages.
  • Do not promise that deleting a post will erase every copy.
  • Do not assume a reporting route from another country applies to your family.
  • Do not treat a platform’s automated response as proof that the risk has ended.

A practical checklist

  1. Stay with the child, thank them, and say they are not in trouble for asking for help.
  2. Record what was shared, with whom, when, and whether threats, pressure, sexual content, or a meeting are involved.
  3. Call local emergency services if someone may reach the child or danger is immediate.
  4. Preserve handles, URLs, timestamps, and message context without circulating intimate material.
  5. Remove exposed details and review privacy, location, tags, contact, and credential settings.
  6. Block and report unwanted accounts through the relevant service.
  7. Use the child-protection, law-enforcement, or image-removal route for your country and the specific risk.
  8. Check in with the child again and escalate for professional support if distress or new contact continues.

Official guidance changes as services and laws change. Before filing a report, confirm the current instructions on the relevant agency’s official page and use the emergency guidance for your own location.
