Leave the water, wash exposed skin promptly with soap and safe running water, and deal with any wound separately. Keep contaminated water out of your mouth, eyes, and open cuts. Most brief contact with intact skin does not automatically cause illness, but wounds, swallowed water, embedded debris, and new symptoms require more careful follow-up.

What should I do if I come into contact with sewage-contaminated water?

Use this order: stop the exposure, clean yourself, protect any wound, and watch for symptoms. Sewage-contaminated floodwater can contain infectious germs, chemicals, sharp debris, hazardous waste, and other contaminants, so do not assume that water that looks clear is safe.

  1. Get out of the water. Move to a clean area and avoid stepping back in. The safest protection is staying out of contaminated water.
  2. Wash exposed skin. Use soap and clean, safe water as soon as possible. Clean your hands before eating, drinking, or touching your face.
  3. Clean and cover wounds. Wash cuts, sores, or rashes thoroughly, then cover a clean wound with a waterproof bandage.
  4. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash it in hot water with detergent before wearing it again.
  5. Check the exposure route. Swallowed water, eye exposure, punctures, and open wounds change what you should do next.
  6. Get medical advice when warning signs appear. A clinician can assess infected wounds, punctures, retained debris, tetanus protection, or illness symptoms.

If soap or clean water is temporarily unavailable, CDC guidance lists alcohol-based wipes or hand sanitizer as a fallback for the exposed area. Use proper washing with soap and clean water when you can.

Does sewage water on intact skin automatically make you sick?

No. CDC disaster-cleanup guidance says that skin contact with floodwater by itself does not pose a serious health risk. That statement applies to contact with intact skin; it is not a guarantee that every exposure is harmless. Sewage water may also contain chemicals, hazardous waste, or objects that can injure you.

The practical response is prompt washing rather than panic. Do not diagnose an infection from contact alone, and do not assume that washing eliminates every possible risk. Continue to monitor yourself, especially if water entered your mouth, an existing wound, or your eyes.

How to wash your skin and hands

Exposed skin

Rinse away visible contamination and wash the affected skin with soap and clean water. Pay attention to hands, feet, legs, and any area where water or sludge contacted you. Avoid spreading contamination to your face, food, dishes, or other people while you are still dirty.

Hands after cleanup

Wash hands with soap and water after handling sewage, flood debris, contaminated clothing, or cleanup equipment. Do this before eating, drinking, preparing food, caring for someone else, or touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. If handwashing facilities are unavailable, use alcohol-based sanitizer until you can wash properly.

Contaminated clothing

Take off wet or soiled clothing and keep it away from clean items. Launder it with hot water and detergent before reuse. If the clothing has also been exposed to fuel or toxic chemicals, follow local hazardous-material instructions rather than treating it as ordinary laundry.

What if sewage water gets in a cut, sore, or rash?

An open wound or rash deserves more attention than intact-skin contact. CDC guidance says open wounds and rashes exposed to contaminated water can become infected, and recommends avoiding floodwater when a wound is open.

First aid for an exposed wound

  1. Move away from the contaminated water.
  2. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water.
  3. After cleaning, cover it with a waterproof bandage.
  4. Keep the dressing clean and dry, and avoid another exposure while the wound remains open.

Do not seal dirt, sludge, or an object inside a wound. If you cannot clean the wound completely, arrange medical assessment.

When a wound needs prompt or immediate care

  • Redness, swelling, warmth, or oozing develops.
  • Pain or soreness is increasing instead of improving.
  • There is drainage or a fever.
  • An object is embedded in the wound.
  • A dirty object caused a puncture.
  • The injury is deep, extensive, or in an area with a higher infection risk.

Seek immediate care for a wound that is becoming red, swollen, or oozing. Seek care as soon as possible for a puncture, embedded foreign object, increasing pain, drainage, or fever. A clinician can decide whether the wound needs professional cleaning, removal of debris, or other treatment.

Tetanus protection

Ask a health professional whether you need a tetanus booster after a puncture wound or a wound contaminated with feces, soil, or saliva. The decision depends on your vaccination history and the nature of the injury, so a single booster interval cannot be applied safely to everyone. Bring your vaccination record if you have it.

What if you swallowed sewage-contaminated water?

Avoid swallowing any more water and follow instructions from local health and drinking-water authorities. CDC identifies ingestion of contaminated floodwater as a route to diarrheal disease. Do not assume that drinking a large amount of clean water, taking an antibiotic, or arranging a test on your own will prevent illness; there is no universal testing or preventive-medication protocol for every exposure.

Contact a health professional if illness develops. EPA lists upset stomach, intestinal problems, headache, and other flu-like discomfort among early symptoms that can occur after contaminated floodwater exposure. These symptoms do not prove a sewage infection, but they are a reason to seek medical advice, particularly if they are severe, persistent, or accompanied by dehydration or a wound problem.

If authorities issue a drinking-water advisory, follow that local instruction. Water contaminated with fuel or toxic chemicals should not be used for drinking, bathing, or other household purposes; chemical contamination requires event-specific directions rather than ordinary disinfection advice.

What if contaminated water gets in your eye?

CDC worker guidance for handling human waste says to gently flush the eye with safe water. Do not rub the eye. Seek medical advice if irritation or other symptoms continue after flushing. This advice is for contaminated-water exposure; a suspected chemical splash, severe pain, vision change, or other eye emergency warrants urgent professional evaluation.

Which type of exposure is most concerning?

Exposure Main concern What to do
Brief contact with intact skin Usually low risk from the contact itself, but water may contain other hazards Leave the water and wash with soap and clean water
Open cut, sore, or rash Infection, especially if contamination remains or the wound is punctured Wash, cover with a waterproof bandage, avoid more exposure, and monitor for infection
Puncture or embedded debris Deep contamination, retained foreign material, and tetanus risk Get prompt professional assessment; do not dig out a deeply embedded object
Swallowed water Gastrointestinal illness and other exposure-related symptoms Avoid further ingestion, follow local water guidance, and seek care if symptoms develop
Eye exposure Irritation or injury Gently flush with safe water and seek advice if symptoms persist

When should I see a doctor after touching sewage water?

Touching contaminated water with intact skin, followed by prompt washing and no symptoms, does not automatically require a clinic visit. Arrange medical advice when the exposure involved an open wound, a puncture, an embedded object, swallowed water followed by illness, persistent eye irritation, or any symptom that concerns you.

Get urgent help for injury warning signs

  • A wound is rapidly becoming red, swollen, hot, or increasingly painful.
  • pus-like drainage, spreading redness, or fever appears.
  • A dirty object punctured the skin or debris remains embedded.
  • You cannot clean the wound adequately.

Seek medical advice for illness symptoms

Contact a clinician if you develop upset stomach, intestinal problems, headache, flu-like discomfort, or other new symptoms after exposure. Mention when the exposure occurred, whether water was swallowed, whether skin was broken, and whether the water may have contained chemicals or sewage. Do not wait for a diagnosis before asking about a worsening wound or significant illness.

How to avoid exposure during cleanup

Staying out of sewage-contaminated water is the safest option. If entering the area is unavoidable, CDC guidance names rubber boots, rubber gloves, and goggles. For disaster sewage cleanup, CDC also recommends covering cuts with a waterproof bandage. These items reduce contact; they do not make contaminated water safe or replace medical care.

  • Keep children and pets away from the water and saturated debris.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while working in a contaminated area.
  • Cover every cut or sore before cleanup.
  • Wash hands after removing gloves and after handling contaminated materials.
  • Follow local emergency, wastewater, and drinking-water instructions for the specific spill.

“The best way to protect yourself is to stay out of the water.” — CDC, Safety Guidelines: Floodwater

“Always avoid contact with any floodwater that may be contaminated with sewage— it can make you sick!” — CDC, Guidelines for Septic and Onsite Wastewater Systems

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming clear water is clean: Sewage, chemicals, and sharp debris may not be visible.
  • Ignoring a small cut: Even a minor wound should be washed, covered, and watched after exposure.
  • Using contaminated water to bathe: Water containing fuel or toxic chemicals should not be used for bathing or other household purposes.
  • Self-prescribing antibiotics: Exposure alone does not establish an infection or indicate a specific medicine.
  • Guessing about tetanus: Have a professional compare the injury with your vaccination record.
  • Returning to the water after washing: Repeated exposure increases contamination and injury opportunities.

A simple decision checklist

  1. Was your skin intact? Wash promptly and monitor for symptoms.
  2. Was there a cut, sore, rash, puncture, or embedded object? Clean and cover it; obtain professional assessment when the injury is punctured, contaminated, worsening, or difficult to clean.
  3. Did you swallow water? Avoid more exposure, follow local water-safety advice, and seek care if illness appears.
  4. Did water enter an eye? Flush gently with safe water and seek advice if irritation continues.
  5. Were chemicals, fuel, or hazardous waste involved? Follow local emergency or hazardous-material instructions instead of relying on ordinary floodwater cleanup advice.
  6. Are symptoms worsening? Contact a health professional promptly.

This is general U.S. public-health guidance, not a diagnosis. Local health departments and drinking-water authorities may issue instructions specific to the spill, flood, wastewater system, or chemicals involved.
