What should I do after a tanning injection?
Stop the product now. Do not take another injection, add a “counteracting” medicine, or try to dilute, flush, or otherwise treat the dose at home. Scottish NHS guidance states: “If you use Melanotan II, or any other nasal or injection tanning products, you should stop using them immediately.” The same guidance advises speaking with a doctor as soon as possible if side effects occur.

Contact a clinician or a poison-information service even if you are unsure whether the product was genuine. Tanning peptides can be sold through channels where the contents, concentration, sterility and storage conditions have not been independently verified. Cancer Research UK says melanotan products have not been tested for safety, quality or effectiveness and could contain harmful chemicals that are not listed on the label. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has also warned about serious health risks linked to melanotan-containing tanning products. Authorization and regulatory status vary by country; Scottish NHS describes Melanotan II sprays and injections as unauthorized in the UK.
When you call, explain the product name or label, how much you used, when you used it, how it entered your body, and every symptom you have noticed. Mention alcohol, recreational drugs, supplements and prescription or non-prescription medicines taken around the same time. Tell the clinician if the product was reconstituted, mixed, stored improperly, or shared with anyone. Keep the vial, syringe packaging, outer box, label and batch information, or take clear photographs. NHS poisoning guidance recommends finding the container or packaging for clinicians when this can be done safely.

When should I go to the ER or call emergency services?
Use your local emergency number or go to an emergency department immediately if you develop any of the following:
- Severe difficulty breathing, noisy breathing or rapidly worsening shortness of breath.
- Sudden swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat.
- Fainting, collapse, loss of consciousness or a seizure.
- A severe allergic-type reaction with rapidly spreading symptoms, marked dizziness or confusion.
Do not drive yourself if you are faint, confused, having trouble breathing or at risk of losing consciousness. Ask someone to stay with you while emergency help is arranged. These signs can represent a medical emergency; they do not identify the exact substance or reaction, so do not wait for a home test or for the symptoms to “settle.”
A severe sunburn is also an emergency that should be examined by a doctor right away, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This is separate from the injection itself, but it matters if you used the product to intensify tanning or spent time in strong sunlight or a sunbed.
Which symptoms need prompt medical advice?
Seek prompt medical advice for any new or worsening symptom after the injection, even if it initially seems mild. Scottish NHS lists nausea, drowsiness, vomiting and loss of appetite among possible side effects and notes that more severe reactions can occur.

NSW Health advises urgent attention for concerning symptoms after use of unapproved peptides, including:
- Fever.
- Increasing pain, redness or swelling at the injection site.
- Unusual tiredness or weakness.
- Abdominal pain.
- Intense itching.
- Dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
- Unusual bruising.
Do not wait for these problems to become severe. NHS poisoning guidance notes that symptoms can take hours or days to begin. Feeling normal immediately after an injection therefore does not prove that the product was safe or that follow-up is unnecessary.
What if I feel fine after the injection?
Still stop using the product and arrange advice from a clinician or poison-information service. The reason is uncertainty: an unapproved vial may contain a different chemical, concentration or contaminant than its label suggests. The absence of symptoms cannot establish the dose, rule out delayed effects, or show that the injection was sterile.

Do not take another dose to “finish” a tanning course, and do not use a sunbed or deliberately extend sun exposure to amplify the color. A tan is not protection from ultraviolet radiation; the FDA says there is no safe tan and that tanning increases skin-cancer risk.

Who do I call about a peptide injection?
Use the poison centre or urgent medical pathway for the country where you are located. Numbers and services are not universal. NHS poisoning information applies to the UK and directs people to immediate medical advice when poisoning is possible. In New South Wales, NSW Health lists the NSW Poisons Information Centre at 13 11 26, available 24 hours. If you are elsewhere, contact your regional poison centre, urgent-care service or emergency number rather than relying on a number from another country.
Call emergency services instead of a poison centre when severe breathing problems, collapse, a seizure, loss of consciousness or severe allergic symptoms are present. For less severe symptoms, a poison specialist or clinician can decide whether you need an examination, monitoring or other care.
What information should I give the clinician?
Clear details help the care team assess an unknown exposure. Have these points ready:

- The exact product name, brand or description, including whether it was called melanotan, Melanotan II or another peptide.
- The amount injected, the time and date, and whether this was a first or repeated dose.
- The injection route and site, and whether the liquid was mixed or reconstituted before use.
- Every symptom, when it started, and whether it is improving or worsening.
- Other medicines, supplements, alcohol or recreational substances used around the same time.
- Whether anyone else used the vial, syringe or other equipment.
Bring the vial, packaging and instructions if you can do so without delaying emergency care. Do not handle discarded needles; place them only in an appropriate sharps container if one is available and local guidance permits.

What if I shared the needle or other equipment?
Tell a clinician promptly if you shared a needle, syringe, vial or other injection equipment. Do not omit this detail because of embarrassment. Cancer Research UK advises talking to a GP after sharing needles. Scottish NHS identifies injection-related risks including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, nerve damage and blood infection.
A clinician can decide which tests, vaccinations, preventive treatment or follow-up schedule are appropriate. Testing windows and prevention choices depend on the exposure and your health history, so do not assume that an immediate negative test settles the question. Until you have medical advice, do not share any injection equipment with another person.
How should I handle sunlight and sunbeds afterward?
Do not use another tanning injection and do not treat the resulting color as a sunscreen. Scottish NHS says Melanotan II may cause tanning when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or sunbeds. A darker appearance does not remove ultraviolet damage or make intentional exposure safe.
Avoid additional deliberate ultraviolet exposure while you seek advice, and use ordinary sun-protection measures such as shade, protective clothing and sunscreen. If you have a severe sunburn, seek immediate medical assessment; the FDA advises that severe sunburn should be treated as a medical emergency and examined by a doctor right away.
Why can an injectable tanning peptide be risky?
Products sold outside an authorized medical supply chain may not have been tested for identity, sterility, dose accuracy, safety or effectiveness. Scottish NHS describes Melanotan II tanning sprays and injections in the UK as unauthorized, not tested and of unknown contents. Cancer Research UK similarly warns that melanotan products may contain harmful, undeclared chemicals. The TGA’s warnings show that concerns also exist in Australia, but a product’s legal status and available reporting pathway depend on where you live.
This uncertainty is why a fixed “safe dose” or a wait-and-see rule cannot be provided for every person. The same label may represent different contents, and a vial can be contaminated during manufacture, mixing or injection. A clinician or poison specialist can interpret the product information together with your symptoms, medical history and other exposures.
A practical decision guide

What not to do while arranging care
- Do not inject a further dose or use a different tanning peptide to compensate.
- Do not induce vomiting or take an unadvised medicine, supplement or “detox” product.
- Do not discard the vial or label before speaking with a clinician or poison specialist.
- Do not wait for a severe reaction before seeking advice if symptoms are developing.
- Do not use shared needles or syringes again.
- Do not assume a tan protects you from ultraviolet radiation.
The safest next step is individualized medical advice based on the actual product, timing, route, amount and symptoms. Emergency signs require emergency services; all other possible exposures still warrant prompt contact with a qualified clinician or local poison-information service.
