A breach notice is a reason to act, not to panic. Verify the notice through the company’s official website or app, determine exactly what information and dates are involved, secure affected and reused accounts, use any legitimate assistance offered, and watch for misuse. The right controls depend on whether the exposed data was a password, payment account, Social Security number, health record, or phone-account credential.
Start with these actions in the first 24 hours
- Verify the announcement independently. Do not use links, phone numbers, attachments, or QR codes in an unexpected email or text. Open the company’s website or mobile app yourself, look for its breach-information page, or call a number printed on a statement or shown on the official site. Ask whether your account or customer record is included.
- Read the notice closely. Record the incident date, the date the company discovered it, the date your information was exposed, and every data category listed. A notice about an email address requires a different response from one involving a Social Security number or medical records.
- Change credentials immediately. Replace the password for the affected service with a long, unique password. Change every other account that used the same or a similar password. Turn on the strongest multifactor-authentication method available, preferably an authenticator app or security key rather than text messages when the service supports it.
- Protect financial and phone accounts. Contact the institution that maintains an exposed card or bank account and ask whether it should be locked, replaced, or closed. If a telecommunications account was involved, create or review an account passcode and watch for SIM swaps or number-porting requests.
- Use legitimate assistance. Review the terms of any free credit monitoring, identity-theft insurance, or restoration service offered by the affected company. Enroll only through a verified company channel and note the enrollment deadline and length of coverage.
- Set up monitoring and a record. Save the notice, enrollment details, account contacts, case numbers, and dates of every call. Check financial, credit, insurance, and medical activity for changes you did not make.
Determine what was exposed before choosing controls
Breach notices sometimes list several categories, and attackers can combine them. Treat each category separately and apply the most protective response that fits.

| Information named in the notice | Main risk | Priority response |
|---|---|---|
| Email address, username, or password | Account takeover, password-spraying, and convincing follow-up phishing | Change the exposed password and every reuse, enable multifactor authentication, and review sign-in sessions and recovery details. |
| Social Security number or other identity identifier | New-account fraud, employment or tax identity theft, and credit inquiries | Pull your credit reports, dispute unfamiliar accounts or inquiries, and consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. |
| Credit-card or bank-account details | Unauthorized purchases, transfers, or attempts to replace account credentials | Call the financial institution, ask about locking or replacing the account, and review transactions frequently. |
| Health or insurance information | False claims, billing fraud, altered records, or disclosure of sensitive treatment information | Compare explanation-of-benefits statements, provider bills, and medical records with care you actually received. |
| Phone number, carrier credentials, or account PIN | SIM-swap or port-out attacks that can intercept text-message codes | Set an account passcode, ask the carrier about port-out protections, and use non-SMS multifactor authentication where possible. |
Pay attention to dates. Information exposed years ago can still be useful to an identity thief, while a recently reset password may no longer be usable. If the notice is vague, ask the company which fields were involved and whether encrypted data was accessed or merely stored in the affected system.

Replace reused passwords
Start with the breached service, then work through email, banking, shopping, social, workplace, and cloud accounts that shared the old password. Use a different password for every account. A password manager can generate and store unique credentials, but the most important step is eliminating reuse. Do not merely change one character or add the current year.

Strengthen sign-in and recovery settings
Enable multifactor authentication and review the account’s active sessions, trusted devices, recovery email addresses, phone numbers, forwarding rules, and connected applications. Sign out devices you do not recognize. Check that an attacker has not created a new email-forwarding rule or changed notification settings that would hide security alerts.
Protect a compromised phone account
Ask your carrier to add or confirm an account PIN and to require additional verification before a SIM replacement or number transfer. Watch for a sudden loss of cellular service, an unexpected “SIM activated” message, or a carrier notice about a port request. If that happens, contact the carrier from another phone immediately and then change passwords for accounts that use the number for authentication.
If your Social Security number was exposed
Obtain your free credit reports from the authorized credit-reporting sources and inspect every account, address, balance, and inquiry. Mark anything unfamiliar and contact the listed creditor through a verified number. Keep copies of reports and dispute correspondence.

You generally need to lift it temporarily when you apply for credit, so keep the security credentials for each credit bureau in a secure place. A freeze does not stop takeover of an existing bank or card account, and it does not prevent every form of identity theft.
Consider filing your tax return early and respond promptly to any tax-authority notice. A stolen Social Security number can be used to submit a fraudulent return or claim employment income. Keep the breach notice with your tax records so you can explain why an identity-protection measure was placed.

If payment-card or bank information was exposed
Call the bank or card issuer using the number on your card, statement, or official app. Explain that the account was included in a breach and ask whether the institution recommends a temporary lock, a replacement card, a new account number, or closure. Ask how recurring payments and direct deposits will be handled before changing an account number.
Review transactions daily at first, including small authorization charges that can precede larger fraud. Turn on instant transaction notifications and verify contact information on the account. Report unauthorized activity as soon as you see it; waiting can complicate the institution’s investigation and recovery process. Continue checking statements after a replacement card arrives because criminals may target the underlying account rather than the old card number.

If health or insurance information was exposed
Compare every explanation-of-benefits form and provider bill with appointments, prescriptions, tests, and equipment you actually received. Look for unfamiliar providers, duplicate services, changed addresses, or claims submitted on dates when you were not treated. Request a copy of your medical record when a treatment entry or diagnosis appears wrong.
Contact the insurer’s fraud or member-services department and the provider’s billing or privacy office. Ask them to flag the account, correct inaccurate records, investigate false claims, and explain how future statements will be delivered securely. Keep the names of representatives, reference numbers, disputed dates, and copies of documents. Medical identity errors can affect future care, so tell clinicians about a disputed entry before it influences treatment.
Credit freeze or fraud alert: which fits?
The Federal Trade Commission describes a freeze as stopping most access to a consumer’s credit report, while a fraud alert warns creditors to verify an applicant before opening or changing an account. Both can help after a breach, but they differ in strength and convenience.

| Consideration | Credit freeze | Fraud alert |
|---|---|---|
| Protection strength | Stronger barrier against most new-credit applications using your identity. | Lighter warning that asks creditors to contact you for verification. |
| Speed to arrange | Requires placing the freeze with each relevant credit bureau. | One bureau generally shares the alert with the others; follow the confirmation instructions. |
| Applying for credit | You must temporarily lift or remove the freeze for a legitimate application. | You can usually apply without lifting a block, but verification calls may add time. |
| Existing-account fraud | Does not stop misuse of an existing card, bank, or insurance account. | Also does not stop existing-account misuse. |
| Best fit | People who want maximum prevention after identity data exposure and can manage occasional lifts. | People who want a warning with less disruption, or who are actively applying for credit. |
Neither control replaces transaction, account, or medical-record monitoring. Use the company’s offered monitoring as an additional signal, not as proof that no fraud occurred.

A publicized breach gives criminals a believable story. They may impersonate the breached company, a bank, a credit bureau, a government agency, or a support service and claim that you must “verify” information, pay a fee, install software, or read a one-time code aloud.
- Be suspicious of urgency, threats of account closure, unexpected refunds, and requests for passwords, Social Security numbers, complete card numbers, or authentication codes.
- Inspect the sender and destination, but do not rely on branding or a familiar-looking display name; those details can be forged.
- End the conversation and start a new one through the company’s official app, typed web address, or published support number.
- Never approve a sign-in prompt you did not initiate. Change a password if you entered it on a suspicious page.
If you clicked a malicious link, disconnect the device from unfamiliar remote-control software, run its security updates and scans, and change credentials from a separate trusted device. Tell your bank immediately if payment details were entered.
Monitor on a schedule and keep evidence
For the first several weeks, review bank and card activity every day or whenever an alert arrives. Check credit reports and new-account notifications regularly, then continue at an interval that matches the exposed data and any monitoring period the company supplied. Recheck insurance statements and medical records when they arrive rather than filing them unopened.
Maintain a simple incident log with the notice, dates, affected accounts, password changes, freezes or alerts, calls, reference numbers, disputed items, and promised follow-up. Store it away from the breached account, such as in a secured local file or a different protected cloud account. Documentation helps prove when you reported a problem and prevents missed deadlines.

What to do when you find suspected identity theft
- Contact the organization that shows the suspicious account, charge, claim, or record and ask for its fraud process. Use an official contact route, not a message attached to the suspicious activity.
- Secure the related account: change credentials, revoke unknown sessions, replace exposed payment details, and preserve screenshots and statements.
- Report the incident at IdentityTheft.gov for a tailored recovery plan. Follow its document and notification steps.
- Place or maintain a credit freeze or fraud alert if identity information was involved, and notify other affected institutions identified in your records.
- Escalate urgent cases. Contact law enforcement when there is an immediate threat, significant financial loss, or a request for a report by a creditor or insurer.
Do not pay a caller who promises to “remove” your name from a breach or restore funds before you verify the organization independently. Legitimate institutions explain their process without demanding gift cards, cryptocurrency, remote access, or a one-time authentication code.
Evaluate the company’s assistance carefully
Free monitoring or restoration support can be useful, especially after exposure of identity data, but read what it actually covers. Check the enrollment deadline, eligibility geography, coverage duration, insurance exclusions, restoration hours, family coverage, and whether you must waive any rights to use the service. Confirm that enrollment does not require you to provide more information than the verified provider needs.
Keep the breach notice even if the company says no action is required. “No action” may mean that the company reset credentials or believes only limited fields were exposed; it does not guarantee that criminals will not use information already circulating elsewhere. Continue the level of monitoring appropriate to the categories listed in the notice.

That Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance points people to a breach-specific recovery plan. The FTC’s business guidance explains the purpose of a freeze this way: “A credit freeze stops most access to a consumer’s credit report, making it harder for an identity thief to open new accounts in the consumer’s name.”

Questions readers often have
Does receiving a breach notice mean someone has already stolen my identity?
No. A notice establishes that information was involved in an incident, not that a criminal has used it. It is a trigger for preventive controls and monitoring, not proof of a completed theft.
What if the company says my password was encrypted?
Keep the password change and reuse-removal steps. Encryption or hashing can reduce immediate exposure, but the notice may not describe the exact protection, and reused credentials remain vulnerable if another service is breached.
Should I close every account named in the notice?
Not automatically. Closing a bank or card account can disrupt direct deposits and recurring payments. Ask the institution whether a lock, replacement number, or targeted credential reset provides the needed protection, then follow its documented fraud recommendation.
How long should I watch for problems?
Use the monitoring period offered by the company as a minimum, but continue checking while the exposed information remains useful—particularly for Social Security numbers, medical identifiers, and phone-account credentials. The notice’s incident and exposure dates help you judge how long the risk has been present.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I place a credit freeze if I am planning to apply for a mortgage or loan soon?
Yes. Keep the freeze in place until the lender tells you which bureau and date it needs, then lift it temporarily and restore it after the application is processed.
What if I no longer have an account with the breached company?
Verify whether your historical customer record was included. If it was, apply the actions for each exposed data type even if you closed the account.
Is a company’s monitoring service enough by itself?
No. Monitoring can alert you to some credit or identity events, but it cannot block every account takeover, payment fraud, medical-record error, or SIM swap. Combine it with unique passwords, account controls, and your own statement reviews.
