A used Magico A3 can be an excellent purchase, but the decision depends on the specific pair rather than the model name alone. Before paying, confirm that the speakers really are original A3s, inspect every driver and the aluminum cabinet, obtain purchase and service records, verify any remaining warranty with Magico or an authorized dealer, ensure your amplifier is comfortable with a 4-ohm load, and budget for moving two 110-pound cabinets safely.
Magico’s published documents identify the A3 as a large, three-way floorstanding speaker. They also contain a discrepancy in the stated low-frequency limit, so do not use one frequency-response number as a promise about every pair. Treat the following specifications as a starting point, then document the condition and provenance of the actual speakers you are buying.

Understand exactly what the original A3 is
The original A3 uses four drivers in a three-way layout: a 1.1-inch beryllium-dome tweeter, one 6-inch midrange driver and two 7-inch bass drivers. Magico describes a machined, anodized aluminum enclosure with internal bracing, carbon Nanographene cones, neodymium-based motor systems and an elliptical crossover. Those descriptions come from the manufacturer; they are not independent laboratory findings.

The size, weight and base hardware affect both the price you can reasonably pay and whether the pair can be delivered and installed safely in your room.

Published specifications—and the one you should not “correct”
| Specification | Magico-published information | How to use it when buying used |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Three-way, four drivers | Confirm the tweeter, midrange and two bass drivers are present on each speaker. |
| Tweeter | 1.1-inch beryllium dome | Inspect the dome under good light; do not touch it. |
| Midrange | One 6-inch driver | Look for dents, tears, rubbing or an obviously different replacement. |
| Bass section | Two 7-inch drivers | Check both drivers on both speakers, including their surrounds and cones. |
| Nominal impedance | 4 ohms | Verify that your amplifier is rated for a 4-ohm loudspeaker load. |
| Sensitivity | 88 dB | Use it with the impedance and room, not as a guarantee of loudness in your system. |
| Amplifier guidance | 50 watts RMS minimum; 300 watts RMS maximum in the launch materials and current product information | Check the amplifier maker’s 4-ohm guidance and avoid treating the figures as a guarantee for a particular room. |
| Dimensions | 44 in H × 11 in D × 9.25 in W (112 × 27 × 23 cm) | Measure doors, stairs, lifts and the intended position before arranging collection. |
| Weight | Approximately 110 lb (about 50 kg) per speaker | Plan for two-person or professional handling and suitable insurance. |
| Frequency response | 26 Hz–50 kHz on the product page; 22 Hz–50 kHz in the launch announcement and owner’s guide | Record which document applies to your pair; the sources do not explain the difference. |
The 22 Hz versus 26 Hz lower-limit figures are a documented source discrepancy. They may reflect different documentation or measurement conventions, but the available material does not establish why. Do not silently merge them, infer a hidden revision or use either figure to promise in-room bass. Ask the seller for the paperwork supplied with the pair and retain a copy.
Identify the pair before discussing price
Request a complete photo set
Ask for recent, high-resolution photographs of both speakers, not just a stock image or one front view. Each speaker should be shown from the front, rear, both sides, top and bottom where practical. Request close-ups of all four drivers on both cabinets, the rear terminals, the outrigger base, every spike and any labels or serial information.
Compare the driver arrangement and external form with Magico’s official A3 description. The available documentation confirms the model’s physical design, but it does not establish a serial-number authentication procedure. If the serial information, finish or driver layout is uncertain, ask Magico or an authorized dealer to advise before sending money.
Check what is included
Write down whether the sale includes the original outriggers, all four spikes per speaker, any supplied grilles, protective packaging, manuals and accessories. Missing hardware is not merely cosmetic: it can complicate leveling, placement and future resale. Ask the seller to identify every item shown in the photographs and to state in writing what will be in the shipment.

Inspect the cabinets, drivers and hardware
Cabinet and finish
In person, examine the aluminum cabinet under bright, angled light. Look for dents, deep scratches, finish damage, bent edges, impact marks and evidence that a cabinet has been opened or refinished. A small cosmetic mark may be acceptable at the right price; a deformed panel or damaged mounting point can affect fit, appearance and serviceability. Photograph defects before agreeing to a deal.
Drivers
Inspect the beryllium tweeter without touching its dome. Check the midrange and both bass drivers for dents, tears, creases, detached surrounds, foreign material and signs of rubbing. Compare the two speakers for matching driver appearance and fasteners. Ask directly whether any tweeter, midrange, woofer, crossover or cabinet work has been performed, who did it and when. A seller’s statement that no work was done is useful provenance, not proof that every internal component is original or fault-free.
Base, outriggers and spikes
Confirm that the four-point outrigger assemblies are straight, securely attached and free of cracks or stripped threads. Check that every spike is present and turns normally. Missing or damaged pieces should be treated as a specific cost and negotiation point rather than an afterthought.
If you can listen before buying
Use familiar recordings and listen to both speakers at ordinary levels. Switch the left and right channels if your system allows it; a fault that follows the speaker is more likely to be in that speaker than in the source or room. Listen for obvious differences in level, tonal balance, rattles, intermittent sounds, distortion or a driver that remains silent.

Keep the test controlled: use the same electronics, cables, source and volume for both speakers, and allow the seller to identify any room-related limitation. A listening session can reveal a gross mismatch, but it cannot prove the condition of the crossover, every voice coil, the enclosure seals or long-term reliability. Do not waive documentation and inspection merely because the pair sounds impressive for a few minutes.
Get provenance and service records in writing
Documents to request
- Original invoice or receipt showing the purchase date and selling dealer.
- The seller’s name and contact details, and whether the seller is the original owner.
- Any service invoices, replacement-driver records, crossover work or cabinet repairs.
- The owner’s guide and any product registration or warranty correspondence.
- A written list of included hardware, packaging and accessories.
Ask the seller to explain any gap between the purchase date and the current sale, especially if the pair has changed hands more than once. A consistent story, matching serial information and dated paperwork reduce uncertainty; they do not substitute for confirmation from the manufacturer or authorized channel.
Verify warranty eligibility instead of assuming it transfers
The A3 owner’s guide describes a five-year limited warranty that generally applies to the original owner. It also describes a remaining-term exception for used or trade-in units purchased through an authorized Magico dealer or distributor. That exception is conditional: the exact purchase route, original purchase date, receipt and current warranty status matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Ask the seller for the original receipt, purchase date and dealer or distributor name.
- Ask whether the pair was bought new, traded in or previously sold privately.
- Send the serial information and documentation to Magico or the relevant authorized dealer or distributor.
- Request confirmation of whether any warranty term remains and whether it applies to this transaction.
- Save the written response with your purchase records.
Do not add an assumed warranty value to the price until the authorized channel confirms it. The guide’s general rule and its used-unit exception do not determine the outcome for an undocumented private sale.

Match the A3 to an appropriate amplifier
Magico lists 4-ohm impedance and 88 dB sensitivity. Its launch materials state a minimum recommended amplifier power of 50 watts RMS and a maximum recommended power of 300 watts RMS; the current product information gives the same headline guidance. These are published specifications, not a guarantee that any amplifier will control the speakers well in your room.
Questions for your amplifier
- Does the manufacturer explicitly rate it for a 4-ohm load?
- Can it deliver its stated power continuously without overheating or entering protection?
- Does the manufacturer specify a safe operating range when both channels are driven?
- Are the amplifier’s output terminals and your speaker cables connected correctly and securely?
Do not choose solely by the wattage printed on a front panel. Conversely, do not assume that a high-power amplifier is automatically safe: clipping, faulty wiring or an unstable amplifier can damage a speaker. Follow the amplifier manufacturer’s operating instructions and the A3 documentation. If your amplifier’s 4-ohm capability is unclear, obtain a definitive answer before purchase.

Measure the route
Measure doorways, stair turns, lift interiors and the final listening position. The approximately 44-inch height and 110-pound weight of each cabinet make a “we will work it out later” plan risky. Ask how the speakers will be loaded, protected and secured, and whether the carrier has appropriate equipment and insurance.

Agree on packaging and responsibility
Confirm whether the original cartons, foam, pallets or custom packing are available. Establish who pays for packing, freight, stairs, delivery to the room, damage claims and return shipping if the speakers arrive damaged. Obtain photographs of the packed speakers before collection and inspect the cartons immediately on arrival. Note damage on the delivery record and photograph it before unpacking further.

Choose a realistic placement plan
Decide where each speaker will stand before delivery, including clearance for the outriggers and spikes, cable routing and safe access around the cabinets. The final position may require careful leveling; do not drag a 110-pound speaker across a finished floor or lift it by a driver, grille or terminal panel.
Compare two used A3 listings on the same axes
When several pairs are available, use a written comparison rather than choosing the cheapest asking price.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Identity | Photos, serial information, finish and whether the driver layout matches the original A3. |
| Condition | Cabinet marks, driver condition, terminal condition and any visible impact damage. |
| Service history | Dates, parts replaced, technician or dealer and supporting invoices. |
| Ownership and warranty | Original purchase date, receipt, seller history and written confirmation of any remaining eligibility. |
| Completeness | Outriggers, spikes, grilles, manuals and original packing. |
| Total delivered cost | Asking price plus packing, freight, insurance, stairs, taxes and any missing hardware. |
| Inspection opportunity | In-person listening and inspection, video call, or sight-unseen purchase. |
Current market listings and completed transaction prices are not established here, so there is no defensible used-market price range to quote. Compare each asking price with contemporaneous local listings and the documented total cost, not with the historical launch price alone.

Use the historical launch price correctly
Magico’s 2018 launch announcement listed a US suggested retail price of $9,800 per pair. That is a historical launch figure, not a current used-market valuation and not evidence of what a particular pair is worth today. Age, condition, service history, completeness, location and delivery costs can change the value substantially.
A practical purchase sequence
- Screen the listing. Reject listings that will not provide clear photographs, serial information or a written description of condition.
- Confirm identity. Match the four-driver layout, cabinet form and hardware with the official A3 description.
- Request records. Obtain the receipt, purchase date, dealer details and service paperwork before negotiating a final price.
- Inspect or arrange a live video inspection. Examine every driver, the cabinet, terminals, outriggers and spikes.
- Test both speakers if possible. Use familiar material at ordinary levels and note any channel-to-channel difference or noise.
- Check the amplifier. Confirm safe operation into a 4-ohm load and review the manufacturer’s power guidance.
- Verify warranty status. Ask Magico or an authorized dealer or distributor to confirm eligibility for the exact pair.
- Calculate delivered cost. Include packing, freight, insurance, access charges and replacement hardware.
- Set terms in writing. Record the serial information, condition, included items, payment terms, delivery responsibility and any return arrangement.
- Prepare the room and helpers. Measure the route, plan safe handling and have the placement ready before delivery.
Reasons to walk away or renegotiate
- The seller refuses to show all four drivers on both speakers or will not provide serial information.
- A tweeter dome, cone, surround, cabinet edge or outrigger is visibly damaged and the repair cost is unknown.
- Service work is acknowledged but undocumented, or the two speakers contain visibly mismatched parts.
- The seller claims a transferable warranty without a receipt or written confirmation from an authorized channel.
- Your amplifier’s 4-ohm suitability is uncertain.
- There is no safe, insured plan for moving and delivering two 110-pound cabinets.
- The price only makes sense if you ignore missing hardware, freight, insurance or possible repairs.
What a well-supported purchase looks like
Proceed when the pair’s identity is clear, both cabinets and all drivers have been inspected, the hardware is complete, the service history is credible, the amplifier match is documented, and the delivered cost still makes sense after accounting for risk. If warranty coverage matters, treat written confirmation from Magico or an authorized dealer or distributor as a prerequisite rather than a hoped-for benefit.
The original A3’s published specifications provide useful boundaries—4 ohms, 88 dB sensitivity, approximately 44 inches tall and about 110 pounds per speaker—but they cannot tell you whether a particular used pair was abused, repaired or transported poorly. The quality of the evidence attached to the specific pair should determine whether you buy.
