Act quickly, but do not assume that an exposure notice means someone has already entered your account or taken money. Verify the notice through the bank or service’s official app or website, determine exactly which information was involved, notify your bank, secure exposed credentials, revoke third-party access, and monitor every affected account.
The right response depends on whether the incident involved a password, bank-login credentials, card or account numbers, Social Security information, or only data held by an aggregator. The steps below are primarily U.S. guidance, with UK-specific advice labeled where it applies.

What an exposure notice does—and does not—mean
A breach notice establishes that information was exposed or may have been accessible. It does not, by itself, prove that an attacker logged in, moved money, opened credit, or even viewed every data field. Treat the notice as a warning that requires verification and protective action, while separately looking for evidence of misuse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not wait for a fraudulent transaction before contacting the institution. Financial information can be used later, and follow-on scams may be more convincing when criminals know the name of your bank, the type of account you use, or details from a budgeting service.

What should you do first?
1. Verify the notice independently
Use a known address for the bank or service, its official mobile app, or the telephone number printed on the back of your card. Do not click a link or call a number supplied only in an unexpected email, text, or phone call. Look for an incident notice in the account’s secure message center and ask the organization to confirm that the alert is genuine.
Request the incident date, the affected product or connection, and the categories of information involved. Ask whether the organization has evidence of account access, attempted transfers, or unauthorized payments, or whether it is notifying customers out of caution.
2. Identify exactly what was exposed
Write down whether the notice refers to any of the following:
- A password, username, security question, PIN, or one-time-code information.
- Credentials used by an app or aggregator to connect to a bank account.
- Checking, savings, debit-card, or credit-card numbers and related details.
- Your Social Security number or other identity information.
- Transaction history, balances, account names, or other data that could make a later impersonation attempt sound credible.
- A permission allowing a third party to view data or move money, including the scope and duration of that permission.
The Federal Trade Commission’s breach-response guidance explains that the exposed data determines the next steps: Have you been affected by a data breach? Read on.
3. Notify the bank or credit union promptly
Tell the fraud or security team that a banking app, budgeting app, account aggregator, or other data-sharing service reported an exposure. Ask the institution to review recent activity, recommend changes to credentials or cards, and explain how to disable the connection. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) states: If a mobile app tells you there has been a data breach that exposed your financial data, also notify your financial institution right away.

Record the date, the representative’s name or identification number, the case number, and every action the institution tells you to take. Keep the breach notice and screenshots in a secure location.
Secure logins and stop unwanted data sharing
Change exposed and reused credentials
Change any password named in the notice immediately. Change the same password anywhere else you used it, especially at another bank, card issuer, email account, or payment service. Use a different strong password for each financial account and turn on multifactor authentication wherever the institution offers it.

Ask the bank whether changing the password automatically invalidates existing sessions or tokens; it may not. Sign out of other sessions if the bank provides that option, and ask whether the institution should replace a compromised card, account number, or access credential.
Revoke the connection instead of merely deleting the app
A data-sharing arrangement may involve three parties: the app you use, an intermediary aggregator, and your bank. Deleting the app from your phone removes local software; it does not necessarily cancel a permission held on the bank’s systems or delete data already copied to the service.
Ask both the service and the bank:
- What information is currently accessible?
- How often is it retrieved?
- How long is it retained?
- Can the connection move money or only read information?
- Which screen or process revokes access?
- How can you request deletion of information that no longer needs to be retained?
The CFPB’s consumer guidance, What to consider when sharing your financial data, explains why access can remain after an app is removed and why consumers should understand the scope and duration of a permission. Some banks provide a dashboard listing third-party connections; if yours does, disable the affected connection there and confirm that the service can no longer refresh data.

Check for unauthorized activity and report it quickly
Review every related account
Examine checking, savings, debit-card, and credit-card activity from before the notice through the present. Look for unfamiliar payees, new electronic transfers, cash withdrawals, recurring debits, changed contact details, and small test charges. Review pending transactions as well as posted ones. An attacker may test a card or account with a small amount before attempting a larger transaction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Continue checking after the initial review. A breach can precede misuse by days or weeks, and a clean account today does not prove that no later attempt will occur. Use the institution’s alerts for new payees, transfers, card-not-present purchases, password changes, and low-balance events when those controls are available.
Report suspicious transactions to the institution
Call the bank or card issuer as soon as you see an unfamiliar transaction and follow its instructions for blocking access, replacing a card, or opening an error investigation. Do not wait for a statement cycle if you can report the problem sooner. Preserve transaction records and your communications, including confirmation numbers.
For U.S. consumers, the CFPB explains the process in How do I get my money back after I discover an unauthorized transaction or money missing from my bank account?. A financial institution generally has 10 business days to investigate a reported unauthorized electronic fund transfer. If it determines that an error occurred, it generally must correct the error within one business day. These are general U.S. rules; the applicable protection, notice period, and possible liability depend on the transaction type, the account, and the circumstances. They do not guarantee a refund or create a reason to delay reporting.
Keep the exposure and the transaction issues separate
Tell the bank both facts if they apply: a service reported an exposure and you found a transaction you do not recognize. A breach notice alone is not an unauthorized-transfer claim, while an unauthorized transfer requires prompt reporting under the institution’s process. Do not assume that changing a password, freezing credit, or deleting an app disputes a payment; each action addresses a different problem.

Choose the response that matches the data
| What may be exposed | Priority action | Problem the action addresses | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|---|
| App or bank password, reused password, or login credential | Change it everywhere it was reused, sign out other sessions if possible, and enable multifactor authentication | Reduces the chance that the exposed credential can be used to sign in | It may not revoke an existing third-party token or reverse an unauthorized transfer |
| Bank-account credentials held by an aggregator | Change the financial-account password and ask the bank how to revoke the connection | Limits direct access and future data refreshes | Deleting the app alone may leave the permission active |
| Debit-card, credit-card, or account details | Ask the issuer whether to block or replace the card or account; monitor and report transactions | Reduces payment fraud and creates a record of suspected unauthorized activity | It does not protect against new-credit identity theft caused by separate identity data |
| Social Security number or other identity information | Use the FTC recovery plan and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze | Helps address identity theft and new-account fraud | It does not secure existing bank logins or dispute money already removed |
| Read-only transaction history or balances | Ask what remains accessible, revoke the permission, and watch for convincing impersonation attempts | Limits future data exposure and helps you recognize targeted scams | It does not prove that no other credential or account data was exposed |
Use identity-theft recovery tools when identity data is involved
If the notice includes identity information, or if someone has used your information, start at IdentityTheft.gov’s Recovery Steps. The FTC plan directs victims to contact the companies where fraud occurred, close or secure affected accounts, change logins and PINs, and document what happened.
A fraud alert asks businesses to take additional steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file for new-credit applications. Either may be appropriate when identity information was exposed, but neither replaces bank-account security, transaction monitoring, or a dispute with the institution that handled an unauthorized payment.
The CFPB’s identity-theft guidance, last reviewed July 30, 2026, answers What do I do if I am a victim of identity theft?. Use the guidance that matches your situation rather than placing a freeze automatically for every notice that involved only an app password.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Expect follow-on impersonation attempts
Information from a breach can make a fraudulent call, email, or text appear authentic. A caller may know the name of your bank, the last digits of a card, or that you use a particular financial app. Treat an urgent request for a passcode, full password, remote access, payment, or transfer as suspicious.
If someone claims to represent the bank, end the interaction and contact the bank through its official app, a known website address, or the number on the back of your card. Do not use a number supplied by the caller or reply to the message. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office gives this verification advice in What steps can I take if I’ve been affected by a personal data breach?. The ICO guidance is UK-specific, but independently verifying unexpected contacts is a sensible precaution elsewhere.

Understand who controls the data-sharing connection
Do not assume that the company that sent the breach email is the only organization with relevant records. The app may have requested data through an aggregator, while the bank controls the account permission. Contact each party and ask what information was exposed, whether access is still active, and whether copied data can be deleted under the service’s policy.
Ask the bank whether it can show a list of third-party services with access to your accounts and whether it can disable an individual connection without closing the account. Ask the app or aggregator to confirm the date access stopped and whether it will notify you if another incident affects retained data. Keep written confirmations because a verbal promise that a connection is closed may be difficult to verify later.
A practical decision path
If you received a notice but see no suspicious activity
- Verify the notice through an official channel.
- Identify the exposed fields and whether a third party still has access.
- Notify the bank, change exposed or reused credentials, enable multifactor authentication, and revoke the connection.
- Turn on account alerts and continue reviewing activity.
If a password or bank credential was exposed
- Change the bank password and every reused password.
- Ask the bank to invalidate sessions, tokens, or third-party access that remain active.
- Review recent login and transaction activity, then report anything unfamiliar immediately.
If you find an unauthorized transfer or payment
- Contact the financial institution immediately and state that the transaction is unauthorized.
- Follow its process for blocking access, replacing cards, and submitting an error report.
- Record dates, case numbers, and the transaction details; continue monitoring while the institution investigates.
If Social Security information or identity data was exposed
- Follow the tailored plan at IdentityTheft.gov.
- Contact any company where fraud occurred and secure or close affected accounts.
- Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze for new-credit protection, while separately securing existing bank access.
What the available evidence says about scale
There is no current general statistic in the cited guidance that measures how many people are affected specifically by banking-app or financial-data-sharing breaches. The FTC’s October 2022 article discusses a particular breach involving data from 2.5 million Drizly users. That figure describes that incident only; it is not an estimate of the frequency or average size of financial-app breaches.
U.S. rules, UK advice, and other jurisdictions
The investigation timing described above comes from U.S. CFPB guidance and concerns unauthorized electronic fund transfers. Card networks, debit transactions, wire transfers, account types, and local laws can have different notice requirements and liability rules. Readers outside the United States should contact their bank promptly and consult the regulator or ombudsman for their jurisdiction rather than applying the 10-business-day statement as a universal deadline.
The UK ICO page cited here is public guidance for people in the United Kingdom. Its warning to verify unexpected contacts is broadly useful, but it should not be read as establishing U.S. reporting deadlines, liability rules, or a single worldwide breach-notification standard.
