Wash any bite, scratch or potentially exposed area immediately with soap and water, then seek urgent medical assessment and contact your local or state health department. Do not wait for symptoms or for an animal test. Rabies can usually be prevented when post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) starts before symptoms, but symptomatic rabies is nearly always fatal. Whether you need PEP depends on the contact, animal species, local epidemiology, whether the animal can be observed or tested, and your vaccination and immune history.
Do these things first
- Clean the wound now. Flush and wash every bite, scratch or other potentially exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. If available, CDC says a virucidal irrigant such as povidone-iodine solution may be used after washing. Do not delay care while trying to find a product. Wound cleaning is first aid, not a substitute for professional assessment or indicated PEP. See CDC’s PEP guidance.
- Arrange urgent assessment. Contact a clinician and your local or state public-health department promptly. Officials evaluate the animal, the route of contact, the wound, your location and vaccination history. CDC advises contacting the health department immediately after exposure; its public guidance is at Rabies Prevention and Control.
- Do not manage the animal yourself. Do not capture, kill, handle or arrange a test for the animal independently. Animal control, veterinarians and public-health authorities coordinate safe observation or laboratory testing.
- Go to emergency care for symptoms. If you develop illness compatible with rabies, seek emergency medical care immediately. PEP is preventive before symptoms; once clinical disease develops, survival is exceptionally rare.
In the United States, roughly 100,000 people receive rabies PEP after a potential exposure each year, while fewer than 10 human rabies cases are reported annually. Those figures are U.S.-specific, not global rates.

What is considered a possible exposure?
Rabies virus is transmitted when saliva or other infectious material from an infected mammal reaches broken skin or a mucous membrane, commonly through a bite or scratch. CDC clinical guidance also considers direct contact of broken skin or mucous membranes with infectious tissue or fluids. Simply being near an animal, seeing one, or touching intact fur does not by itself establish an exposure.

Do not use a short online description to rule yourself in or out. Public-health professionals apply local epidemiology and the details of the incident. In U.S. materials, bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes are among commonly recognized wildlife risks, but the relative risk and relevant species vary by location. How animal testing works
There is no live-animal screening test
Animal rabies testing is a laboratory and public-health procedure, not a home or veterinary screening test that clears a living animal. CDC states that there are no approved antemortem (before-death) tests for animals. The animal must be euthanized so qualified laboratory staff can examine brain tissue. The required specimen is a full cross-section containing tissue from both the brain stem and cerebellum.
Typical U.S. turnaround is 24 to 72 hours after the laboratory receives the specimen; that clock does not start at the time of the bite and does not include transport or the time needed to arrange collection. Details are in CDC’s Laboratory Methods for Rabies Testing.
Observation can be an alternative for some pets
A healthy dog, cat or ferret may qualify for a 10-day post-exposure observation process. This is not a universal rule for every mammal, every country or every circumstance. Authorities consider whether the animal can be located safely, the species, its health during observation and local rabies patterns. Do not decide to wait ten days without explicit public-health direction.
How results affect PEP
Under the CDC decision aid, a suitable negative laboratory result can mean PEP is not indicated or can be stopped, but only under public-health guidance. A positive or indeterminate result, an animal that cannot be located or tested, or a high-risk species may lead authorities to recommend PEP. The September 2026 algorithm is available at CDC’s Rabies PEP Algorithm.

Can a person be tested after a recent exposure?
There is no simple consumer test that clears someone after a recent contact. Treatment decisions are based on the exposure investigation and public-health risk assessment, not on waiting for a negative personal test.
CDC discusses rabies-virus-neutralizing antibody testing mainly for people with immune compromise or another concern that they may not mount an adequate response to vaccination. A physician and public-health officials determine whether testing is needed and when to draw it after the series. An antibody result is not a self-directed replacement for exposure assessment or PEP.
U.S. CDC PEP schedules
PEP combines wound care with vaccine, and for many unvaccinated people, human rabies immune globulin (HRIG). The schedules below summarize current U.S. CDC recommendations; a clinician and public-health authority decide whether PEP is indicated and coordinate the exact regimen.
Recommended Free Tools
| Situation | HRIG | Rabies vaccine | Additional follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never vaccinated; standard immune status | One dose at the start. Infiltrate as much as possible into and around wounds; inject any remainder at a distant intramuscular site. | Days 0, 3, 7 and 14 (four doses). | If HRIG was missed on day 0, CDC says it may be given through day 7 of the vaccine series. |
| Previously vaccinated | None. | Days 0 and 3 (two doses). | Tell the clinician exactly which prior rabies vaccines you received and when. |
| Immune disorder or concern for inadequate response | HRIG as directed. | Days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 (five doses). | Post-series antibody testing, with timing and interpretation directed by the clinician and public-health officials. |
“Day 0” means the first vaccine dose, not necessarily the calendar day of the exposure. HRIG is given once, at the beginning of the series. CDC says pregnancy is not a contraindication to PEP, and it lists no known contraindications to rabies vaccination; clinicians still review the individual situation.

Why prior vaccination changes treatment
Prior vaccination means the immune system is expected to respond more quickly, so HRIG is omitted and only two vaccine doses are used. If records are unclear, bring any documentation to the assessment rather than assuming you count as previously vaccinated.
Why immune status matters
Some immune disorders or treatments can reduce vaccine response. In that situation, CDC recommends the five-dose schedule and antibody follow-up. Do not add, skip or move doses on your own; the treating team adjusts the plan when necessary.
Is it too late to start PEP?
Do not assume that a delay makes evaluation pointless. CDC recommends HRIG plus vaccine for eligible, previously unvaccinated people regardless of the interval between exposure and treatment, as long as the person is not showing signs consistent with rabies. The practical instruction is to seek assessment now, even if the bite or contact was days or longer ago.
This guidance is not permission to wait. PEP works by preventing the virus from reaching the nervous system and must begin before symptoms. Because the incubation period varies, only a clinician and public-health authority can judge a delayed exposure. Do not wait for an animal test, a symptom or a convenient appointment if you can obtain urgent advice sooner.

How officials decide whether PEP is needed
Public-health staff combine several facts rather than applying one species list or one waiting period:
- Whether a qualifying exposure occurred: bite, scratch or infectious saliva/tissue contacting broken skin or a mucous membrane.
- Species and location: local rabies prevalence and wildlife patterns can change the risk.
- Animal availability: whether a healthy dog, cat or ferret can complete supervised 10-day observation, or whether the animal can be safely tested.
- Laboratory result: positive, negative or indeterminate findings alter the recommendation.
- Human factors: prior vaccination, immune status, wound location and whether symptoms have begun.
The algorithm is a decision aid, not a replacement for state reporting rules or consultation. Ask the health department what information it needs: date and time, exact location, animal species and behavior, whether skin was broken, where saliva or tissue contacted you, the animal’s owner or location, and any vaccination records.

Early rabies illness can be nonspecific, and later disease can involve neurologic deterioration. A person who may have been exposed and is becoming ill should not try to distinguish rabies from another infection at home. Go to an emergency department and tell staff about the possible exposure, the animal and any PEP already received. CDC’s Clinical Overview of Rabies notes that human cases in the United States are uncommon but the disease is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and safer alternatives
- Waiting for symptoms: symptoms mark a medical emergency, not a safe time to decide. Wash and call now.
- Assuming proximity equals exposure: ordinary presence near an animal is not enough, but uncertain saliva or broken-skin contact needs professional assessment.
- Trying to test a live animal: there is no approved antemortem animal test. Let authorities arrange observation or euthanasia and laboratory submission.
- Waiting ten days automatically: observation applies only to selected healthy dogs, cats and ferrets under official supervision.
- Using the wrong vaccine schedule: prior vaccination and immune status change HRIG and dose count; follow the regimen documented by your care team.
- Stopping after a reassuring phone call from a non-authority: obtain a clear recommendation from a clinician or public-health professional who has the exposure details.
Geography and limits of this schedule
The schedules and decision points here are current U.S. CDC guidance (including the September 2026 update). Rabies prevalence, animal species, vaccine products, reporting rules and PEP protocols differ elsewhere. If the exposure occurred outside the United States, contact that country’s public-health service or an experienced travel-medicine clinician; do not silently substitute the U.S. schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need rabies shots after every animal bite?
No. A bite does not automatically mean PEP, and a non-bite contact may still matter if infectious saliva or tissue reached broken skin or a mucous membrane. A clinician and public-health authority make the case-specific decision.
Can an animal be tested for rabies while it is alive?
CDC says there are no approved antemortem animal tests. Laboratory testing requires euthanasia and examination of brain tissue, coordinated through public-health and veterinary authorities.
What if I cannot find the animal?
Tell the health department immediately. Whether PEP is advised depends on the species, location, exposure details and the inability to observe or test the animal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does pregnancy prevent rabies PEP?
CDC says pregnancy is not a contraindication to PEP. The treating clinician still coordinates the regimen for the individual patient.
