If a shark sighting closes a beach, leave the affected water immediately and stay out until the responsible lifeguard, park service or ocean-safety authority officially reopens it. Do not rely on the shark disappearing, a personal estimate of elapsed time or advice from another beachgoer. Follow posted signs, flags, announcements and staff directions; report what you saw through the local channel; and call emergency services if anyone is injured or in immediate danger.
A closure normally applies to the designated swimming or ocean-activity area. The dry-sand portion of a beach may remain open, but only local signs and officials can tell you which areas are restricted.

What to do immediately
- Exit the water. Swim calmly but promptly toward shore. Once on land, do not re-enter a posted restricted area, even if the shark is no longer visible.
- Follow the person in charge. Obey lifeguards, ocean-safety officers, park rangers, warning flags, loudspeaker announcements and signs. The National Park Service’s Cape Cod National Seashore Shark Smart guidance says: “Follow all signage and flag warnings at beaches and instructions of the lifeguards.”
- Account for your group. Make sure children, older adults and anyone using flotation equipment are out of the affected water. Help only when doing so does not put you back in danger.
- Move beyond the restricted boundary. A beach closure can cover a swimming zone, a surf break, a harbor entrance or another defined section rather than every meter of shoreline. Stay on the permitted side of barriers and signs.
- Report the sighting. Tell a lifeguard or ocean-safety employee what you saw, where, when and in which direction the animal moved. If no staff member is present, use the local authority’s designated reporting method.
Hawaii Ocean Safety’s warning guidance states: “Do not enter the water in areas where signs are posted, and obey all warnings to clear out of the water when a shark is sighted.” That instruction applies even when other people remain on the beach or the animal cannot be seen from shore.

When a lifeguard or ocean-safety officer is present
Notify the nearest official as soon as you are safely out. Give practical details: the approximate time, exact beach access or landmark, distance from shore, whether the shark was inside the marked swimming area, its direction of travel and whether anyone was bitten or knocked from a board. Do not chase the animal for a closer look or remain in the water to gather evidence.

When no lifeguard is present
Use the reporting route named on local signs, the beach authority’s website or a posted closure notice. Cape Cod National Seashore directs visitors to Sharktivity and ranger stations for shark information and reports. Procedures differ elsewhere, so do not assume that a report made to one county, park or state system reaches another jurisdiction.
When to call emergency services
Call the local emergency number for an active emergency: a bite, severe bleeding, a missing swimmer, a person in distress or an immediate threat to people. Hawaii Ocean Safety advises notifying ocean-safety personnel or calling 911 when a shark is seen or encountered. For a non-emergency sighting with no immediate danger, use the specified local reporting channel instead of tying up emergency dispatch.

What a closure does—and does not—mean
A sighting-related closure is an instruction to stay out of the affected water or stop the named ocean activity. It is not a signal to wait until the shark surfaces again, and it is not permission to enter a nearby section that appears quiet. Officials use the closure to create time and distance for an assessment.

There is no universal reopening timer
Do not apply a one-hour or two-hour rule from another beach to your own location. Reopening depends on local policy, where the shark was seen, time since the last observation, additional sightings and whether the responsible authority has reassessed conditions and issued a notice.
| Location and notice | Procedure described by the authority | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway National Recreation Area | A closure lasts one hour after the last shark sighting. | This is a Gateway rule, not a general beach standard. |
| Nantucket | One hour after the last observation when the shark is outside the swimming area; two hours when it is inside. | The location of the shark changes the waiting period under this local guidance. |
| Hanalei Bay, Kaua‘i County, Aug. 31, 2026 | The county advised against swimming and other ocean activities, posted warning signs, planned reassessment the following morning and said the beach would reopen if there were no other sightings. | This was an incident-specific notice, not a standing countywide policy. |
These examples show why an elapsed-time estimate is not enough. Even when a nominal period has passed, people should wait for the official all-clear. A later reassessment may extend a closure after another sighting or because conditions prevent a reliable check.

How to know when it is safe to return
- Look for an explicit reopening notice. Check the beach entrance, official social channel, ranger station, lifeguard tower or local alert system named by the authority.
- Confirm the geographic scope. An announcement may reopen one swimming area while another remains closed. Read the location and activity covered by the notice.
- Check the time and date. A notice from an earlier day may not apply to current conditions, especially after overnight or morning reassessment.
- Ask staff if wording is unclear. If flags, signs and verbal instructions conflict, remain out of the water until an official clarifies them.
- Keep following ordinary warnings. Reopening ends the specific closure under that authority’s procedure; it does not promise risk-free ocean conditions.
What to do while waiting on shore
Stay clear of the affected water
Do not wade, paddle, surf, snorkel, fish from the restricted edge or launch a watercraft unless officials specifically say that activity is allowed. A shark can move beyond the spot where it was first observed, and a quiet surface does not prove that the animal has left.

Keep children and pets away from the shoreline
Young children may treat a closure as a game or misunderstand a flag. Keep them within sight and away from the waterline if officials have expanded the exclusion area. Follow any separate instructions for dogs or other animals.
Best Value
Do not interfere with responders
Give lifeguards, rangers and emergency crews room to work. Avoid crowding a sighting location, spreading an unverified reopening message or encouraging others to cross a barrier. Share only the official notice and the facts you personally observed.
If someone is bitten or in immediate danger
Activate emergency help first. Call the local emergency number, alert a lifeguard and direct someone to meet responders at the nearest access point. Apply firm, direct pressure to severe bleeding with a clean cloth or dressing if available, while following dispatcher instructions. Do not return to the water to retrieve a person unless trained rescuers direct you and the scene is declared safe. A closure remains in force while rescue and medical operations continue.
Risk-reduction habits after reopening
Once officials reopen the area, ordinary precautions still matter. General guidance includes swimming near shore, staying with other people, avoiding darkness and twilight, and not entering the water with a bleeding wound. These measures reduce exposure; they do not replace a closure or guarantee safety.
- Choose a beach with staffed lifeguards when possible and remain inside the marked swimming area.
- Use the buddy system rather than swimming alone.
- Avoid entering at night, during dawn or dusk, or in conditions that make it difficult to see other people and marine life.
- Leave the water if officials raise a shark-sighting flag or announce a new observation.
- Do not feed wildlife or throw food scraps into the water.
NOAA characterizes the relative risk of a shark attack as “very small,” but that wording is not a promise about a particular beach, day or person. NOAA’s cited material does not provide a specific probability or attack statistic to apply to your decision.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it is unsafe or unreliable | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Going back when the shark is no longer visible | Visibility does not establish that the animal has left the area. | Wait for the authority’s reopening notice. |
| Starting your own countdown | Closures vary by jurisdiction and by whether the shark was inside the swimming zone. | Follow the current local procedure and reassessment. |
| Assuming the whole beach is closed—or that none of it is | The restricted area may be a defined water zone, while some dry-sand areas remain open. | Read the exact boundary and ask staff. |
| Using a non-emergency channel during an active rescue | Delayed dispatch can cost critical time. | Call emergency services for injury, distress or immediate danger. |
| Relying on a social-media rumor | Older or incomplete posts can conflict with current signs. | Verify through lifeguards, rangers or the authority named in the notice. |
A practical decision checklist
- Am I currently in the water or inside a posted restricted zone? If yes, exit now.
- Which official is directing this closure: lifeguard, ranger, ocean-safety officer or park authority?
- Have I reported the sighting through the named local route?
- Is anyone injured, missing or in immediate danger? If yes, call emergency services.
- What exact area and activities does the notice cover?
- Has the authority issued a dated reopening message, rather than merely allowing time to pass?
- After reopening, can I stay near shore, with a group, in daylight and without entering with a bleeding wound?
The bottom line for beachgoers
Treat a shark-sighting closure as a binding water restriction. Get out, follow the local authority, report useful details and wait for an official reopening. Gateway’s one-hour rule, Nantucket’s one- or two-hour distinction and Kaua‘i County’s next-morning reassessment demonstrate local variation, not a timer to copy. An official reopening means the authority has completed its procedure; it does not make open water risk-free.
