Before you finish An Unheard Farewell in Valor Mortis, complete the scouts’ hidden cave objective beneath the elevator. From The Climb, destroy the two glowing Nephtoglobin growths, call the lift, jump onto the concealed ledge halfway up, burn through the web-like barrier with fire transmutation, defeat the elite soldier and take the scouts’ letter. Only then return to the Adjutant Sous-Officier near the Demolished Path and resolve the dialogue.
Both dialogue choices award the Sleight of Hand Amber. The difference appears after you rest: telling the truth leads to additional catalysts, while lying leads to the Adjutant’s corpse and a Remnant’s Return. The quest can be completed later because its areas remain revisitable.

Start the quest correctly
An Unheard Farewell begins in the Valley of Ashes. Speak with the Adjutant Sous-Officier after the first Grenadier encounter and agree to help. This conversation establishes the objective involving the missing scouts. If you have already moved past this section, do not assume the opportunity is gone; the side-quest route is revisitable.

The scouts’ cave is positioned around the elevator route, so simply continuing toward the next area can leave the quest apparently unresolved. Keep the quest active while advancing and pay attention to the lift machinery near the upper part of The Climb.

Reach the upper elevator area
- Advance through the level. Follow the normal route from the Valley of Ashes and continue through The Climb.
- Obtain the pistol. The pistol is acquired before the elevator sequence and is needed for the glowing targets that activate the lift.
- Reach the top of the initial elevator route. Do not jump into an alternate path yet. Your objective is to reach the point where the two glowing Nephtoglobin growths are visible.
- Shoot both growths. Destroy each glowing Nephtoglobin growth before attempting to use the lift mechanism.
- Pull the lever. Once the growths are destroyed, operate the lever to call the elevator into position.
The growths are a progression requirement for this detour. If the elevator is not available where you need it, return to the upper platform and check that both targets were destroyed before trying the lever again.
Find the scouts’ cave during the ride
Ride the elevator, but do not remain on it until the normal destination. The entrance to the missing-scouts objective is reached by leaving the lift about halfway through its travel. Watch the surrounding walls and ledges as the elevator moves; the destination is a ledge on the side opposite the route you used on the way up.
Identify the correct ledge
The ledge is not the platform you first used to begin the elevator route. It sits across from that original path and can pass unnoticed if you focus only on the upper landing. Jump off the elevator at approximately the midpoint of the ascent and land on this opposite ledge. If you ride past it, you will need to reposition the lift and try the approach again rather than searching the upper route for the cave.

Open the barrier
On the ledge, look for a wall covered by a web-like or gold-vine growth. It is the entrance to the scouts’ concealed area. Use fire transmutation on the barrier; ordinary movement through the wall will not open it. Once the growth burns away, continue into the passage.

Defeat the guarding enemy
A strong soldier protects the objective. Guides variously call this enemy a tough soldier, elite soldier or miniboss; these labels refer to the same encounter in this step. Defeat the guard before searching the area so that you can collect the objective without being interrupted.
Take the scouts’ notes
Search the cleared area and pick up the scouts’ written report. PowerPyx gives the item’s in-game title as Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infranty, including that spelling. Collecting the letter is the step that turns the elevator detour into a completed investigation; reaching the cave without taking the note is not enough.
Return to the Adjutant
Resume the main route after collecting the letter. Continue until you reach the Adjutant Sous-Officier near the Demolished Path lantern. Speak with him there and choose whether to tell the truth about what you found or to lie.
The follow-up is tied to resting. After making your choice, rest and then speak to the Adjutant again when the branch calls for it. The immediate Amber reward does not depend on the answer, but the post-rest result does.

Truth versus lie

What the truth choice gives you
The truth route awards the same Sleight of Hand Amber as the lie route. After resting, return to the Adjutant and complete the additional conversation to receive the branch’s extra catalysts. Choose this route if catalysts are more useful to your current build or if you want the Adjutant available for the immediate follow-up.
What the lie choice gives you
Lying also grants the Sleight of Hand Amber immediately. After you rest, travel back to the scouts’ cave. The Adjutant’s corpse appears there, and it can be looted for Remnant’s Return. This is a one-use item that lets you reclaim catalysts dropped when you die. The item is therefore a recovery tool rather than another permanent Amber reward.
Which option should you pick?
There is no difference in the Amber reward: both answers provide Sleight of Hand. Base the decision on the follow-up item and story state. Truth gives additional catalysts through the later Adjutant conversation; lie gives access to Remnant’s Return in the cave after resting. Your choice changes the immediate narrative outcome, so select the branch that fits whether you value upgrade materials or a single-use death-recovery item.
Rewards and completion credit
Sleight of Hand is the listed quest reward regardless of the dialogue answer. Completing the side quest also contributes to the Aggressive Reconnaissance bronze trophy. The trophy credit is tied to completing the investigation, including the scouts’ objective and the return conversation, not to choosing one particular response.

PC Gamer’s Sean Martin summarized the reward condition on 13 October 2026: “No matter what you choose to tell the Adjutant Sous-Officier, you’ll get the Sleight of Hand amber.” That distinction matters because the post-rest branch rewards can make the choices look like different reward tiers when the Amber itself is identical.

You continued past the elevator
Return to the elevator section through the level’s revisitable areas. Reacquire the lift position by destroying both glowing Nephtoglobin growths and pulling the lever. Ride it again and leave halfway for the opposite ledge. The cave is a mid-elevator secret, not a room on the straightforward route to the top.
The lift is not in the right position
Check the two growths first. Both must be destroyed before the elevator can be called to the position needed for the jump. If one remains glowing, complete that target, operate the lever and make another pass.

Look for the web-like or gold-vine wall on the opposite ledge and use fire transmutation. The barrier is a deliberate ability check; searching for a normal doorway or attacking it without the fire transformation will not reveal the passage.
You reached the cave but the quest did not advance
Make sure you defeated the guarding soldier and picked up the letter, whose full title is Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infranty. Then continue to the Adjutant near the Demolished Path lantern and complete the conversation. The note, rather than merely entering the cave, is the collectible that confirms the scouts’ discovery.
You already chose a dialogue answer
Rest to trigger the branch-specific follow-up. Truth requires returning to the Adjutant for the extra catalysts. Lie requires checking the scouts’ cave for the corpse and Remnant’s Return. The Amber is not lost because of either answer.
Final pre-completion checklist
- Spoke to the Adjutant Sous-Officier in the Valley of Ashes after the first Grenadier and accepted the quest.
- Obtained the pistol and reached the upper elevator route in The Climb.
- Destroyed both glowing Nephtoglobin growths.
- Pulled the lever and called the elevator.
- Jumped off around halfway onto the ledge opposite the original route.
- Burned the web-like or gold-vine barrier with fire transmutation.
- Defeated the tough soldier, elite soldier or miniboss guarding the area.
- Collected the scouts’ letter.
- Returned to the Adjutant near the Demolished Path lantern.
- Rested and completed the appropriate follow-up for the truth or lie branch.
The side quest is reported as not missable because its areas can be revisited. If a future game patch changes elevator behavior, enemy placement or branch rewards, verify the current in-game prompts; the procedural details above reflect guides published on 13 October 2026.
