Contact with a cat does not automatically expose you to toxoplasmosis. Infection requires accidentally swallowing Toxoplasma gondii, usually from contaminated cat feces, litter, soil, food or water. If a recent incident could have put fecal material into your mouth, wash your hands and contact a healthcare provider if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, immunocompromised or develop concerning symptoms. A clinician—not an article—decides whether testing or treatment is appropriate.
First steps after a possible exposure
Act on the plausible route of transmission rather than on the mere presence of a cat. If the event just happened, complete these steps:

- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water. Pay attention to fingertips, around nails and between fingers. Do this after handling litter, feces, contaminated soil or an item that may carry them.
- Remove the possible source safely. Avoid touching your face or eating until your hands are clean. Use ordinary household hygiene to clean visibly contaminated surfaces. The available public guidance does not establish a special post-exposure decontamination procedure.
- Write down what happened. Note the date and time, whether feces or litter were involved, whether material could have reached your mouth, and whether you are pregnant, might be pregnant or have a condition or medicine that weakens immunity.
- Call a healthcare provider when the stakes are higher. Contact one promptly if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, have significant immunocompromise, or believe you swallowed contaminated material. Ask whether testing or follow-up is appropriate for your circumstances.
- Seek medical assessment if symptoms appear. Eye symptoms need clinical evaluation; severe symptoms, including serious neurologic symptoms, warrant urgent care. Do not start, stop or change medicine based on a possible exposure alone.
These steps are sensible for a possible exposure, but they cannot diagnose infection. A single contact with a cat or litter does not prove that transmission occurred.
What actually transmits toxoplasmosis?
Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. People can become infected when they accidentally ingest the parasite. Cat feces can contaminate litter, hands, soil, food or water; swallowing contaminated material without washing hands is one recognized route. The relevant question is therefore whether contaminated material could have reached your mouth, not simply whether you touched a cat.

The NHS states: “You cannot catch toxoplasmosis from stroking a cat, having a cat as a pet or from coming into contact with someone who’s got it.” Ordinary petting and ownership, without a plausible fecal-contamination-and-ingestion route, are not identified as transmission routes in that guidance.
| Situation | How to interpret it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Petting or holding a cat; no feces or litter involved | This is not, by itself, a described route of infection. | Normal hand hygiene is reasonable; no automatic test or medicine is indicated by the contact alone. |
| Touching litter, feces or contaminated soil, then washing hands before eating | There may be contact, but ingestion is not established. | Wash hands and monitor for concerns; contact a provider if you are in a higher-risk group or remain worried. |
| Handling litter or soil and then touching your mouth or food with unwashed hands | This is a plausible accidental-ingestion route. | Wash immediately and describe the event to a healthcare provider, especially during pregnancy or immunocompromise. |
| Visible fecal material in the mouth or swallowed | Ingestion is more credible than in the scenarios above, although infection still is not certain. | Clean up, record when it happened and seek individualized medical advice. |
| Exposure plus new eye symptoms or severe neurologic symptoms | Symptoms require assessment rather than self-diagnosis. | Arrange prompt medical care; urgent symptoms should be treated as urgent. |
There is no validated risk score that converts these details into a reliable percentage for one person. Timing, the material involved, possible ingestion, pregnancy, immune status and symptoms help a clinician decide what evaluation makes sense.
Why pregnancy and weakened immunity change the advice
Pregnancy or possible pregnancy
A newly acquired infection during or shortly before pregnancy can pass to a fetus. If you are pregnant or might be pregnant and a plausible ingestion occurred, contact your healthcare provider and explain exactly what happened and when. Do not wait for symptoms: many infected people have none. Your provider can decide whether blood testing, repeat evaluation or other follow-up is appropriate under local practice.

If you are pregnant, ask someone else to change cat litter when possible. If you must do it, use disposable gloves and wash your hands carefully afterward. These precautions reduce future opportunities for ingestion; they do not prove or disprove an earlier exposure.
Immunocompromised people
Severe immunocompromise can increase the risk of serious toxoplasmosis. Relevant examples include HIV, certain chemotherapy treatments and a recent organ transplant, but the effect depends on your individual condition and medicines. Contact the clinician managing your care after a plausible exposure, even if you feel well. Do not alter prescribed immune-suppressing treatment or take antiparasitic drugs without medical direction.
Symptoms and when to seek care
Most healthy people with toxoplasmosis have no symptoms and recover without treatment. An exposure therefore cannot be confirmed or ruled out by how you feel. A healthcare provider should evaluate new eye symptoms, because ocular toxoplasmosis is assessed by an ophthalmologist. Severe symptoms, particularly serious neurologic symptoms, call for urgent clinical care.

Do not use a symptom checklist to diagnose yourself. Explain both the possible exposure and the symptom, including when each began. Pregnancy, immune status and the type of symptom change the urgency and the appropriate specialist.
Testing after a possible exposure
A clinician may order blood tests when toxoplasmosis is suspected. Testing can also be used to assess prior infection in some higher-risk contexts. However, public guidance does not specify one universal blood-test schedule after a single contact with cat feces. The right test, timing and need for repeat testing depend on your clinical history, pregnancy status, immune function and local practice.
When you call, provide:
- the date and approximate time of contact;
- whether the material was fresh feces, litter, soil or another item;
- whether you touched your mouth, ate, drank or handled food before washing;
- whether the cat’s feces had been in a litter box and, if known, how long it had been there;
- whether you are pregnant, might be pregnant, immunocompromised or taking immune-suppressing medicines; and
- any eye, neurologic or other new symptoms.
A test result needs professional interpretation. Do not order repeated tests on your own or assume that a positive result proves that this particular event caused infection.

Treatment is a medical decision
Most healthy people do not need treatment. Providers may treat people during pregnancy, infants and immunocompromised patients; eye disease is managed with an ophthalmologist. CDC clinical-care information explains that available drugs target the parasite’s tachyzoite stage and do not eradicate encysted parasites in tissues. That is one reason a prescription should be selected for the person and clinical situation, not taken as preventive self-treatment.
There is no recommendation here to take an over-the-counter product, obtain leftover medicine or ask for prophylactic medication solely because you touched a cat or litter. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless the clinician who prescribed them tells you otherwise.

Litter and cat-care practices
- Change litter daily when possible. CDC notes that shed oocysts generally take one to five days to become infectious; daily cleaning lowers the time available for them to mature, but it is not a guarantee about any individual exposure.
- Use disposable gloves when handling litter that cannot be delegated, and wash hands with soap and water afterward.
- During pregnancy or significant immunocompromise, have someone else handle litter if possible.
- Do not touch your mouth, food or eating utensils while cleaning litter. Wash hands before preparing or eating food.
Gardening and soil
Soil can be contaminated by cat feces. Wear gloves for gardening or other unavoidable contact with potentially contaminated soil, then wash your hands. Gloves are an additional barrier, not a replacement for handwashing and not a requirement for ordinary contact with a cat.

Food and water hygiene
Contaminated food or water can also carry T. gondii. Follow routine food-safety and handwashing practices, especially after handling soil or litter and before eating. A cat-related concern still depends on a plausible ingestion route; do not treat every encounter with a cat as a foodborne exposure.
A practical decision guide
Low-concern contact
You stroked or lived with a cat, did not handle feces or litter, and have no plausible way contaminated material entered your mouth. Wash your hands as a general hygiene measure. The contact alone does not establish a need for testing or medication.
Uncertain contact
You handled litter, feces or soil but cannot tell whether you touched your mouth or food before washing. Clean your hands and surfaces, record the details and call a healthcare provider if you are pregnant, might be pregnant or immunocompromised. For a healthy person, a provider can discuss whether any evaluation is useful; there is no automatic testing schedule.

How common is infection?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than 40 million people in the United States are infected with Toxoplasma. That figure appears on a CDC page dated 2025; the page does not identify a separate measurement year. A large population estimate does not predict whether one cat-related event caused infection, so individual decisions still depend on ingestion, pregnancy, immune status and symptoms.
Questions to take to your healthcare provider
- Was my event a plausible ingestion exposure, or was it ordinary cat contact?
- Given my pregnancy or immune status, do you recommend a blood test or follow-up?
- Which symptoms should prompt routine versus urgent care?
- Should any of my current medicines be reviewed?
- What litter, gardening and food precautions fit my household?
Those questions help the clinician apply guidance to your history without turning a general article into a diagnosis.
