What to Consider When Choosing a Satellite Communications Provider for a Remote Site

The best satellite communications provider for a remote site is the one that is legally available at your exact coordinates, supports your applications under real congestion, fits the site’s power and mounting constraints, and offers service terms you can operate with. Do not choose from a speed headline or worldwide coverage map alone.

Before comparing providers, document the country, coordinates, fixed or mobile use, sky visibility, workloads, traffic volume, uptime target, security requirements and budget. Then obtain written, like-for-like quotes covering eligibility, performance, data policy, support, installation and total cost.

1. Confirm that service is actually permitted at the site

Availability is more than a provider entering a country on a coverage map. Check the exact service address or coordinates, the intended use and the local regulatory requirements before comparing plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Country, coordinates and service type

  • Ask whether the provider serves the exact site, not merely the country.
  • State whether the terminal will remain at one location, move between sites, operate on land while in motion, or be used at sea or in aviation.
  • Confirm that the proposed hardware and plan are approved for that country and use.
  • Record any seasonal access, temporary deployment or cross-border movement that could change eligibility.

Licensing can involve several permissions

Rules vary by jurisdiction. In a Brazil example, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) explains that an operator needs landing rights to provide satellite capacity; a retail provider also needs an individual service-provision licence, while earth stations, including gateways, are licensed. That is a Brazil-specific example, not a universal legal checklist. Ask the provider which party holds each required authorization and what you must obtain locally.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not install first and seek permission later. A technically reachable site can still be ineligible because of national licensing, import, spectrum, building or land-use rules.

2. Define the workload before looking at speeds

A remote site’s useful performance is determined by latency, jitter, upload capacity, congestion and data policy as much as by the advertised download maximum.

Map applications to their actual requirements

  • Voice and video: need stable latency, low jitter and sufficient upstream capacity. Test calls during the busy period you expect to operate.
  • VPNs and remote desktops: are sensitive to round-trip delay, packet loss and changing latency. Confirm that the service supports your VPN protocol and tunnel design.
  • Telemetry and monitoring: may use little bandwidth but require predictable delivery and the ability to reconnect automatically.
  • Cloud backup and file transfer: depend heavily on upload performance and the amount of data that can be sent before a priority allowance is exhausted.
  • Web and transactional systems: benefit from consistent response times rather than a short-lived peak speed.

Ask for region-specific expectations at busy periods, including latency, jitter, upload and download ranges. If a workflow is critical, run a pilot or acceptance test with representative devices and traffic. Orbit labels are useful context but are not a site-level guarantee.

GEO, LEO and other orbit claims

ITU reports describe a market moving from predominantly geostationary (GSO/GEO) services toward one that also includes non-geostationary (NGSO) constellations. The reports note lower latency for constellations than geostationary providers in the Brazil discussion, and describe GEO as useful for broad coverage while NGSO can suit performance-sensitive demand. Those are category-level observations. Ground congestion, gateway location, weather, routing and the specific terminal can materially change results.

“Due to the quasi “omni-presence” of satellite mobile coverage, additional connectivity can be provided to rural and remote areas, where building terrestrial networks is very costly and/or is not possible at all.”

Satellite can therefore extend connectivity where terrestrial construction is impractical, but the correct question is how your applications behave at this site and under this plan.

3. Understand data allowances and what happens after the allowance

Estimate traffic by application, device count and peak periods. Include software updates, camera footage, cloud synchronization, guest access and backups; these often consume more data than office browsing.

Questions every quote should answer

  • How much data is included each billing period?
  • Which traffic receives priority when the network is busy?
  • Is priority data pooled across terminals or assigned per terminal?
  • What happens when the priority allowance is exhausted: reduced speed, paid add-on blocks, throttling, suspension or another rule?
  • Can you buy additional data immediately, and at what unit price?
  • Are there separate rules for mobility, maritime or temporary use?

For example, Starlink’s business material describes preset priority-data plans and additional data blocks. It also separates fixed-site, land-mobility, maritime and aviation offerings. These are provider-specific features; plan names, allowances and prices differ by market and can change. Obtain the current terms for your location in writing.

4. Read the service commitment, priority and support terms

Marketing uptime language is not the same as a contractual service-level agreement (SLA). Request the complete SLA for the exact plan and identify what you can claim if service fails.

Check the SLA details

  • How is uptime measured, and over what interval?
  • Which outages, weather events, maintenance windows, congestion and customer-equipment failures are excluded?
  • What service credits or other remedies apply?
  • Does the SLA cover the access link only, or also gateways, routing and support response?
  • What are the escalation levels and target response and restoration times?

Confirm support hours, contact channels and whether an engineer can reach the site. Starlink states that its Priority Plans include network precedence, 24/7 prioritized support, a publicly routable IPv4 address and an SLA. That is a statement about those plans, not a guarantee for every satellite service or every country.

5. Make the site and installation part of the provider decision

A satellite link can fail at the installation stage if the terminal cannot see enough sky, the cable run is unsuitable or power is unstable.

Complete a physical survey

  • Find an unobstructed sky view at the proposed mounting point. Trees, ridges, buildings and future construction can block the link.
  • Choose a mount that can withstand local wind, snow, ice, salt spray, dust and temperature extremes.
  • Plan the cable route, penetration points, grounding and lightning protection.
  • Verify cable length limits, connector protection and maintenance access.
  • Measure available power, startup surge, continuous consumption and generator or battery runtime.
  • Provide backup power if communications must survive utility failure.

Starlink says its terminal needs a clear sky view and recommends using its app to assess a location. Treat that as an installation requirement for the cited terminal, then verify the exact model’s environmental and power specifications. A performance-oriented terminal may be designed for harsher environments, but applicability depends on the model and market.

6. Decide whether you need fixed, portable or in-motion service

Do not assume a fixed-site subscription can be moved between locations or used while a vehicle or vessel is moving. Ask for explicit permission for each operating mode.

  • Fixed site: best for a permanent facility with a dedicated mount and known coordinates.
  • Portable or temporary: requires rules for changing service addresses, transport, setup and activation.
  • Land mobility: requires hardware, plan and regulatory approval for operation on moving vehicles.
  • Maritime or aviation: has different antennas, environmental demands, coverage and licensing considerations.

List every location and mode in the quote. A plan that works at a headquarters may not authorize a field vehicle, vessel or aircraft.

7. Verify addressing, security and network integration

Satellite connectivity should fit the site’s existing network rather than become an isolated link that cannot be managed securely.

Technical questions

  • Does the service provide a publicly routable IPv4 address, static addressing or only carrier-grade NAT?
  • Can it pass your VPN, firewall, port-forwarding and remote-management requirements?
  • What IPv6 support, DNS behavior and inbound filtering are provided?
  • Can you place the terminal in bridge or bypass mode and use your own router?
  • What telemetry, logs and management interfaces are available?
  • Which encryption, authentication and security certifications apply to the service and terminal?

A public address may simplify inbound management, but it also increases exposure and must be protected by a firewall and access controls. A provider’s general security statement does not establish compliance with your organization’s requirements; have your security team review the exact service and architecture.

8. Compare total cost of ownership

Build a five-year or other realistic cost model instead of comparing monthly subscription prices alone.

  • Terminal and router
  • Mount, cable, grounding and weatherproofing
  • Professional installation or travel to the site
  • Power conditioning, batteries, generator fuel or solar capacity
  • Activation, taxes, regulatory fees and shipping
  • Recurring subscription and priority-data charges
  • Support, replacement hardware and maintenance visits
  • Backup circuit and failover equipment
  • Early-termination, equipment-return or relocation charges

A dated Brazil example of why local quotes matter

The ITU’s 2026 report describes market figures from early March 2025 in Brazil. They are historical examples, not current prices, global benchmarks or offers for your site.

Service example in the report Illustrative figure Qualification
Starlink terminal ZAR 2,400 (USD 432) Brazil market example, figures described as of early March 2025
Starlink monthly subscription ZAR 236 (USD 41.60) Brazil market example, figures described as of early March 2025
Hughes monthly subscription ZAR 179 (USD 31.54), 50 GB cap Brazil market example, March 2025
Hughes activation ZAR 129 (USD 22.73) Brazil market example, March 2025
Viasat monthly subscription ZAR 399 (USD 70.32), 200 GB cap Brazil market example, March 2025
Viasat activation ZAR 199 (USD 35.07) Brazil market example, March 2025

The same report cites average 2024 download speeds of 67 Mbit/s for Starlink and 10 Mbit/s for Hughes in Brazil, based on a presentation shared during an interview with ANATEL. The cited passage does not provide a complete test methodology, so these figures are not a controlled head-to-head test or a prediction for another location.

9. Use a repeatable procurement process

  1. Write the site brief: country, coordinates, fixed or mobile use, users, devices, applications, traffic estimate, peak periods, uptime target, power, obstructions, security and deployment date.
  2. Screen eligibility: ask each provider to confirm coverage, permitted use, licensing responsibilities and hardware availability for that exact site.
  3. Issue identical questions: require the same assumptions and response format from every provider.
  4. Request evidence: obtain plan terms, SLA, priority policy, post-cap behavior, support escalation, terminal specifications and a complete quote.
  5. Test critical workflows: measure voice, VPN, remote desktop, monitoring and uploads during representative busy periods whenever possible.
  6. Score whole-life value: weigh application performance, reliability, support, security and five-year cost rather than selecting the lowest monthly price.
  7. Plan failure recovery: document spare hardware, restart procedures, local access, support contacts and failover routing.
  8. Reconfirm before signing: verify prices, availability, licensing, hardware generation and terms immediately before purchase.

10. Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by headline download speed

Peak speed does not reveal latency, jitter, upload capacity or congestion. Require application-level evidence and test the workflows that keep the site operating.

Assuming a global footprint means local eligibility

Coverage maps do not settle licensing, address eligibility or permitted mobility. Obtain written confirmation for the coordinates and operating mode.

Ignoring the post-cap policy

A plan that fits an average month can fail during a camera upload, software rollout or emergency backup. Model peak usage and price additional data or reduced-speed operation.

Underestimating installation and power

A terminal with a blocked sky view, inadequate mount or short-lived battery is not a usable connection. Survey the site and budget the complete electrical and physical installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating one satellite link as an absolute uptime guarantee

Weather, power, hardware, gateway and terrestrial backhaul failures can interrupt service. If continuity is critical, evaluate a terrestrial or second-provider backup and design automatic failover; no source establishes that any satellite network alone guarantees uninterrupted service.

What to send with your quote request

Provide the provider with a concise, identical brief containing:

  • Country and exact coordinates
  • Permanent, temporary, land-mobile, maritime or aviation operation
  • Number of users, devices and high-bandwidth endpoints
  • Applications and tolerance for latency or interruption
  • Expected monthly traffic, peak traffic and upload volume
  • Required uptime, recovery time and support response
  • Sky obstructions, weather exposure, mounting and cable distance
  • Available power and backup duration
  • Public IP, VPN, firewall and compliance requirements
  • Budget, contract preference and deployment date

Ask the provider to return coverage and permitted-use confirmation, expected or committed performance, included and priority data, post-cap behavior, installation requirements, hardware warranty, SLA remedies, support path, one-time and recurring charges, contract term and exit or return conditions.

Bottom line: choose the service that fits the site, not the advertisement

A responsible shortlist starts with legal eligibility and physical feasibility, then tests workload performance, data policy, support, security and whole-life cost. Orbit and coverage are useful context, but only a quote and, ideally, a site pilot can show whether a particular service will support your remote operation. Recheck availability, licensing, prices, plan terms and hardware immediately before signing because provider offerings and market rules change.
