What to Do After a Skateboard Crash: First Aid and When to Seek Emergency Care

After a skateboard crash, first make sure the scene is safe, then check whether the person responds, is breathing normally, and has life-threatening bleeding. Call your local emergency number for an unresponsive person, abnormal breathing, severe bleeding, or another life-threatening condition. If a head, neck, or spinal injury is possible, do not ask them to move.

What to do in the first few minutes

  1. Check for danger. Look for traffic, moving skateboards, broken glass, or other hazards. Do not put yourself at risk while helping.
  2. Check responsiveness and breathing. See whether the person responds and is breathing normally. Gasping is not normal breathing. Call your local emergency number if they are unresponsive, not fully awake, not breathing normally, have life-threatening bleeding, or show another obvious life-threatening condition.
  3. Do not move them if a head, neck, or spinal injury is possible. Keep them in the position found and monitor their breathing and responsiveness. The American Red Cross advises: “Do not ask the person to move if you suspect a head, neck or spinal injury.” American Red Cross first-aid steps.
  4. Give only care within your training. If CPR is needed, follow your training and the emergency dispatcher’s instructions. Do not remove a helmet unless CPR is needed.
  5. Consider the whole crash. Severe pain, multiple injuries, inability to move safely, or possible head, neck, spine, or pelvis injury calls for urgent help even if a scrape or bruise looks more obvious.

When a head injury needs emergency care

After a blow or jolt to the head, call your local emergency number for any of these warning signs. The NHS lists the signs below; its emergency number is 999 in the UK, so use the equivalent route where you are.

  • The person was knocked out and has not woken, or cannot stay awake.
  • They have a seizure, new weakness or numbness, or difficulty walking, balancing, understanding, speaking, or writing.
  • They have vision or hearing problems, clear fluid from the ears or nose, bleeding from an ear, or bruising behind an ear.
  • The impact was high speed, there is a dent in the head, an object is lodged in a wound, or there is a major change in behavior.

The NHS page Head injury and concussion, last reviewed 29 May 2025, advises urgent medical help for other concerning symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, or head injury while taking blood-thinning medicine, having a blood-thinning condition, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In the UK, contact NHS 111 for urgent advice when emergency signs are absent; elsewhere, use your local urgent-care or medical-advice service. Do not drive yourself to hospital after a head injury if you have been told to attend A&E.

Suspected concussion: stop skating and get assessed

Concussion can follow a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body. It can be difficult to recognize, and symptoms may not appear immediately. Remove the person from skating and arrange assessment by a healthcare professional rather than trying to judge the injury’s severity yourself. The American Red Cross advises watching for deterioration such as altered behavior, vomiting, persistent headache, vision changes, or becoming unresponsive; call emergency services if that happens. See its head injury and concussion guidance.

When home monitoring may be appropriate after a minor head injury

Home care is appropriate only when the injury is considered minor and no emergency warning signs are present. NHS guidance says an adult should stay with the person for at least the first 24 hours. Rest is sensible, but the person does not need to stay awake solely because they are tired. A wrapped ice pack or frozen peas can be applied for short periods.

Do not skate while symptomatic; if concussion is suspected, wait for professional clearance before returning.

Prepare for minor injuries, not emergencies

A basic first-aid kit can help with minor scrapes and small wounds. It is not a substitute for emergency care, and it does not treat suspected concussion, fracture, spinal injury, or serious bleeding. The American Red Cross first-aid training information also covers first aid, CPR, and AED training.
