What to Do After an AI Agent Escapes Its Sandbox

Treat an AI-agent sandbox escape as a security incident, not a routine application error. Pause the agent and automated retries, isolate the workload and host, revoke every credential it could reach, preserve volatile evidence, determine whether the host or Kubernetes control plane was accessed, then rebuild from trusted artifacts. Keep an independent management and logging path throughout the response.

Act in the first minutes

An escape can expose the host kernel, container runtime, mounted files, cloud metadata, Kubernetes credentials, neighboring workloads, shared storage and outbound services. The fact that the agent did not report using a capability does not prove that capability was unreachable or unused.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Pause the agent and stop retries. Disable the agent run, queue consumers, scheduled jobs and automation that could recreate the workload or continue making tool calls. Preserve the prompts, tool calls and model outputs before deleting them.
  2. Contain the workload. Isolate the affected container, virtual machine or node from the internet, internal networks, shared volumes, registries, source-control systems, cloud metadata endpoints and Kubernetes control-plane paths. Use network and identity controls outside the suspected workload.
  3. Preserve a trusted management path. Keep an out-of-band administrative channel and logging destination that the workload cannot modify. Do not rely on logs written only inside the compromised host or container.
  4. Notify the incident-response lead. Bring in platform, cloud, identity, security, legal/privacy and affected service owners. Record who made each containment decision and the UTC time.
  5. Protect other systems. Temporarily suspend integrations, webhooks, deployment jobs, registry publishing and data exports that could receive poisoned artifacts or attacker-controlled changes.

NIST’s incident-response guidance describes preparation; detection and analysis; containment, eradication and recovery; and post-incident activity as a lifecycle. Its 2025 revision notes that most incidents require some form of containment and recommends actions such as quarantining malware, moving a compromised endpoint to an isolated remediation network or halting an infected container.

Containment decisions and their trade-offs

Containment should stop additional access without destroying the evidence needed to understand what happened. Select the narrowest action that reliably blocks the suspected path, then escalate if telemetry shows continued activity.

Suspected exposure Immediate boundary What to preserve
Agent process or container only Pause the process, remove network and tool access, and quarantine the image and workload identity. Process state, container logs, image digest, prompts, tool calls and outbound destinations.
Host filesystem, kernel or runtime socket Quarantine the host from all networks and scheduling systems; prevent new workloads from landing on it. Host and container logs, memory where lawful and safe, filesystem state, runtime events and disk or cloud-volume snapshots.
Cloud metadata or workload identity Block metadata access and revoke the associated instance, workload or short-lived tokens. Cloud audit events, token issuance and use records, DNS and flow logs.
Kubernetes API or service account Revoke the service-account token, restrict API paths and isolate the namespace, node or cluster segment. Kubernetes audit logs, admission events, object changes, controller activity and token-use records.
Shared volumes, registries or source control Make affected repositories, registries and volumes read-only or quarantine them; suspend publishing and deployment. Access logs, object versions, image manifests and digests, commits, workflow changes and webhook deliveries.

Revoke and rotate every reachable credential

Build an inventory from the agent’s environment, mounts, workload identity, tool configuration, network policy and host access. Treat each reachable secret as compromised until logs prove otherwise. Rotate secrets even when the agent never mentioned them; an attacker or process may have read them silently.

  • Cloud access keys, role credentials and short-lived workload or instance-identity tokens.
  • Kubernetes service-account tokens, client certificates and kubeconfig material.
  • Source-control personal, deploy and automation tokens, SSH keys and signing keys.
  • Package-registry credentials, image-publishing tokens and artifact-repository passwords.
  • API keys for external services, messaging systems and observability platforms.
  • Database usernames, passwords, connection strings and certificates.
  • SSH keys, host credentials and secrets mounted as files or injected through environment variables.

Revoke first, then issue replacements with narrower scopes, shorter lifetimes and no ambient access. Update dependent workloads through a controlled deployment rather than editing an untrusted host. Review cloud, Kubernetes, source-control, CI/CD, registry and identity-provider audit logs for use during the entire exposure window, including activity after the first suspected escape.

Preserve evidence before cleanup

Erasing the workload immediately can remove the only record of how the escape occurred. Where doing so is safe, lawful and consistent with your incident plan, capture volatile evidence before termination or rebuilding.

Capture volatile state

  • Memory images and process lists from the host and affected workload.
  • Open files, sockets, network connections, loaded modules and child processes.
  • Container-runtime events, namespace details, mounts, capabilities and device access.
  • Current environment variables, mounted secrets and temporary files.

Export durable records

  • Container, host, runtime, authentication and system logs.
  • Kubernetes audit logs and object-change history.
  • Cloud audit events, DNS queries, network-flow records and firewall decisions.
  • Filesystem and image-layer state, registry pulls, image manifests and digests.
  • Shell history, prompts, tool calls, model outputs and outbound destinations.
  • Source-control commits, CI/CD runs, workflow edits, webhook deliveries and artifact downloads.

Record UTC timestamps and the collection method. Preserve originals read-only, calculate hashes for exported artifacts and maintain chain-of-custody notes. CISA recommends system and memory capture, relevant logs and indicators, preservation of volatile evidence and cloud-volume snapshots. NIST also lists evidence preservation as a factor when selecting containment strategies.

Determine whether the host or Kubernetes was reached

Start a timeline at the first anomalous tool call, process, network connection or file access and continue through isolation. Correlate agent telemetry with host, cloud and Kubernetes records; no single log source is sufficient.

Indicators of host access

  • Processes or files outside the container’s expected namespaces, especially host process IDs, host paths or privileged device access.
  • Reads or writes through a container-runtime socket, host-mounted directories or sensitive device files.
  • Unexpected kernel, namespace, capability or security-policy events.
  • New local users, SSH keys, authorized-key changes, cron entries, systemd units, startup scripts or modified authentication files.
  • Outbound connections from the node to destinations not required by the workload, including command-and-control infrastructure or data-transfer endpoints.

Indicators of Kubernetes API access

  • Service-account token use from an unexpected source address, process or time.
  • Kubernetes audit events for list, get, create, update, patch, delete, exec, attach or port-forward operations outside the agent’s normal workflow.
  • New or modified pods, deployments, daemon sets, jobs, secrets, config maps, role bindings, cluster-role bindings, admission settings or webhooks.
  • Requests involving namespaces, nodes or resources outside the workload’s assigned scope.
  • Controller, scheduler or admission activity that follows an unusual API request or creates workloads with elevated privileges.

Also check for access to neighboring pods, shared volumes, queues, databases, registries and source-control systems. The Kubernetes Agent Sandbox threat model identifies container escape, cross-tenant network attack and Kubernetes API abuse as critical threats, so an apparently contained pod does not define the full scope.

Find persistence and poisoned artifacts

Assume the agent could have changed a future execution path. Search for persistence on the host, in images, in orchestration objects and in developer or delivery systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • New users, keys, scheduled tasks, services, startup scripts and shell profiles.
  • Modified container images, base layers, package-lock files, build scripts and dependency sources.
  • Altered CI workflows, deployment manifests, policy files, webhooks, runners and release credentials.
  • Unexpected registry tags, image pushes, artifact replacements and unsigned or digest-mismatched images.
  • Backdoors, altered binaries, hidden data exports and files designed to be consumed by later jobs.

Quarantine suspect images and retain their immutable digests. Treat artifacts produced or downloaded during the exposure window as untrusted until independently rebuilt or verified.

Eradicate the compromise and recover safely

Terminate persistence, not just the visible process

After evidence collection and approval, terminate compromised workloads, revoke their identities and remove persistence discovered in hosts, orchestration objects, repositories, registries and delivery systems. Continue monitoring the isolated environment for callbacks or recreated resources.

Replace vulnerable components

Identify the condition that enabled the escape: an image or dependency flaw, runtime or kernel vulnerability, excessive capability, exposed socket, unsafe mount, permissive network rule, overprivileged service account or tool integration. Patch or replace the image, runtime, kernel, policy or integration. NIST SP 800-190 provides a container-security baseline for identifying and reducing container risks.

Rebuild from trusted inputs

Rebuild the host and workloads from reproducible, verified artifacts rather than trying to “clean” an untrusted system in place. Validate image provenance, dependency integrity, configuration and policy before deployment. Restore data only after checking integrity and confirming that backups were not modified during the incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return in a quarantine environment

Bring services back gradually with least-privilege identities, no ambient credentials, explicit egress allowlists, protected logging and human approval for high-impact tools. Keep the replacement workload separate from the original host and artifacts until monitoring shows that expected behavior is stable.

Communications, legal review and documentation

Maintain a single incident timeline and decision log. Notify the incident-response lead, platform and cloud owners, legal/privacy counsel and affected service owners. Whether notification is required depends on the data involved, jurisdictions, contracts and evidence; the fact that an escape occurred does not by itself determine a reporting obligation.

Document the initial access, escape technique if known, identities exposed, systems contacted, data accessed or exported, containment times, evidence collected, eradication actions and recovery approvals. Preserve the records needed for regulators, customers, insurers or contractual partners without distributing sensitive forensic material beyond those who need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent a repeat escape

Enforce boundaries outside the agent

Do not ask the model to police its own privileges. Enforce filesystem, process, network, identity and tool permissions in the kernel, hypervisor or container runtime. Keep sensitive networks and credentials separate from untrusted execution, and make egress destinations and tool arguments policy-controlled by an independent service.

Use stronger isolation where risk warrants it

For workloads that process untrusted code or can trigger consequential actions, evaluate strongly isolated runtimes such as gVisor or Kata Containers. The appropriate choice depends on compatibility, performance, operational maturity and the sensitivity of neighboring workloads; the goal is to reduce the blast radius if a container boundary fails.

Remove unnecessary authority

  • Issue short-lived, narrowly scoped identities and mount no secret that the task does not require.
  • Disable privileged mode, unnecessary Linux capabilities, host networking, host PID or IPC namespaces, device access and runtime-socket mounts.
  • Separate build, test and production networks and registries.
  • Require human approval for deletion, publication, credential changes, production deployment and external data transfer.
  • Centralize tamper-resistant logs and alert on unusual API calls, token use, image pushes, egress and privilege changes.

Exercise the response

Test that operators can pause the agent, isolate a node, revoke tokens, preserve memory and logs, identify Kubernetes API activity and rebuild from trusted artifacts. Record the time required for each action and close gaps while the incident is still fresh.

Operational checklist

  • Agent paused; automated retries and queues halted.
  • Workload and host isolated from internet, internal networks, metadata, registries, source control and Kubernetes control-plane paths.
  • Independent management and protected logging preserved.
  • All reachable credentials inventoried, revoked, rotated and checked in audit logs.
  • Volatile memory, process state, logs, images, prompts, tool calls and network records preserved where safe.
  • Host, runtime, Kubernetes API, neighboring workloads, shared state and outbound services assessed.
  • Persistence, modified images, workflows, webhooks and poisoned artifacts quarantined.
  • Vulnerable components patched or replaced; hosts and workloads rebuilt from trusted artifacts.
  • Recovery uses least privilege, restricted egress, protected logging and human approval.
  • Timeline, decision log, legal review and post-incident improvements completed.
