Stop digging, leave the object and surrounding soil in place, document the findspot, and contact the land manager or heritage authority before moving it. The correct legal next step depends on the country, land status and type of discovery. An isolated object on private land is treated differently from a concentration in an archaeological layer, a find in a national park, possible human remains or material from a wreck.
Immediate actions at the hole
Preservation comes before identification, cleaning or ownership questions. Treat an apparently ordinary coin or tool as potentially significant until its context has been assessed.

- Stop detecting and stop enlarging the hole. Do not probe around the object, excavate a wider area or remove nearby soil, stones, pottery, metal or fragments.
- Leave the object where it lies. The National Park Service visitor instruction is: “Leave the artifact where you found it.” If the find is in a U.S. National Park unit, alert a ranger rather than taking it home.
- Do not clean, polish, scrape, wash or chemically treat it. Soil, corrosion, attached material and the position of the object can provide evidence that is lost through cleaning or separation.
- Secure the immediate area without disturbing it. Mark the spot discreetly if that can be done without inserting stakes or moving soil. Keep people, pets and equipment away.
- Record and photograph before any authorized recovery. Take in-place photographs, then a wider photograph showing a stable landmark. Note the location, depth and ground conditions while they are fresh.
- Contact the responsible authority. Depending on the site, that may be a park ranger, land manager, Finds Liaison Officer, local archaeological service, State or Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, or another government heritage authority.
Do not post exact coordinates or recognizable site photographs publicly. Location data can expose vulnerable archaeological sites to looting; National Park Service guidance specifically cautions against posting artifact-location photographs on social media.
Why the findspot matters more than the object alone
An artifact removed from its layer loses information about date, use, trade, activity and association with other material. A single old-looking item may be recent, while a modest object in an undisturbed deposit can be archaeologically important. The position below or within the plough soil, the soil layers above it and nearby fragments may help an archaeologist interpret the site.

England and Wales’ Treasure Act Code of Practice recommends stopping and seeking archaeological assistance when a find is below plough soil or when several finds, unusual material or a concentration appear together. That principle is useful anywhere: an expanding patch of signals or mixed material is a reason to stop, not an invitation to excavate more.
What to record in the field
Write notes before weather, backfilling or foot traffic changes the scene. A phone is sufficient; a small notebook is optional. Record facts rather than guesses about age or value.
- Exact position: latitude and longitude if available, or another precise location method. The England and Wales code also recognizes What3Words.
- Depth and orientation: measure from the current ground surface and note whether the object was flat, upright, tilted or associated with a feature.
- Ground conditions: cultivated field, pasture, woodland, beach, river margin, disturbed fill, paving or another surface; describe soil color, texture, stones and visible layers.
- Associated material: nearby metal objects, pottery fragments, glass, brick, bone, charcoal, rubble or other pieces. Do not collect them merely to make a set.
- Site and land status: private property, public land, protected place, park, federal land, tribal land, shoreline or underwater location. Note the owner, tenant or site manager if known.
- Images: close views from several angles without moving the object, a scale placed only if it can be done without contact, and wider views with a landmark. Keep the original files and metadata.
- Search circumstances: date and time, detector settings if relevant, weather, whether the ground had recently been ploughed, and whether anyone else witnessed the discovery.
Do not publish the coordinates, distinctive landmarks or high-resolution location images while a report is pending. Send them privately to the authority that requests them.
Isolated object or archaeological deposit?
An isolated signal
If the object is alone, shallow and in recently disturbed ground, document it and ask the land manager or heritage service how to proceed. “Looks modern” is not a legal classification, and age can be difficult to judge in the field.

A concentration or layer
Multiple artifacts, a deep object, a compact layer, structural remains, unusual soil or fragments of pottery, glass, bone or metal indicate a possible archaeological deposit. Stop all nearby detecting and do not strip the surface to find the deposit’s edge. The authority may need the area protected, mapped or examined by qualified staff.
Possible human remains or cultural items
Bone cannot be reliably identified as human in the field. If remains may be human, stop activity in and around the discovery, keep others away and contact police, the land manager or the responsible heritage authority immediately. On U.S. federal or tribal lands, National Park Service guidance under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) requires immediate reporting of human remains or cultural items to the responsible official and stopping nearby activity until authorized to resume.
Reporting routes by jurisdiction
These examples show why country and land status must be established before you move anything. They are not a worldwide legal survey.

England and Wales: treasure and other finds
Potential treasure
GOV.UK guidance requires a potential treasure find to be reported to a local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days. The clock also applies when you only later realize that an object may qualify as treasure. Do not wait for a valuation, online identification or a buyer’s opinion before reporting.

Other archaeological or culturally interesting objects
Not every significant find is legally treasure. In England, the Portable Antiquities Scheme provides a reporting route for other historically or culturally interesting objects; in Wales, use Cymru PAS. Give the recorder the original location and context, not just photographs of a cleaned object.
Protected places and consent
The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 makes detecting in a protected place without specified written consent an offence and also addresses removal of archaeological or historical objects discovered by metal detector without consent. A landowner’s permission to enter or detect does not automatically authorize detecting on a protected monument or removal from it. Check the site’s legal status before searching.
Northern Ireland: a different legal route
The Department for Communities says anyone who finds archaeological objects, including treasure, should report and surrender them within 14 days. Northern Ireland is not covered by the England-and-Wales reporting route, so use the current departmental instructions and do not assume that a Finds Liaison Officer is the correct recipient.
United States: public, federal, tribal and private land
National Park Service land
Federal law protects archaeological sites and artifacts on federal lands, and National Park units prohibit digging, collecting and metal detecting. Leave the item where it is, photograph it with a landmark, note the location and alert a ranger. Do not backfill over an object if doing so would disturb it; ask the ranger how the area should be left safe.

Federal or tribal land and NAGPRA
For possible human remains or cultural items, report immediately to the responsible official and stop activity nearby. NAGPRA procedures can involve consultation, protection of the location and repatriation; the finder should not transport, trade or attempt private identification of the material.
State and private land
State, tribal, county and private-land rules differ. Ownership of the soil does not by itself answer whether an archaeological object can be removed, whether it must be reported or whether a burial law applies. Ask the landowner or agency for written permission and consult the relevant State or Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. If the land is leased, public, protected or subject to an easement, identify every applicable manager.
Wreck material and underwater finds
Material recovered from UK territorial waters, or brought into the UK from outside those waters, must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck under the separate wreck-reporting route. Wreck material from non-tidal waters is treated as a land find under other relevant legislation. Do not assume that a beach discovery, river find or object bearing marine growth follows the same procedure as a field find.

- Was detecting lawful at this location? Protected-site, park, federal, tribal and local restrictions may apply even when a landowner invited you.
- Was removal lawful? Archaeological deposits, burials, wreck material and protected monuments can have special rules.
- Is reporting or surrender required? England and Wales’ 14-day treasure rule and Northern Ireland’s 14-day reporting-and-surrender rule are examples of mandatory processes.
Until the competent authority confirms otherwise, keep the object in its original position. If it has already been moved, do not conceal that fact; record where and when it was moved, preserve all soil and associated material, and tell the authority exactly what happened.
Common mistakes that damage evidence or create legal problems
- Digging a larger “test” hole around an old coin.
- Rubbing corrosion off to reveal a date or mint mark.
- Separating a coin from a clump, pouch, box, textile or other attached material.
- Taking fragments as souvenirs or combining finds from different holes.
- Posting a precise location online before the site is protected.
- Assuming a detector club, landowner or online forum can replace the statutory reporting authority.
- Crossing from private ground onto a protected, public, federal or tribal site because the signal continues.
- Moving suspected human remains or cultural items for safekeeping without official instructions.
A practical report to prepare
When you call or write, provide a concise account:
- Your name and contact details, and whether you are the finder, landowner or witness.
- The country, region, exact land type and site manager.
- Date and time of discovery, coordinates or another precise location, depth and ground condition.
- What was visible in place, including concentrations, layers and associated material.
- Photographs showing the object in place and the wider setting.
- Whether anything was moved, cleaned, backfilled or removed, and by whom.
- Any immediate concern about human remains, burial, cultural items, public safety or active construction.
Ask the recipient for a case number or written instructions, the correct temporary storage method if recovery is authorized, and whether the site should be secured. Follow those instructions rather than transporting the find to a museum, dealer or private specialist on your own.
After the authority responds
Keep the original photographs, notes and detector log together. Do not alter file metadata or overwrite the first images. If officials authorize recovery, use their packaging and labeling instructions; do not add oil, tape, adhesive, desiccant or household cleaners unless specifically directed. Record every transfer of the object and retain receipts or acknowledgment of surrender.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOnce the authority confirms that no further action is required, ask whether the find may be returned, recorded in a public database, deposited with a museum or retained under local law. A responsible outcome can be documentation rather than possession: the archaeological information may be the most valuable part of the discovery.
