Start with the transaction ID (txid). Use it to check whether the payment is still unconfirmed or is already included in a block. A pending payment can sometimes be replaced or fee-bumped by the sending wallet; a confirmed payment generally cannot be canceled. Wrong-address and underpayment cases require the recipient or merchant to cooperate, and no legitimate support agent needs your seed phrase or private key.
First, establish exactly what happened
Open the wallet that sent the bitcoin and copy the transaction ID. Then verify four details from the transaction record: the destination address, the amount sent, the fee, and the confirmation status. Check the txid in a reputable block explorer or through the recipient’s official deposit interface, rather than relying only on a colored “pending” label in an app.

A wallet’s pending indicator is not, by itself, proof of a network-wide state. Wallets use different mempool policies and may display a transaction while another node has not accepted it. The key distinction is whether the transaction is unconfirmed or appears in a mined block. Do not send a second payment until you understand that state and have checked with the recipient.

- Confirmed: the transaction is in a block. It may still be waiting for the recipient’s required number of confirmations, but it is no longer a normal cancellation case.
Never paste a seed phrase, private key, wallet backup, or signing password into a support form or website. Anyone who obtains those secrets can move funds; they are not needed to look up a txid.

Why is my Bitcoin transaction still pending?
Low fees can delay the first confirmation
Miners select transactions according to fee and other relay considerations. A lower fee can therefore leave a transaction waiting longer than one paying a higher fee. New blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, but that is a statistical average, not a countdown. The next block can arrive sooner or much later, and no service can promise an exact confirmation time.
Do not assume that a transaction will automatically expire after a fixed number of hours. A wallet or node may eventually drop an unconfirmed transaction from its local mempool, while another node may still retain or rebroadcast it. Dropping from one mempool does not prove that the payment was canceled, and it does not authorize you to spend the coins again without checking the wallet’s current state.
Check whether your wallet supports replacement or fee bumping
If you control the sending wallet, open its official help documentation and look for replace-by-fee (RBF), speed up, or increase fee. The names and eligibility rules vary by wallet. A replacement normally spends the same inputs with a higher fee, subject to relay rules; it may also change the outputs, so read the review screen before approving it.
Bitcoin Core’s documented bumpfee operation replaces a transaction that was created with opt-in RBF. The transaction must be in that wallet, and the replacement pays an additional fee under the applicable relay rules. If the original transaction was not marked replaceable, or the wallet does not control the relevant inputs, this particular operation is unavailable.
RBF is not a guaranteed undo button. BIP 125 warns recipients that an unconfirmed transaction may be replaced, which is why a recipient may wait for confirmation before treating a payment as final. A replacement might be rejected by relay policy, might not reach miners, or might lose a race with the original transaction.

Wallet-specific speed-up and cancel options
Some wallets expose product-specific choices. Bitcoin.com Wallet, for example, describes options to speed up an eligible outgoing transaction, cancel it to an address controlled by the user, or wait. Those controls apply to outgoing transactions initiated by that wallet and are an example of an app’s implementation, not a Bitcoin-wide promise. Follow the wallet’s current instructions and confirm exactly which address will receive any replacement.
If no replacement option is offered, the safest action is usually to monitor the txid and contact the intended recipient through an independently verified official channel. Do not pay a stranger who claims to be a “miner,” “recovery agent,” or support representative who can force confirmation.

There is no universal cancel command after a transaction has been broadcast. Before confirmation, cancellation is possible only through a wallet-supported replacement flow, and only when the transaction and wallet meet that flow’s rules. A successful replacement changes what is confirmed; it does not erase an immutable transaction history.
After confirmation, ordinary cancellation is not available. The practical question becomes whether the recipient will voluntarily return the funds or correct the account entry. Do not promise yourself or anyone else an automatic refund based solely on a pending label or a wallet’s local display.
I sent Bitcoin to the wrong address—can I get it back?
If the transaction is still unconfirmed
Return to the sending wallet and check for an eligible replacement or RBF flow. Before signing anything, inspect the replacement’s outputs and destination. Some wallet “cancel” features send the funds to an address you control; other replacement designs may simply alter the fee. The screen should make the new destination explicit.

There is no guarantee that the replacement will be accepted or confirmed before the original. If the original confirms first, treat the payment as completed on-chain and move to recipient contact.
If the transaction is confirmed
A confirmed payment sent to a valid address cannot be reversed by a central Bitcoin authority. Bitcoin.org’s guidance states: “A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, it can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.” Contact the person or service controlling the destination and provide the txid, amount, date, and a clear explanation of the mistake.
If the address belongs to an exchange, payment processor, or other service, use support reached from that service’s verified website or app—not a phone number or direct message supplied by an unsolicited contact. Recovery depends on whether the service controls the address, can identify the deposit, and permits manual recovery. Some valid addresses are controlled by nobody; coins sent there may be permanently inaccessible.
Do not publish your seed phrase or private key while asking for help. A recipient needs the transaction details to investigate, not the credentials that control your wallet.
I paid the wrong amount for a Bitcoin invoice—what should I do?
Compare the invoice with the actual transaction
Record the invoice or order reference, requested amount, currency conversion terms if shown, destination address, transaction outputs, fee, and confirmation count. Make sure the apparent shortfall is not caused by confusing the network fee with the amount delivered to the merchant. The output sent to the merchant’s address is the amount relevant to the invoice.

If the transaction is unconfirmed, tell the merchant that immediately and provide the txid. If it is confirmed but the account remains uncredited, the problem is usually the merchant’s matching or confirmation policy rather than the Bitcoin network reversing the payment.
Contact the merchant before sending more
Use the merchant’s official support channel and ask which remedy its policy allows:
- crediting the partial payment and marking the invoice settled after an additional payment;
- accepting the outstanding balance as a second transaction; or
- refunding or otherwise handling the payment under its stated policy.
Wait for a clear answer and reconfirm the destination and amount before sending additional funds. Sending another payment to an unverified address can turn one mistake into two.
Bitcoin Payment Protocol BIP 70 describes payment requests, payment matching, and acknowledgments. It does not create a universal underpayment remedy, and not every merchant implements it. A merchant’s own software, confirmation threshold, expiration rules, and manual-review policy determine what happens next.

The transaction says confirmed, but the exchange has not credited it
Separate blockchain confirmation from account crediting. A transaction can be confirmed on-chain while an exchange or service waits for additional confirmations, performs compliance or deposit checks, or requires a matching memo, tag, or order reference on its own system. The service’s published deposit policy controls the crediting threshold.
Contact the service through its independently verified support path. Include the txid, destination address, amount, date and time, asset/network, and the deposit or order reference. Ask whether the transaction is visible to its system and which requirement is outstanding. Do not create a second deposit merely because the balance has not updated.
How many confirmations are enough?
Confirmation depth reduces the risk that a transaction is affected by a competing chain or reorganized block, but it does not create a universal rule for every recipient. Bitcoin.org’s guidance gives these examples:

These are educational guidelines, not a mandatory merchant policy. A service may require a different number, and a high-value transfer may justify waiting longer. Ask the recipient what confirmation threshold it uses before treating a deposit as spendable.

How to avoid address mistakes and recovery scams
Verify the complete address
Compare the entire destination address at the moment you approve the payment. Checking only the first or last few characters is unsafe. Bitcoin.org describes address poisoning, in which a lookalike address is inserted into transaction history so that a user later copies it as if it were a familiar destination.
Prefer an address copied from a trusted invoice or the recipient’s authenticated account. For a high-value payment, consider a small test transfer first and wait for the recipient to confirm receipt before sending the remainder. This reduces, but does not eliminate, operational risk.

- Use a website or app that you navigate to independently, and verify its domain and support path before sharing transaction details.

A practical triage checklist
- Copy the txid from the sending wallet.
- Verify the destination, amount, fee, and confirmation state independently.
- If unconfirmed, check the sender wallet’s official RBF or fee-bump support and review any replacement outputs.
- If confirmed and sent to the wrong address, contact the recipient or destination service; there is no central reversal route.
- If an invoice was underpaid or not credited, contact the merchant with the txid and invoice context before paying again.
- Follow the recipient’s confirmation policy when a deposit is confirmed but not yet credited.
- Keep seed phrases, private keys, and wallet backups private throughout the process.
