If a lender says your information was exposed, start with the breach notice, verify the lender through contact details you find independently, and then match your response to the data involved. Secure any affected account, review your credit reports and transactions, and consider a free credit freeze or fraud alert when identity information was exposed. If you find actual misuse, report it at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach and follow the recovery plan. The Federal Trade Commission’s video puts the first step simply: “First, take a deep breath.”
1. Read the lender’s notice before choosing a response
The notice is the authority for what happened, when it happened, which accounts were affected, what categories of information were involved, and whether the lender is offering monitoring or identity-theft assistance. A breach does not by itself prove that someone has used your information.

Identify the exposed information
Look for specific terms such as Social Security number, driver’s-license or state-identification number, account number, login credentials, payment-card data, income or loan documents, address, phone number, or email address. The more sensitive and reusable the data, the more extensive your response should be. Exposure of a password calls for credential changes; exposure of an SSN raises the risk of new-account fraud and supports considering a credit freeze or fraud alert.

Save the notice and note the incident dates, the date your letter or email was sent, enrollment deadlines for any offered service, the length of free monitoring, and instructions for contacting the lender. Keep copies of your enrollment confirmation and any messages you send. If the notice is unclear, ask the lender’s security or fraud department to explain which data elements were involved.

Verify that the notice and any follow-up are genuine
Do not use a phone number or link supplied by an unexpected caller or text message until you have checked it. Find the lender’s official website by typing the address yourself or using a statement you already possess, then use the published customer-service or fraud number. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns that impostors may pose as financial institutions or government agencies. No legitimate agency needs you to transfer money to “protect” it.
2. Contact the lender and secure the affected relationship
Use the fraud or security department
Tell the lender that you received a breach notice and ask what protective actions it recommends for your specific account. Ask whether credentials, account numbers, application records, or payment information were included. If an account may be compromised, ask whether it should be closed, replaced, or assigned a new number, and how automatic payments or deposits will be moved without interruption.
Check for account takeover
Sign in through the lender’s normal website or app, not through a breach-notice link. Review recent transactions, profile changes, new payees, linked bank accounts, password resets, address changes, and unfamiliar devices or sessions. Download statements or screenshots showing suspicious activity. Change the account password to a unique one and enable multifactor authentication if the lender offers it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect reused credentials elsewhere
If the exposed password was used on another service, change it there immediately and change any account that used a similar password. Start with email: control of your email account can let an attacker reset other passwords. Sign out of other sessions, review recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and remove unfamiliar authentication methods. Never share a one-time code with someone who called you.

Watch payment activity
Review the lender account, connected checking account, and payment cards for transactions you do not recognize. Report unauthorized activity promptly using the institution’s official number. Continue checking statements after the initial review because criminals may wait before attempting a transaction.
3. Review your credit reports when identity data was exposed
If the notice says your SSN or comparable identity data was involved, obtain your free credit reports from the nationwide credit-reporting companies and inspect them for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, collection accounts, addresses, or employers. Check all three reports because information can differ between them.
What to flag
- Credit cards, personal loans, auto loans, or utility accounts you did not open.
- Hard inquiries from companies you do not recognize.
- Misspelled names, addresses, phone numbers, or employers that suggest a mixed or altered file.
- Collection notices for debts you never incurred.
Mark each item, the bureau reporting it, and the date you noticed it. Contact the business’s fraud department for an account opened in your name and dispute inaccurate information with the credit-reporting company that lists it. Keep copies of reports, disputes, letters, and delivery confirmations.

4. Decide between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
Both protections are free, but they work differently. Choose based on the type of information exposed and how much control you want over new-credit applications.

| Feature | Credit freeze | Fraud alert |
|---|---|---|
| Main effect | Restricts potential creditors’ access to your credit report, making it harder to open new credit in your name. | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. |
| Where to place it | Separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. | An initial alert can be requested from any one of the three; that bureau must notify the other two. |
| Duration | Until you lift or remove it. | Initial alert lasts one year and can be renewed. An identity-theft victim who qualifies for an extended alert can request seven years. |
| Applying for credit | You may need to lift the freeze temporarily before a legitimate application. | The report remains accessible, but the business is told to take extra steps to verify you. |

When a freeze is the stronger choice
A freeze is generally the more restrictive option when an SSN or similar identifier was exposed, especially if you do not expect to apply for credit soon. It does not stop every kind of fraud: it primarily makes opening new credit accounts more difficult. Existing-account takeover, tax fraud, benefit fraud, and scams still require account monitoring and other safeguards.
When an alert may fit
An initial fraud alert is useful when you want creditors to verify your identity but do not want to manage a freeze before every credit application. You request it from one bureau, which should notify the other two. Renew the alert after one year if the risk remains. If you have confirmed identity theft, ask whether you qualify for the seven-year extended alert.
Using both
You may use a fraud alert alongside a freeze. The freeze controls access to your reports; the alert adds an identity-verification instruction when a creditor receives a report after you lift the freeze or for circumstances in which access is otherwise permitted.
5. If you find misuse, start the identity-theft recovery process
Contact each affected business
Call the fraud department of the lender, card issuer, retailer, or other business tied to the suspicious account. Ask to close or suspend the account, stop additional charges, and send written confirmation. For a new account opened in your name, ask what documents it needs to investigate and how to obtain transaction records.

Report the theft through the official recovery site
Use IdentityTheft.gov to report identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission’s process creates an Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Follow the plan’s steps for contacting businesses, disputing accounts, and replacing compromised credentials. Save the report and plan with your other records.
Escalate credit-file problems
Dispute fraudulent accounts with every credit-reporting company that lists them and provide the Identity Theft Report when requested. Ask the business that furnished the information to investigate and block or remove fraudulent information according to its procedures. Continue checking updated reports to confirm that corrections appeared.
Report related crimes or document loss
If your wallet, identification document, mail, or device was stolen, report it to the appropriate issuing agency or local law-enforcement department. The recovery plan may identify additional steps based on the type of identity theft. A lender’s breach notice does not replace those incident-specific reports.
6. Use free services offered with the notice carefully
A lender may offer free credit monitoring, identity-restoration assistance, or identity-theft insurance. The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to use relevant free services offered by the breached company. Read the notice for the exact enrollment website, deadline, covered reports, monitoring period, restoration scope, and any automatic renewal or consent terms.

What monitoring can and cannot do
Monitoring can alert you to some new inquiries, accounts, or changes. It cannot remove a fraudulent account by itself, prevent account takeover, or replace a freeze when a freeze is appropriate. Enroll only through independently verified official contact details, and do not provide payment information to receive a service described as free in the notice.
Do not buy a product just because a breach occurred
The core response is contacting the lender, securing accounts, checking credit, and using the free protections available from the bureaus and the lender. The official guidance does not establish that a paid monitoring package, gadget, book, or other physical product is necessary.
7. Keep a practical record and watch for impersonation
Create a breach file
- The original notice and envelope or email headers.
- A timeline of calls, messages, disputes, account closures, and replacement numbers.
- Names or reference numbers supplied by the lender and credit-reporting companies.
- Copies of credit reports, Identity Theft Reports, police reports, and supporting documents.
- Proof of mailing and screenshots of confirmation pages.
Expect follow-up scams
After a publicized breach, criminals may call claiming to be from the lender, a credit bureau, or a government agency. They may know some correct details and pressure you to act immediately, install remote-access software, disclose a verification code, or move money to a “safe” account. Hang up and call the organization using a number you found independently. Government agencies and financial institutions do not require a transfer to protect your funds.
8. A simple order of operations
- Read the notice and list the exposed data, affected accounts, dates, services, and deadlines.
- Verify the lender independently and contact its security or fraud department.
- Change exposed or reused passwords, secure email, enable multifactor authentication, and review sessions.
- Inspect lender, bank, and card activity; report and document anything unfamiliar.
- Obtain and review all three credit reports when SSN or identity data was exposed.
- Place a free freeze separately at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, or place an initial fraud alert through one bureau; use both when appropriate.
- If misuse appears, close or correct affected accounts and report it at IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
- Enroll in relevant free lender-provided monitoring or restoration support using the notice’s verified instructions.
- Keep monitoring statements, credit reports, and account alerts, and renew or maintain protections as needed.
What this guidance does not decide
Federal consumer resources provide the steps above, but state breach-notification rights, lender-specific obligations, tax or benefits fraud procedures, and deadlines can depend on your state and the incident details. If you face disputed debt, significant financial loss, or a legal deadline, consider advice from a qualified consumer-protection or legal professional. Your lender’s notice and the official instructions from the relevant agency control the details of your particular case.
