What to do after a company notifies you that your data was breached

Start by confirming what information was exposed, then use the breach-specific checklist at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Change exposed and reused passwords, review the accounts and credit reports connected to the data, contact your bank or card issuer if payment details may be involved, and consider a free credit freeze or fraud alert if your Social Security number was exposed. Use any free monitoring or identity-theft insurance the company offers, and report suspected misuse through IdentityTheft.gov.

Take these steps first

A breach notification is a warning, not proof that someone has already stolen your identity. Acting methodically reduces the chance that an exposed password, account number or Social Security number becomes useful to a criminal.

  1. Save the notice. Download it or keep a paper copy. Note the company’s name, the incident date or date range, when your information was exposed, the types of data listed, what the company is doing, any services it offers, and how it will provide updates.
  2. Verify unexpected contact. If the message arrived by email, text or phone and asks you to click a link, provide a code or send money, stop. Visit the company’s official website or open its official app by typing the address yourself. Use a phone number or support page you find there, not contact details in a suspicious message.
  3. Open the tailored checklist. Enter your situation at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. The correct response depends on whether the exposed data was a login, Social Security number, payment detail or another sensitive identifier.
  4. Secure access immediately. Change the affected username credentials, password and PIN. Change every other account that used the same password or a close variation. Use a unique password for each account and turn on multifactor authentication where it is available.
  5. Start watching for misuse. Review the affected service, bank and card accounts for unfamiliar logins, profile changes, transfers, purchases or new payees. If a Social Security number was exposed, obtain and review your credit reports for accounts and inquiries you do not recognize.

Match your response to the information exposed

Read the notice closely: “personal information” can cover very different risks. The table below is a practical starting point; follow the company’s current instructions and the breach-specific guidance for your exact data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Information listed in the notice Priority actions What to watch
Login credentials, passwords or PINs Change the affected login, password and PIN. Replace reused credentials on every other service. Enable multifactor authentication. Unknown sign-ins, password-reset emails, changed recovery details and messages sent from your account.
Social Security number Get and review your credit reports. Consider a free credit freeze; if you do not freeze, consider a fraud alert. Consider filing your taxes early. New accounts, credit inquiries, collection notices, tax correspondence or other activity you did not initiate.
Payment-card or bank details Contact the card issuer or bank through its official channel. Ask what replacement, transaction-monitoring or account protections it recommends. Unfamiliar purchases, withdrawals, transfers, added payees and changes to contact information.
Other sensitive personal information Use the checklist at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. The useful response depends on the specific identifier and the company’s instructions. Requests for verification, benefits, services or account changes that use the exposed information.

When a password or account login was exposed

Change the password from the account’s real website or app, not from a link in the notification. Sign out other sessions if the service provides that option, review recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and remove unfamiliar devices or app connections. A password used at the breached company can be tested against your email address on other services, so reuse is the main danger even when those other services were not part of the breach. Use a password manager or another secure method to create distinct passwords rather than small variations.

When your Social Security number was exposed

A Social Security number can be used to apply for credit or other services in your name. Obtain and inspect your credit reports for accounts, balances and inquiries you cannot explain. A free credit freeze blocks prospective creditors from accessing your credit report unless you lift or remove the freeze. You must request a freeze separately from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus.

A one-year fraud alert is another free option. Contact one nationwide bureau; it must notify the other two. An alert asks businesses to take additional steps to verify that an applicant is really you, but it does not block access to your report. If you have experienced identity theft, an extended fraud alert lasts seven years and requires an FTC Identity Theft Report. Read the official instructions before choosing, and remember that a freeze may need to be temporarily lifted when you apply for credit or another service that requires a credit check.

The Federal Trade Commission also advises considering filing your tax return early after a Social Security number exposure. The goal is to reduce the opportunity for an identity thief to file first using your information. Keep the notice and any confirmation of a freeze or alert with your tax records.

When payment or bank information was exposed

Call the financial institution using the number on your card, statement or official website. Explain that the account information appeared in a breach notice and ask what it recommends. The institution may advise replacing a card or account number, changing an online-banking password or PIN, adding transaction alerts, or taking another step based on the type of data exposed.

Review posted and pending transactions, not just the current balance. Report anything unfamiliar promptly and follow the institution’s dispute process. Continue checking after a replacement: criminals sometimes wait before attempting a transaction, and a new card does not correct a compromised online-banking password or email account.

Some breach notices include free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance for a stated period. FTC guidance says to take advantage of free services offered by the company. Read the enrollment deadline, covered information, duration, renewal terms and cancellation conditions. Enroll only through a verified company website or a phone number you independently located.

Monitoring can alert you to changes, but it does not prevent every misuse and it is not a substitute for changing credentials, reviewing accounts or placing a freeze or alert. Do not assume that a paid identity-protection subscription is required: the government and credit bureaus provide free freeze and alert options, and the breached company may already provide monitoring at no cost.

How a credit freeze differs from a fraud alert

Protection What it does How to start Practical trade-off
Credit freeze Limits access to your credit report until you lift or remove the freeze. Contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus individually. Strongly restricts new-credit applications, but you may need to lift it before applying for credit or a service that checks your report.
One-year fraud alert Asks businesses to take additional identity-verification steps before extending credit. Contact one nationwide credit bureau; it must notify the other two. Less restrictive than a freeze and does not block report access.
Extended fraud alert Provides the fraud-alert protection for seven years. Available to people who have experienced identity theft and requires an FTC Identity Theft Report. Use it when there is actual identity theft, not merely a notification that data may have been exposed.

Choose based on the evidence and your near-term plans. A Social Security number exposure with no known misuse can justify considering a freeze or one-year alert. If you discover identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery process and ask about the extended alert.

Keep monitoring without creating new risk

  • Bookmark the company’s verified breach-information page and check it for updates rather than following unexpected links.
  • Turn on account, login and transaction notifications where available.
  • Check credit reports at intervals after a Social Security number exposure, looking for new accounts, inquiries and address changes.
  • Watch email and mobile accounts that can be used to reset other passwords. Secure those accounts first if their credentials were reused.
  • Be skeptical of follow-up calls claiming to “restore” your identity. A real helper will not demand gift cards, cryptocurrency, remote access or your one-time authentication code.

Keep a dated log of the notice, passwords or accounts changed, calls made, confirmation numbers, disputes and bureau requests. This record helps you spot gaps and gives you an organized timeline if misuse appears later.

If you find fraudulent activity

  1. Contact the business where the fraud occurred. Ask its fraud department to close or freeze the affected account and explain what documentation it needs.
  2. Change the relevant credentials. Update the account password and any reused password elsewhere. Check recovery details and active sessions.
  3. Use IdentityTheft.gov. Its identity-theft reporting process creates a personalized recovery plan and explains how to handle fraudulent accounts, charges and credit-report entries.
  4. Dispute unfamiliar entries. Follow the bank, card issuer or creditor’s instructions for unauthorized transactions and the credit-report dispute process for accounts or inquiries you did not open.
  5. Continue the log and monitoring. Record each contact and date, keep copies of correspondence, and continue reviewing accounts and reports after the first issue is resolved.

Do not wait for a second incident before reporting the first one. Early contact can allow the business to restrict an account while its records and access logs are still available.

A practical timeline

Today

  • Save and authenticate the notice.
  • List every data type named in it.
  • Open the matching IdentityTheft.gov/databreach checklist.
  • Change exposed and reused passwords and PINs.
  • Contact the bank or card issuer if financial details were involved.

Within the next few days

  • Enroll in any verified free monitoring or identity-theft insurance before its deadline.
  • Obtain and review credit reports when a Social Security number was exposed.
  • Place a freeze or fraud alert if it fits your situation.
  • Turn on account and transaction alerts, and remove unfamiliar sessions or devices.

Ongoing

  • Review accounts, transactions and credit reports for changes you did not make.
  • Check the company’s verified update page for new information.
  • Keep your contact log and report any misuse through the affected business and IdentityTheft.gov.

What this guidance does not decide

Data-breach notification laws, deadlines, compensation and private legal remedies vary by state, the type of information and the facts of the incident. The steps above are U.S. consumer protections and recovery actions, not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion. If you need to assess legal rights or a deadline, consult an attorney or your state consumer-protection authority with the notice in hand.
