Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter a layoff, handle deadlines before launching a full job search. In the first two days, preserve every employment and benefits record, get final-pay and severance terms in writing, and build a 30-day bare-bones budget. During the first week, file unemployment with the state where you worked and choose a health-coverage path before its enrollment window closes. Then protect your retirement savings, reconnect with professional contacts, and review every claim, payment and deadline before day 30.
This checklist is U.S.-focused. Unemployment rules, final-pay timing, severance terms, state continuation coverage and tax results depend on your state, employer plan and personal facts.

Day 0–2: preserve records and stabilize cash flow
Do not rely on a departing work account or a verbal explanation. Create a personal folder—digital and paper—and save copies while you still have access.
Save the documents you may need later
- Layoff notice and any reduction-in-force announcement.
- Severance agreement, employer severance policy and every attachment.
- Benefits termination notice, Summary Plan Description and plan-administrator contact details.
- Recent pay stubs, equity or stock records, commission and bonus plans, and expense-account records.
- HR emails, messages and notes from termination meetings.
- 401(k) statement, vesting information and the plan’s recordkeeper contact.
Store the files in a personal location, not only on a company laptop or cloud account. Keep the originals unchanged and make a separate note of dates, names and promises made in conversations. Download records you are permitted to retain, but do not copy confidential company material or another person’s private information. A simple index listing the document, date received and where it is stored makes later agency or adviser conversations faster.

Get final-pay information in writing
Email HR or payroll and ask for the expected payment date and calculation for salary, accrued paid time off, commissions, bonuses and expense reimbursements. Federal law does not require an immediate final paycheck; the normal payday may apply, while state law can require faster payment (U.S. Department of Labor, 2026). Ask which items are pending approval, whether any commission or bonus has a separate payout date, and how you can dispute an error. Save the reply and compare each deposit with the written calculation.
Read before signing a severance agreement
Severance is generally created by an agreement, employer policy or contract; the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require it (U.S. Department of Labor, 2026). Check the payment amount and schedule, benefits continuation, release of claims, confidentiality and non-disparagement language, cooperation obligations, treatment of equity, and any deadline to accept. Confirm whether payment is a lump sum or installments and whether the agreement says anything about unemployment or other benefits. Do not sign merely to stop the uncertainty. If a clause affects a legal claim, restrictive covenant or substantial payment, obtain advice from a qualified attorney or legal-aid office before the acceptance deadline. Ask questions in writing so the final agreement, not an informal promise, controls your decision.
Build a 30-day survival budget
List cash on hand and expected income, then rank expenses by consequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Housing, utilities, food, transportation, medication and other essentials.
- Debt minimums and required insurance premiums.
- Health-coverage premiums and likely medical costs.
- Subscriptions, discretionary purchases and services you can pause.
Use actual account balances rather than hoped-for unemployment or severance. A simple spreadsheet with due date, amount, payment method and cancellation or hardship contact gives you a working cash-flow calendar. Add the COBRA or Marketplace premium you are considering, because losing employer coverage can change the monthly number substantially. Mark which bills are automatic and decide deliberately whether to leave each payment on autopay. Recheck the budget whenever a benefit, severance installment or final-pay amount is confirmed.
Day 1–7: file for income and protect health coverage
File unemployment promptly
Apply through the unemployment-insurance program in the state where you worked as soon as possible. The U.S. Department of Labor specifically advises contacting that state program promptly; each state decides eligibility, weekly benefit amounts and administration. A first payment generally takes two to three weeks after filing, subject to state processing (U.S. Department of Labor, 2026).
- Use the state program’s official application channel and keep the confirmation number.
- Provide accurate employer, work-date and separation information. Describe the layoff consistently with your notice.
- Save every submission, determination, message and requested-document list.
- Put any response, appeal or certification date on your calendar immediately.
Do not wait for a severance payment or a final pay stub before applying unless the state program specifically instructs you to do so. If the agency asks for clarification, answer by its stated deadline and retain proof of delivery. Continue any weekly or periodic certification the state portal requires, even while a question is being reviewed, and report earnings or other changes exactly as instructed. If a determination is unfavorable, read the appeal deadline rather than assuming an informal phone call extends it.
Map your health-coverage deadlines
Job-based coverage can end on a date different from your last day of work. Ask the plan administrator for the exact termination date, the election notice, premium amount, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, prescription coverage and the date coverage would begin if elected retroactively.

| Coverage route | What to verify | Deadline or cost point established by the cited guidance |
|---|---|---|
| COBRA continuation | Full premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, doctors and prescriptions, election and payment instructions, and retroactive effective date. | Generally available for up to 18 months. The worker usually pays the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. The election period is generally 60 days after the notice is sent or coverage ends, whichever is later (U.S. Department of Labor, 2026). |
| Marketplace plan | Monthly premium after any subsidy, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, network, prescriptions and effective date. | HealthCare.gov generally allows an application within 60 days after losing job-based coverage. Subsidy eligibility and plan prices depend on household and income facts (HealthCare.gov, 2026). |
| Spouse or dependent plan | Whether the household plan permits a special enrollment after loss of coverage, its premium change, network and effective date. | Not stated in the cited federal guidance; confirm the plan’s enrollment rule with its administrator. |
| Medicaid or CHIP | State eligibility, covered providers, prescriptions and start date. | Not stated in the cited federal guidance; check your state program promptly because eligibility is state-specific. |
Compare total annual exposure, not just the monthly premium. A cheaper premium can be outweighed by a high deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, out-of-network doctors or uncovered prescriptions. For each option, write down the monthly premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, doctors and hospitals you would keep, prescription formulary, subsidy eligibility, effective date and enrollment deadline. Ask whether a Marketplace plan’s effective date leaves a gap and whether COBRA can be elected later within its window with retroactive coverage; the plan administrator must provide the controlling dates and terms. If family members have different medical needs, compare the cost and network for the whole household rather than choosing only for the laid-off worker.
Keep a benefits-deadline calendar
Create separate entries for the last day of active coverage, COBRA notice date, COBRA election deadline, first premium due date, Marketplace special-enrollment deadline, unemployment requests and severance installments. Set reminders at least one week before each date. A phone reminder is useful, but keep the authoritative notice and your written confirmation in the records folder. When you call an administrator, record the date, representative’s name, reference number and promised follow-up; send a short confirming email when possible.
Day 3–10: decide what to do with your 401(k)
Download the latest statement and vesting schedule before changing anything. Confirm the plan administrator’s phone number and ask whether a former employee may leave the account in the plan, whether a minimum balance applies, and how outstanding loans are handled. Request the distribution and rollover instructions in writing, including the exact name and address to use for a receiving plan or IRA.
| Option | Potential advantages | Costs and questions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Leave money in the former employer’s plan | No immediate transaction and continued access to that plan’s investments. | Compare administrative and investment fees, available funds, loan features, service access and any minimum-balance rule. |
| Direct rollover to a new employer plan | Consolidates retirement savings while preserving tax deferral when the new plan accepts rollovers. | Check the new plan’s fees, investment menu, creditor protection, loan availability and administrative process. |
| Direct rollover to an IRA | May provide a broader investment menu and one account to manage. | Compare investment expenses, advisory costs, creditor protection, tax treatment and simplicity; obtain individualized advice when the amount is material. |
| Take a distribution | Provides cash when no other source is available. | An eligible distribution not sent by direct rollover generally has 20% mandatory withholding. Before age 59½, an additional 10% tax may apply unless an exception applies (U.S. Department of Labor, 2026). |
A direct rollover sends the money from the old plan to the new plan or IRA without the mandatory 20% withholding that applies to an eligible distribution paid to you. Cashing out can also create ordinary income and, for many younger workers, the additional 10% tax. Compare fees, investments, creditor protection, loan access and tax treatment before moving the account; a tax professional or fiduciary adviser can address facts the general rules do not. Do not treat an outstanding plan loan as free cash: ask the administrator how termination affects the loan and what repayment or distribution choices are available. Keep confirmation that the rollover was received and check the new account statement after processing.
Day 7–14: restart the search with free support
Use an American Job Center or Rapid Response team
Contact an American Job Center or a Rapid Response team rather than paying for help you can obtain publicly. The U.S. Department of Labor identifies services that can include:
- Resume preparation and interview workshops.
- Career counseling and labor-market information.
- Training referrals.
- Unemployment assistance.
- Health-benefit and pension information.
Ask what is available in your area, whether appointments are virtual or in person, and which documents to bring. Keep the counselor’s name and any referral or training deadline with your other records. Ask specifically whether a training program has an application deadline, eligibility test or effect on your unemployment requirements, and get those details from the center rather than relying on a general web page.
Create a one-page accomplishment inventory
Before rewriting a resume, list projects, problems solved, tools used, scale, measurable outcomes and the people who can verify the work. Turn that inventory into a focused resume and update your LinkedIn profile only after checking that contact details and employment dates are accurate. Ask former colleagues for references and introductions; give them a short description of the roles you are targeting so they can make a useful connection. Keep a master version of your accomplishments, then tailor the opening summary and evidence to each role instead of sending an identical document everywhere.

Set a sustainable weekly rhythm
A layoff creates both administrative work and emotional strain. Use one tracker for applications, networking conversations, follow-ups, training and benefit deadlines. A practical week contains a small number of tailored applications, several genuine networking conversations, a defined block for skills work and protected recovery time. Adjust the mix based on response rates rather than treating application count as the only measure of progress. Reserve a recurring block for administrative calls so benefit issues do not consume every job-search day.

Day 15–30: review, adjust and protect optionality
Reconcile every claim and payment
- Check unemployment correspondence, payment history and any request for identity or wage information.
- Confirm whether you elected COBRA or another plan and that the administrator received the election and premium.
- Match severance installments, final salary, PTO, commissions, bonuses and reimbursements to the written terms.
- Compare the 30-day budget with actual spending and update the cash runway.
Request a written explanation for any missing or incorrect item. Keep a ledger showing the expected amount, actual amount, date received and the person or agency handling a correction. This record is especially useful when a payment is split between payroll, benefits and a former employer’s outside administrator.
Contact creditors before a missed payment
If the budget shows a shortfall, call lenders, utilities or service providers before the due date and ask about hardship options, changed payment dates or temporary arrangements. Do not stop a required payment on your own; obtain the terms in writing and record whether interest, fees or reporting consequences change. Put any approved arrangement on the same cash-flow calendar as your benefit deadlines.
Follow up on warm contacts and training
Send a concise update to each person who offered an introduction, reference or lead. Follow up with training providers about enrollment, eligibility and start dates. Keep copies of applications, messages, interview notes and agency submissions so you can prove what was sent and when. At day 30, review which channels produced conversations and concentrate the next month on the most responsive ones.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Waiting to file unemployment
Risk: You lose time while expecting severance or a final paycheck. Correction: File promptly with the state where you worked, then respond to agency requests by their deadlines.
Assuming the last day of work is the coverage end date
Risk: You miss a COBRA or Marketplace deadline or discover a gap when a prescription is due. Correction: Get the termination date and retroactive-effective-date rules in writing, then calendar the election and first-payment dates.
Choosing health coverage by premium alone
Risk: A low monthly payment hides a high deductible, a different network or prescription exclusions. Correction: Compare premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, provider and prescription continuity, subsidy eligibility, effective date and enrollment deadline.

Signing severance without reading the release
Risk: You accept obligations or waive claims without understanding the trade-off. Correction: Read every clause, note the acceptance deadline and obtain qualified legal advice when the language or payment is significant.
Cashing out a 401(k) reflexively
Risk: Withholding, income tax and a possible additional tax reduce the amount available for retirement. Correction: Compare leaving the funds, a direct rollover to a new plan or an IRA, and a distribution only after considering immediate cash needs.
Keeping records only in a work account
Risk: Access disappears after termination. Correction: Save lawful copies of notices, pay records, plan contacts and correspondence in a personal, secure folder.

Escalate when a deadline, denial or payment cannot be resolved through ordinary customer service. Contact the relevant state labor or unemployment agency for state-law pay or benefit questions; the plan administrator for COBRA, retirement or plan-document disputes; and a legal-aid office or qualified attorney for a contested severance clause or legal claim. Keep the notice, your correspondence, dates and proof of submission together so an adviser can understand the issue quickly. These resources can explain procedures, but only an adviser with your facts can provide individualized legal or tax advice.
Your 30-day operating checklist
| Time window | Non-negotiable actions | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0–2 | Save records; ask for final-pay details; read severance; build a bare-bones budget. | Layoff notice, agreement, pay and benefits correspondence, budget. |
| Day 1–7 | File unemployment; obtain health-plan dates and notices; compare coverage routes; calendar deadlines. | Claim confirmation, notices, quotes, election and payment instructions. |
| Day 3–10 | Download 401(k) records; compare staying, direct rollover and distribution before acting. | Statement, vesting data, fee and investment information, rollover instructions. |
| Day 7–14 | Contact an American Job Center or Rapid Response team; update job materials; establish a weekly rhythm. | Appointments, resume versions, contact log, training referrals. |
| Day 15–30 | Recheck benefits, severance and pay; reconcile spending; seek hardship options early; follow up with contacts and providers. | Payment ledger, agency messages, lender terms, applications and follow-ups. |
By the end of the first month, you should know which income claim is active, when health coverage starts and ends, what happens to the retirement account, which payments are still due, and where the next job-search conversations are coming from. That documented clarity is the practical goal of the checklist.

Best Value
How long do I have to elect COBRA?
The general COBRA election window is 60 days after the notice is sent or coverage ends, whichever is later. COBRA generally lasts up to 18 months, and you usually pay the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. Confirm the controlling dates and retroactive coverage terms with the plan administrator.
Should I take COBRA or a Marketplace plan?
Compare annual cost, including premium, deductible and out-of-pocket maximum; doctor and prescription continuity; subsidy eligibility; effective date; and the enrollment deadline. HealthCare.gov generally allows a Marketplace application within 60 days after losing job-based coverage, while COBRA may preserve the existing network but cost more.
What happens to my 401(k) after a layoff?
You can often leave the money in the former plan, roll it directly to a new employer plan or IRA, or take a distribution. A direct rollover avoids the mandatory 20% withholding that generally applies when an eligible distribution is paid to you. Withdrawals before age 59½ may also incur an additional 10% tax unless an exception applies.
