Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAfter a possible Candida auris exposure, first work out whether it involved a healthcare facility. If you were a patient with a possible link to an affected room, unit, care area, staff member, or shared medical equipment, contact the facility or your care team and ask whether screening is recommended. Healthy family members and visitors usually do not need routine testing. Symptoms alone cannot tell you whether you have C. auris.
What should you do after a possible exposure?
The next step depends on where and how the contact occurred. C. auris spreads mainly among patients in healthcare settings. A facility or public-health team may recommend screening when a patient has a meaningful epidemiologic link to someone with C. auris.

- If you were a patient in a healthcare facility: Contact your care team or the facility’s infection-prevention staff. Share the facility name, dates, and details of the possible contact, then ask: “Was my exposure considered an epidemiologic link, and should I be screened?”
- If you are ill after a healthcare exposure: Contact a clinician and mention the exposure, especially if you have a serious underlying condition, complex care needs, or an invasive medical device.
- If you are a family member or visitor who feels well: Routine screening is usually unnecessary. If you have major health problems or complex healthcare needs, ask your treating team about your specific circumstances.
Do not assume that every contact in a healthcare facility requires a test. Screening decisions and timing depend on the exposure and the facility or public-health response; CDC patient guidance does not set a universal number of days after exposure for testing.

Which exposures may lead to screening?
CDC screening recommendations focus on links within healthcare facilities. A facility may consider screening a patient who shared a room, unit, or other care area with an infected or colonized patient; received care from the same healthcare personnel during the same period; or used shared mobile medical equipment, particularly if cleaning and disinfection are in doubt. The facility or health department determines whether the link warrants screening as part of its infection-control response.

People without typical risk factors generally do not carry C. auris or become sick from it. It mainly affects people with serious underlying medical conditions, complex medical care needs, or invasive devices such as breathing tubes, feeding tubes, vascular catheters, or urinary catheters. CDC says screening family members and healthcare providers is usually unnecessary; that is not a guarantee of zero risk in every individual situation.
Do you need a C. auris test?
For colonization screening, a healthcare provider usually collects a skin swab from both armpits and the groin and sends it to a laboratory. CDC describes the screening as painless and without risks. It is arranged through healthcare, not a consumer home test.

A positive screen means C. auris was detected on the skin, which is called colonization. Colonization can occur without symptoms and does not, by itself, mean you have an active infection. CDC says colonized patients without symptoms should not be treated for C. auris and do not need retesting under its patient-screening guidance. Treatment for an actual infection is a clinical decision, not something to infer from a colonization result.

Can you have C. auris without symptoms?
Yes. A person can carry C. auris on the skin or another body site without feeling ill. This is colonization, which is different from an active infection. Screening looks for colonization; a positive screen is not a diagnosis of symptomatic disease.
What are the symptoms, and when should you seek care?
There is no symptom checklist that can identify C. auris. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “There is not a common set of symptoms specific for C. auris infections.” Symptoms depend on the site and severity of an infection and can resemble those of other infections. C. auris can affect the blood, wounds, or ears; fever or chills may occur, but neither identifies the fungus on its own.

What can family members and visitors do?
Clean your hands frequently with alcohol-based hand sanitizer when available, or with soap and water. CDC advises visitors to clean their hands before entering and after leaving a patient’s room. A family member providing high-touch care at home, such as bathing someone or changing a wound dressing, may consider wearing gloves. If someone returns home with an invasive device, follow the treating provider’s instructions for its care.
