Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore accepting an AV receiver firmware update, identify the exact model and regional version, check the installed firmware, read that model’s release notes, and confirm the approved update route. Prepare the network or USB drive exactly as the manual specifies, protect settings if the receiver supports a backup, and schedule enough uninterrupted time. Once installation starts, do not power off, unplug, operate, or disconnect the receiver until it reports completion.
Start with the exact receiver model and region
Firmware instructions are not interchangeable between receivers, even within one product family. Write down the complete model number, suffix, and market or regional version from the front panel, rear label, setup menu, or purchase documentation. A model sold in one region may use different firmware from a similarly named unit elsewhere.

Open the manufacturer’s current support page or manual for that exact version. That document determines whether the receiver supports network updating, USB updating, or only one of those methods; which file, port, drive format, and menu commands apply; how long the process may take; and what happens to stored settings.

Do not use a procedure written for a near-identical model. The right preparation for an unidentified receiver cannot be established from a cross-brand checklist.

Check whether an update is actually needed
Record the installed firmware
Use the receiver’s information or system menu to display its current firmware version and record it. Sony’s STR-DN1050 instructions specifically require checking the installed version to determine whether an upgrade is necessary. The menu wording differs by model, so use the exact manual rather than guessing a button sequence.
Match the offered release to the model
Compare the displayed version with the release offered for your model and market. Confirm that the file or online update is newer and intended for your receiver. Read the release information for prerequisites, fixes, warnings, and any required restart. Yamaha advises users to confirm the information supplied with an update before installing it.
If the installed version already matches the current release, there is no reason to force an update. If the support page lists an intermediate version or a special order of installation, follow that instruction instead of improvising.
Choose a supported update route
Use only the route documented for your receiver. Some models offer both network and USB options; others require one method. Sony’s STR-DN1050 support instructions say that model can be upgraded only through a network update, while Yamaha documents network and USB choices for applicable receivers.
| Route | Use it when | Checks before starting | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network update | The exact model’s manual lists an online update and the receiver can reach the required service. | Confirm the receiver’s wired or wireless connection, stable internet access, and any model-specific network requirements. | A network interruption during installation can cause malfunction or leave the receiver unresponsive. |
| USB update | The exact model explicitly supports USB updating or requires it. | Use the specified drive capacity, format, file name, folder location, and USB port. Verify that the download is for the exact model and region. | Unsupported drives, misplaced files, or the wrong regional firmware can stop the procedure or damage the update process. |
A USB flash drive is unnecessary for a network-only receiver. Conversely, do not assume a network update is available simply because another receiver from the same manufacturer offers one.

Prepare a network update
Verify the connection
Check the receiver’s network status in its setup menu and, where the manual requires it, confirm that it can reach the update service. Onkyo’s TX-NR515 manual explicitly tells users to check the network connection before updating. Avoid starting while the router is rebooting, the internet connection is unstable, or another change is being made to the home network.
Remove avoidable interruptions
Keep the receiver connected to power and to the required network for the entire process. Do not schedule a router reset, change network equipment, or move the receiver during installation. If the manual calls for a wired connection, use that rather than substituting wireless.

Follow the model’s media specification
Read the current manual for the required USB capacity, file system, file placement, and port. Copy only the manufacturer’s update file, exactly as supplied, unless the instructions specify a folder or additional files. Safely eject the drive from the computer before inserting it into the receiver.
The Onkyo TX-NR515 USB procedure, documented in its 2012 manual, requires at least 32 MB of free space. That figure applies only to that model and procedure; it is not a current universal USB requirement. The same manual warns that compatibility is not guaranteed for every USB device.
Prevent file and region errors
- Confirm the download is for the full model number and regional version.
- Do not rename, unzip, or relocate files unless the manual tells you to.
- Use the specified USB port; front and rear ports are not automatically equivalent.
- Keep the drive connected and untouched after the receiver begins reading it.
Protect settings before installation
Never assume that speaker calibration, input names, network credentials, radio presets, sound modes, or other preferences will survive. Retention behavior differs by model and update.

The Onkyo TX-NR515 manual says its settings are retained. Denon’s AVR-S950H instructions warn that backup data for parameters may be reset in some cases. These statements cannot be generalized to every receiver. Check the exact manual for a supported backup, export, or restore function and use it before updating if available.
If no backup feature exists, photograph or write down important values: speaker distances and levels, crossover points, equalizer settings, input assignments, custom names, network details, and any calibration results. Do not rely on a phone photograph of a menu as a substitute for a manufacturer-supported backup when one is available.
Put the receiver in a safe pre-update state
Stop playback and close any operation that could send commands to the receiver. Some manuals require additional steps; others do not. The older Onkyo TX-NR515 instructions specifically list stopping playback and disabling or turning off HDMI control, a network controller, and Multi Zone before updating. Apply those steps only when your receiver’s instructions call for them.
Disconnecting ordinary speakers or HDMI cables is not a universal requirement and can create new problems. Leave connections alone unless the model-specific procedure says otherwise. The important rule is to stop using the receiver and avoid remote, app, computer, or multiroom commands once the update begins.
Reserve enough uninterrupted time
Firmware installation can take much longer than the download alone. Yamaha gives an example of about 20 minutes or more for a network update on the RX-A6A. Denon’s AVR-S950H procedure takes approximately one hour. These are manufacturer-stated, model-specific examples, not a universal estimate or independently measured average.

Choose a period when nobody needs the receiver and when power and network service can remain stable. Do not begin immediately before a movie, presentation, event, or travel. Keep the remote nearby only for instructions that explicitly require it; otherwise, leave the unit alone.
What not to touch once installation starts
Follow the on-screen prompts and the exact manual, then wait. Sony’s STR-DN1050 instructions state: “Do not operate, power off, or disconnect the receiver from the AC power outlet until after the update is complete.” Yamaha’s RX-V4A manual similarly says: “Do not operate the unit or disconnect the power cable or network cable during firmware update.”
- Do not press the power button or unplug the AC cable.
- Do not disconnect the network cable or remove the USB drive.
- Do not operate the receiver, change inputs, or start playback.
- Do not access it from a computer, phone app, network controller, or remote automation system unless the instructions explicitly request an action.
- Do not switch off connected equipment that the procedure requires to remain available.
Onkyo also warns against touching connected cables, powering down, or accessing the receiver from a PC while its update is running. An interruption can cause malfunction, leave the unit unresponsive, or require service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the normal update sequence
A receiver may restart more than once. Sony’s documented STR-DN1050 sequence includes downloading the update, an automatic restart, installation by the main unit, another automatic restart, and a completion message. A blank display, relay click, or temporary loss of audio during an instructed restart is not by itself evidence of failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer completion from the download finishing. Wait for the receiver’s finish message or the final instruction in the model’s procedure.

Verify that the update finished
- Wait for the explicit completion message and any instructed restart to finish.
- Open the receiver’s information or system menu.
- Display the firmware version again.
- Compare it with the release version you intended to install.
- Restore settings only through the model’s documented backup or restore process.
- Test basic operation, such as an input, network connection, and audio output, without changing several settings at once.
Checking the version is the success test identified in Sony’s instructions and is more reliable than assuming a restart means the update succeeded.
If the update fails or the receiver is unresponsive
When an error appears
Record the exact error message, displayed code, current version, update route, and model suffix. Do not repeatedly remove power or retry with a different file. Return to the exact manufacturer procedure and look for its recovery steps before taking any action.
When the unit stops responding
Do not invent a reset sequence or use firmware for another model. Yamaha directs users to an authorized dealer or service center when an interruption causes malfunction; Sony warns that repair may be required. Contact the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized service center with the information you recorded.

When settings disappear
Use the documented restore function if a supported backup exists. Otherwise, re-enter settings from your notes or photographs. A reset does not necessarily mean the firmware failed; Denon’s AVR-S950H documentation specifically warns that parameter backup data may be reset in some cases.
