Before selling or giving away a Samsung Galaxy, back up and verify the data you want to keep, remove your Google and Samsung accounts, perform a full factory data reset, and take out any physical SIM or microSD card. Check your carrier’s instructions for an eSIM, then leave the phone at its initial setup screen without signing back in. The exact reset menus can vary by model, software version, and provider.
First, decide how the phone will change hands
A private sale or gift and a mailed trade-in share the same core privacy steps, but they do not necessarily have the same packing or eligibility rules. For a trade-in, follow the current offer for your country. Back up what you want to keep—and verify it
A factory reset removes data from the phone, so first confirm that the important material is preserved somewhere you can access after the handoff. Samsung’s guidance includes backing up with Smart Switch on a PC: install and open Smart Switch, connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable, allow access on the phone, and select Backup. Do not assume one backup includes every app’s private or cloud-synced information. Samsung notes that Smart Switch does not transfer hidden files or Secure Folder files; check those separately and use each app’s own migration or backup steps where needed. A cable for the PC method must support data transfer and fit the phone and computer ports; a charging-only cable will not serve that connection. This wired method is optional if another backup method suits your device and data.

Remove accounts before resetting
Sign out of or remove the Google and Samsung accounts from the phone before the reset, and make sure you know the credentials. An account left on the device can trigger a post-reset security check: Google Factory Reset Protection may require the previous Google account during setup, while a Samsung reset flow may ask for the Samsung account password. Samsung’s trade-in guidance also warns that accounts or software locks can affect acceptance. The account-removal screens vary by software version. Run a full factory data reset
Choose the full data reset, not an option that resets only selected settings. Samsung US distinguishes these: a settings reset does not remove personal data. On supported Galaxy software, the usual route is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset; review the confirmation screen and proceed with the reset. Menu labels and screens can differ by model, software version, and provider. Samsung Singapore notes that the Samsung account password may be required if you are signed in. Remove cards and check your mobile service
- Physical SIM: Take it out and keep it or dispose of it according to your carrier’s instructions.
- microSD card: Remove it if present. A factory reset does not erase data stored on an SD card; keep it or erase it separately if you intend to pass it on.
- eSIM: Check your carrier’s process and follow the phone’s transfer or removal prompts. There is no single procedure established here for every carrier and Galaxy model.

After the reset, let the phone restart and confirm it reaches the initial setup screen. Do not sign back in to test it, and do not give the recipient your account passwords. For a direct handoff, you may also provide relevant accessories or an available invoice if useful; Samsung Germany presents these as guidance for a personal transfer, not a universal requirement.
