What to Do After an Unauthenticated WordPress RCE: A Site Owner’s Incident-Response Checklist

What should you do first after a suspected WordPress RCE? Treat it as a possible full-site compromise: document what you see, contact your hosting provider, contain the site using the host’s safe procedure, preserve a snapshot and logs, and only then choose restoration or cleanup. Do not assume that deleting one suspicious file or running a scanner proves the attacker is gone.

An “unauthenticated remote-code-execution” finding describes a potentially serious entry point, but this title does not identify the vulnerable plugin, theme, WordPress version, server component, CVE, or patch. The exact advisory and installed version must be established before you can claim that a particular update fixes the incident.

Why an unauthenticated RCE requires an incident response

Unauthenticated RCE means code may have been executed without a normal WordPress login. If that occurred, an attacker could have changed files, created accounts, read configuration data, altered the database, or used the hosting account to reach other resources. The visible symptom may be small while the compromise is broader.

This is an owner-facing response plan, not an exploit walkthrough. Avoid testing a suspected flaw against a live site unless a qualified responder and the host have agreed on a safe method. Exploit details, affected versions, and the correct patch depend on the specific component and advisory.

WordPress documentation puts the first actionable step plainly: “The first actionable step you should take post-compromise is documentation.” Record facts before cleanup changes the evidence. See WordPress’s “FAQ My site was hacked” guidance.

1. Document the incident before changing anything

Create an incident note in a location that is not dependent on the compromised WordPress installation. Record observations, times, decisions and the person who made each change.

  • Write the exact symptoms: defaced pages, redirects, spam, new administrator accounts, unfamiliar files, changed settings, browser warnings, email alerts or unexplained traffic.
  • Capture affected URLs, screenshots, error messages and the first time each symptom was observed. Include the timezone and whether the time is estimated.
  • List recent plugin, theme, WordPress core, server, DNS and hosting changes, including who made them.
  • Record the domain, hosting plan, server or container details, connected sites, staging environments, CDN, DNS provider and any third-party services with access.
  • Note every response action already taken: password changes, plugin deactivation, restores, scans, file deletion or host-side isolation.
  • Preserve relevant email notifications, support tickets, access alerts and payment or order records that could show business impact.

Keep assumptions separate from facts. “The homepage redirected at 14:20 UTC” is an observation; “the plugin caused it” is a hypothesis. This record gives your host or responder a reliable baseline and prevents well-intentioned actions from being mistaken for attacker activity.

2. Contact the hosting provider and coordinate containment

Call or open an urgent ticket with the host and describe the event as a suspected unauthenticated remote-code-execution compromise. Contact the host early, even if you plan to hire a specialist. The host may be able to determine whether the event is a hack, an outage or a wider account problem.

Ask the host to explain its safe containment procedure. Depending on the service, that may involve restricting public access, isolating the account, disabling a vulnerable component, taking a provider-side snapshot or moving the site to a quarantine environment. Do not apply generic server commands from an unrelated tutorial: the safe action depends on the hosting architecture and the scope of the incident.

Ask these specific questions:

  • Can you preserve web-server, PHP, control-panel, SSH/SFTP and database-access logs, and for what time range?
  • Can you take an incident snapshot before cleanup, and how can I obtain an unaltered copy?
  • Does your scan cover the whole hosting account, databases and scheduled jobs, or only the WordPress document root?
  • Do you see suspicious activity on other domains, users or services sharing this account or server?
  • What backups exist, what dates do they cover, and how long will a copy or restore take?
  • Who is the incident contact while the site is restricted, and how will you approve later restoration?

Shared hosting changes the risk calculation. A compromise can affect more than one site or account, so ask the provider to check account-wide and server-side scope. WordPress explains hosting models and the support features some WordPress-focused providers offer in its hosting documentation.

3. Preserve evidence, snapshots and backups

After containment, preserve evidence before destructive eradication. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) places evidence preservation between containment and eradication in its Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks. For a small site, that means coordinating with the host or responder rather than improvising forensic procedures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make an incident snapshot

When it is safe and practical, preserve a copy of the current files, database and relevant logs before removing malware. An infected snapshot is not a backup for production, but it can help a qualified responder identify persistence, stolen accounts and the initial access path. Label it clearly as potentially compromised and restrict access to it.

Check backup dates and integrity

List every available backup and its creation date. Identify the newest copy believed to predate the first suspicious activity, then verify that it includes both the database and uploaded files. WordPress recommends backing up both; its backup guidance also notes that obtaining a host-held backup may take time.

Do not restore a backup merely because it is convenient. A backup created after the attacker entered may contain the same web shell, altered user account or malicious database record. Keep at least one separate, off-site copy; a local external drive can be one destination, but a single drive connected to the same environment is not a sufficient sole backup.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

4. Decide between clean restoration, cleanup or rebuild

The right path depends on evidence, capability and how much data can be lost. Restoration is not automatically safer than investigation, and manual cleanup is not automatically cheaper than rebuilding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation More defensible next step Why
A verified, known-clean backup predates the compromise; the host can isolate the site; and you understand what content or orders would be lost. Coordinate a clean restore, then patch and verify before reopening. You have a defined recovery point, but must still close the entry path and check credentials.
No trustworthy backup, or the date of compromise is unknown. Use a qualified responder to investigate and clean, or rebuild from known-good software and carefully retained data. Restoring an uncertain copy can reintroduce the foothold.
You cannot inspect files, database records, logs and hosting access confidently. Escalate to a WordPress security professional and keep the host involved. RCE response requires more than removing the visible symptom.
The host reports other accounts or server resources are involved. Follow the host’s broader containment and recovery plan before treating the WordPress site as isolated. The boundary of the incident may be larger than one installation.

WordPress says that cleanup depends on the symptoms and the owner’s technical ability. A responder may replace WordPress core files with clean copies, update components and inspect the database, uploads, scheduled tasks and access records. CISA’s general sequence is to preserve evidence, eradicate the cause, rebuild affected systems from clean sources where appropriate and continue detection afterward. Translate that organizational guidance to your hosting arrangement with the host or responder.

A scanner finding or one deleted file is not proof that an RCE foothold is gone. Persistent access can live in a less obvious plugin, theme, upload, database option, scheduled task or stolen credential.

5. Reset every credential and invalidate sessions

Reset access only in coordination with the containment and cleanup plan. A password changed while malware remains can be captured and used again, so WordPress recommends changing passwords again after the site is clean.

  1. Reset WordPress administrator passwords and review every user account, role and email address. Remove accounts that are unauthorized, and confirm that legitimate users still need their access.
  2. Reset the hosting control-panel password and any separate account-level security questions, API keys or recovery methods.
  3. Reset FTP, SFTP, SSH and deployment credentials. Replace keys or tokens rather than merely changing a password when the service supports key rotation.
  4. Change database credentials and update the connection values in wp-config.php through the host’s approved process.
  5. Replace WordPress authentication keys and salts in wp-config.php to invalidate existing login sessions. Coordinate this with the person performing the cleanup so you do not disrupt forensic access unexpectedly.
  6. Rotate secrets for payment, email, analytics, CDN, DNS, backup and other integrations that could expose the site or be used to regain access.
  7. Ask every person and contractor with access to reset their credentials and enable multifactor authentication where the service provides it.

The WordPress.com support guide, last reviewed October 2, 2026, advises resetting the account password, WordPress administrator password and other site-user passwords. That managed-service advice does not replace resets for a self-hosted control panel, server, database or file-transfer account.

6. Identify the entry point, then patch and harden

Once the site is in a known-clean state or the rebuild plan is established, update WordPress core, plugins, themes and relevant server components. The update must address the actual vulnerable component identified by its official advisory; updating an unrelated plugin does not remediate an RCE.

Because no CVE, component name or affected version is specified here, do not infer a patch from the phrase “unauthenticated RCE.” Record the installed version, locate the vendor or official WordPress security advisory, check the affected-version range and apply the documented fixed release. If a component is abandoned or cannot be updated safely, remove it and replace its function with a maintained alternative after testing.

Use WordPress hardening guidance as a planning reference. Review least-privilege accounts, file and directory permissions, unused plugins and themes, administrator access, update procedures, backups, logging and multifactor authentication. Ask the host how it handles server patching, account isolation, malware response and recovery testing.

Do not harden by deleting logs or overwriting the snapshot. Keep the incident record and preserved evidence under restricted access while normal operations resume.

  • The public site serves the expected pages over HTTPS without redirects, injected links or unexpected downloads.
  • Administrator login works with the new credentials, and only expected users and roles remain.
  • Posts, media, orders, forms, comments and other business data are present and correct for the chosen recovery point.
  • Contact forms, transactional email, payment processing, cron jobs, APIs and webhooks operate as expected.
  • WordPress, plugins, themes and server components report the intended versions.
  • The host has completed its agreed scan and has no unresolved account-wide or server-side findings.

Ask the host or responder to monitor for renewed file changes, new accounts, suspicious requests and outbound mail. CISA recommends continuing detection after eradication because an attacker may try to re-enter or use another access method. Define who reviews alerts and how quickly they will act during the first days after restoration.

Recovery Mode is not an RCE cleanup tool

WordPress Recovery Mode is designed to help an administrator access a site affected by certain fatal PHP errors. It can help troubleshoot a broken plugin or theme, but it does not establish that a site is uncompromised, preserve forensic evidence or remove an attacker’s persistence. Follow the scope described in the Recovery Mode documentation; use incident-response procedures for suspected compromise.

When to bring in professional help

Escalate promptly when the compromise involves payment or personal data, the host reports shared-account activity, the date of entry is unknown, logs are unavailable, the site repeatedly reinfects, or you cannot examine the server and database. A qualified WordPress incident responder can work with the host on evidence preservation, scope analysis, clean rebuilding and verification. WordPress’s hacked-site guidance recognizes professional response as an option when symptoms or technical ability make self-cleanup unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If personal information, credentials or regulated data may have been accessed, involve appropriate legal, privacy or regulatory advisers. Notification duties depend on the data, jurisdiction and facts established during the investigation; they cannot be determined from the RCE label alone.

Keep an incident-ready recovery plan

After recovery, turn the incident record into a repeatable plan. Schedule tested backups of both files and the database, retain an off-site copy, document who can contact the host, and record where logs and recovery credentials are managed. Test that a backup can actually be restored to an isolated environment. Keep an inventory of WordPress versions, plugins, themes, integrations and people with access so a future alert can be scoped quickly.

The goal is not simply to make the homepage look normal. It is to establish a clean state, close the real entry path, rotate exposed access, verify the functions that matter to your site and continue watching for re-entry.
