Go to a safe place, such as a neighbour’s home, and call your local emergency number. Once you are safe, report the break-in, follow police instructions, and avoid disturbing possible evidence until officers have assessed the scene.
1. Get to safety before doing anything else
Do not go inside to check rooms, confront anyone, or search for a suspected intruder. Move somewhere safe and call emergency services if there is an immediate danger. If you are already inside and can leave safely, do so; otherwise, move away from the person and call for help.

Emergency numbers and reporting procedures depend on where you live. For example, Police Scotland says to call 999 if the intruder may still be there, and 101 or its online form if the intruder has gone. Toronto Police directs people to call 9-1-1 for a crime in progress or immediate threat. Victoria Police uses Triple Zero (000) for an active incident or immediate danger. These numbers are local examples, not interchangeable global advice. Nanaimo RCMP Media Relations Officer Gary O’Brien wrote in a February 2, 2026 release: “Do not try to confront anyone or investigate the scene yourself.”

Contact your local police service promptly using the emergency or non-emergency channel appropriate to the situation. Explain whether anyone may still be inside, where you noticed damage, and whether anything may have been touched or left behind. Mention any CCTV, doorbell-camera, or audio recordings. Ask what to do next and whether the property should remain undisturbed; police decide what evidence they can use and what examination is appropriate, and attendance is not guaranteed in every case.

Ask the Police, in its answer to Q756, advises: “Please do not attempt to clean up prior to the police arriving as it is essential that forensic evidence is not disturbed or destroyed.” If you have already touched or moved something, tell the police what happened rather than trying to conceal or correct it. Ask for the incident or file reference and keep it for follow-up and insurance communication.
3. Keep possible evidence undisturbed
Until police say it is appropriate to proceed, avoid walking through areas the intruder may have crossed, touching surfaces they may have handled, or cleaning blood, marks, or possible entry and exit points. Possible evidence includes fingerprints, footwear marks, tools, blood, and objects left behind. Tell officers what you saw; do not try to collect or examine evidence yourself. Ask the Police Q756 also advises avoiding the suspected entry door if possible.

If outdoor evidence is at immediate risk from weather or foot traffic, Metropolitan Police guidance says to cover the area without disturbing it. Nottinghamshire Police similarly advises covering threatened evidence and moving it only as a last resort, using gloves or a barrier if movement is unavoidable. Ask your local police service for directions rather than improvising a collection method.
If you were grabbed
Metropolitan Police advises telling police promptly and avoiding touching or washing the affected skin. If clothing may be relevant, its guidance says to change and place it in a clean plastic bag. Follow local police instructions, and do this only when it is relevant and safe.

4. Preserve camera and recording footage
Do not switch off a CCTV, doorbell, or other recording device, or change its settings. Metropolitan Police says that, if possible, downloaded footage should include five minutes before and five minutes after the incident. Keep the downloaded copy safe and leave the original on the device; tell police about the recording and ask how they want it preserved. If you cannot download the footage, leave the device on and note the date and time shown on its display.
5. Secure the property after police assessment
Wait until police have assessed or cleared the scene, or have told you it is safe to proceed, before starting repairs. Photograph the damage first. Tell repair workers which areas may contain evidence. Metropolitan Police suggests asking workers to leave broken glass in place if possible, wear gloves, avoid touching the inside of frames, and secure doors or windows from the outside. New Zealand Police also advises warning repair workers about possible fingerprints. Follow police directions about the order of temporary securing and repairs.

Choose repairs and longer-term security for the actual entry point
After scene clearance, police guidance supports considering repairs or security measures such as locks, additional locks, door security bars, certified security products, alarms, security lighting, and cameras. There is no single universally suitable or police-endorsed lock model. Ask a qualified locksmith or repair professional to assess the damaged door, window, or frame and check compatibility before buying or fitting replacement hardware. Consider whether a measure addresses the compromised entry point, fits the structure, meets locally relevant standards, and is a temporary repair or a longer-term improvement.

6. Document losses and contact your insurer
Once the scene is cleared, make a list of missing or damaged belongings. Record each item’s make, model, serial number, and estimated value where available, and take photographs where appropriate. Give the list to police or update the report as your local service permits. If payment cards or cheques are missing, Ask the Police advises contacting your bank immediately.

Contact your insurer after the scene is cleared and ask what your policy requires, including any documentation or deadlines. Requirements vary by policy. RCMP says insurers typically ask for a police file number, a list of stolen or damaged items, and photos where appropriate. Keep receipts and records of any emergency repairs or replacement costs, and follow your insurer’s instructions on what to retain or submit.
7. Get support if the break-in affects your sense of safety
A break-in can be distressing even after the immediate danger has passed. Local victim-support organizations may offer practical and emotional help. Police Scotland lists Victim Support Scotland and other organizations; Victoria Police describes local victim support services. Use the service for your area and check its current contact details through the relevant police or support organization.
