The best digital drilling platform is the one that improves a defined well-construction workflow with your existing rig, downhole, engineering and enterprise systems. “Digital drilling platform” is not a standardized product category: one offering may focus on well planning, another on real-time data and remote collaboration, and another on orchestration or automation. Compare workflow coverage, interoperability, data quality, deployment resilience, security, automation boundaries, measurable outcomes and total cost. Require each supplier to demonstrate those capabilities with representative data, then validate the claims in a scoped pilot against your own baseline.
Start by defining the workflow you need to improve
Before comparing screens or artificial-intelligence features, write down who will use the system and which decisions it must support. Typical users include well planners, drilling engineers, rig crews, remote-operations teams, geoscience and production specialists, IT administrators and enterprise data teams. Their requirements can be very different.

A planning suite should help create a well design, coordinate reviews, maintain the activity plan and carry approved changes into execution. A real-time operations product should collect rig and downhole feeds, put them in context, issue alerts and support remote decisions. An automation product may connect to control systems, execute approved procedures or provide edge operation when connectivity is intermittent. A data-management platform may concentrate on storage, search, standards and exchange rather than operational advice.
Ask every supplier to draw the boundary of the proposed system. Request a list of included modules, optional components, interfaces and excluded responsibilities. Do not treat a planning product, a real-time monitoring service and an automated control layer as interchangeable simply because each is marketed as a “digital well” solution.

Map the current process
- Document how a well plan is created, reviewed, approved, changed and handed to the rig.
- List the data sources used during drilling: rig control, MWD/LWD, mud logging, directional surveys, hydraulics, pressure, vibration, maintenance and safety systems.
- Identify where engineers investigate events, communicate recommendations, record decisions and produce reports.
- Record the enterprise repositories, historians and engineering applications that must receive data or results.
- Mark decisions that can be advisory, those requiring a human approval and those that may eventually be automated.
This process map becomes the reference for demonstrations and pilot acceptance criteria. It also exposes gaps that a broad feature checklist can hide.
Compare workflow coverage and boundaries
Use a capability matrix rather than a single “platform” score. A supplier should show the complete path from source data to user action, including what happens when an input is missing or a recommendation is rejected.
| Workflow area | Questions to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Well planning and design | Can users create alternatives, run engineering checks, manage approvals and preserve revisions? | A demonstration using your planning templates, engineering applications and approval roles. |
| Plan-to-execution handoff | How does the approved activity plan reach the rig, and how are changes synchronized? | Version history, change-control workflow and an example of a mid-well revision. |
| Live monitoring | Which real-time channels, events and contextual views are available? | A live or replayed feed from representative rig and downhole systems. |
| Advisory analytics | Does the system explain recommendations, show input data and record user decisions? | Alert logic, model documentation, confidence information and audit records. |
| Automation and orchestration | What can be executed automatically, what requires approval and how is control returned during a fault? | A safe test of the control boundary, interlocks, permissions and fallback behavior. |
| Data management | Can teams search, normalize, validate and export well-construction data? | Object-level mappings, quality flags, export formats and retention policy. |
Halliburton describes Digital Well Program as a planning and delivery suite, while its Digital Well Automation offering emphasizes well-plan orchestration, rig integration, contextual visualizations, configurable alarms, artificial-intelligence and machine-learning deployment and edge operation. Petrolink describes real-time ingestion, monitoring, analytics and remote collaboration. Those descriptions illustrate why the module boundary must be tested rather than inferred from a product name.

Protocol logos are only a starting point. Require a supplier to demonstrate the exact objects, versions and directions of exchange that your operation needs. Halliburton lists WITS, WITSML, OPC-UA, OPC-DA, ModBus, TCP, UDP and custom rig or original-equipment-manufacturer interfaces for Digital Well Automation. Petrolink describes WITSML, OPC, PI and ETP connectivity. A Baker Hughes Kantori search-result description emphasizes vendor-agnostic exchange and WITSML version conversion. These statements should become test cases, not assumptions.
Questions for each interface
- Which tags, channels, events, trajectories, surveys and documents are supported?
- Which WITSML versions and object types are read and written?
- Is the connection read-only, or can approved values and commands be written back?
- How are units, timestamps, depth references, channel names and well identifiers mapped?
- What happens when a source changes schema, stops transmitting or sends an out-of-range value?
- Who owns the connector, and what are the one-time and recurring integration charges?
- Can the supplier provide a repeatable test harness and logs for troubleshooting?
Bring a representative sample of rig, MWD/LWD, mud-logging and historian data to the demonstration. Ask the supplier to show a value from source to screen, alert, report and export, including the original timestamp and quality state. If the platform cannot expose that lineage, operators may have difficulty deciding whether an alert reflects a real event or a mapping error.
Evaluate data quality and operational context
A polished dashboard is not useful when measurements arrive late, use inconsistent units or are detached from the current well activity. Data quality must be evaluated as an operational function.

Minimum quality controls
- Detection and display of missing, delayed, duplicated or out-of-order samples.
- Unit normalization with the original unit preserved for audit.
- Time and measured-depth alignment across surface and downhole sources.
- Validation rules, range checks and explicit quality flags.
- Well, hole-section, bit-run and activity context attached to each event.
- Traceability from an alert or recommendation back to source measurements.
- History of corrections, manual overrides and user acknowledgements.
Petrolink describes real-time quality checks and validation. During procurement, ask the vendor to apply those checks to your own deliberately imperfect data: a delayed channel, a unit mismatch and a restarted connection. Observe whether the system flags the condition, suppresses unsafe recommendations and records the recovery.

Deployment architecture affects latency, resilience, support and jurisdiction. Establish where ingestion, storage, analytics, user access and control functions run. Possible patterns include a public cloud, a regional or sovereign cloud, an on-premises data center, an edge appliance at the wellsite or a hybrid arrangement.
Connectivity and failure tests
- Disconnect the rig from the wider network for a defined interval.
- Verify which displays, alarms, procedures and approved controls continue at the edge.
- Generate data while offline and confirm that buffering preserves timestamps and sequence.
- Restore connectivity and check duplicate handling, reconciliation and alert replay.
- Simulate a software update or edge-node restart and measure recovery time.
- Review disaster-recovery objectives, backup locations and the process for restoring a well session.
Halliburton says Digital Well Automation can deploy digital well operations capabilities natively at the wellsite when connectivity is an issue. That claim should be tested against your required functions and maximum acceptable data loss. In a separate deployment example, ADNOC said its Real-Time Operations Center was hosted in the company’s UAE cloud environment so critical information and workflows remained within the country. A similar arrangement may matter where national data-residency rules apply, but the architecture and contractual controls must be confirmed for your jurisdiction.
Examine security, governance and data residency
Request an architecture diagram and evidence appropriate to your threat model. A supplier’s statement that a product conforms to a standard is useful context, not a substitute for your own assessment. Halliburton states that Digital Well Automation conforms to ISA/IEC 62443; verify the scope, version, assessment method and components covered.
Security due-diligence checklist
- Identity federation, multi-factor authentication, service accounts and role-based permissions.
- Separation of rig, corporate, vendor-support and development networks.
- Encryption in transit and at rest, including edge caches and backups.
- Centralized logging, time synchronization and export of audit records.
- Patch cadence, vulnerability disclosure, penetration testing and software bill of materials availability.
- Incident notification times, investigation responsibilities and evidence preservation.
- Data retention, deletion, subcontractors, support access and administrator oversight.
- Physical and legal location of primary data, replicas, backups and telemetry.
Define which party controls operational data, derived models and annotations. Make support access time-limited and logged. If a supplier uses external model or cloud services, require disclosure of data flows and a prohibition on using your data for unrelated training unless expressly approved.
Separate dashboards, alarms, recommendations and control
Marketing language often groups analytics and automation together, but they carry different risks. A descriptive dashboard reports what happened. An alarm identifies a condition according to configured logic. A recommendation proposes an action. Closed-loop automation can issue commands or change a process without a person intervening.

Questions about analytics and alarms
- Can users inspect the rule, model version, input channels and threshold behind an alert?
- How are nuisance alarms measured, tuned, suppressed and escalated?
- What confidence, uncertainty or data-quality state accompanies a model output?
- How are models monitored for drift after a rig, basin, formation or tool change?
- What happens when a required channel is stale or unavailable?
- Are acknowledgements, overrides and recommended actions recorded with a user and timestamp?
Halliburton describes configurable alarms, real-time AI/ML solutions and integration with rig procedures and systems. Petrolink describes AI/ML-driven alerts. Feature presence does not establish accuracy or safe operation in your environment. Require a hazard review that defines human approval points, interlocks, authority to stop automation and the exact fail-safe state during bad data or lost communications.
Use outcome evidence without overgeneralizing it
Published results can help set pilot hypotheses, but they are not guarantees. Ask for the baseline, population, measurement method, time period and implementation conditions behind every number.
| Published claim | Attribution and qualification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 30–40% lower engineering effort | ADNOC, 2026, reported for its Real-Time Operations Center deployment. | Test engineering hours per rig against your own historical baseline. |
| Two to three times more rigs supported per engineer | ADNOC, 2026, reported for that deployment. | Measure workload, response quality and safety, not staffing alone. |
| Four to 12 hours faster incident response and one to two days of rig downtime avoided | ADNOC, 2026, described these as potential outcomes attributed to RTOC analysis. | Define incident categories and independently time detection, decision and recovery. |
| Up to 80% less well-program design time | Halliburton product-page claim, accessed in 2026; vendor-stated and undated. | Measure design-cycle time for comparable wells, including review and rework. |
| Up to 20% lower well-construction cost | Halliburton product-page claim, accessed in 2026; vendor-stated and undated. | Require a transparent cost model and exclude unrelated changes. |
ADNOC said its deployment covered a fleet of more than 120 rigs. Musabbeh Al Kaabi, ADNOC’s Upstream CEO, said the center creates value by embedding AI in drilling operations and helping teams make faster decisions. Rakesh Jaggi of SLB said DrillOps turns real-time drilling data into operational intelligence. Both statements are company representatives’ descriptions in an ADNOC announcement dated August 4, 2026, not independent assessments. Petrolink materials mention an “up to 60 percent” increase in rate of penetration, but the cited explainer does not identify an original publisher or year for the underlying figure; do not treat it as an independently verified statistic.
Plan a scoped pilot with measurable acceptance criteria
A pilot should answer operational questions, not merely demonstrate a successful login. Select one or two representative wells, a defined set of feeds and a limited user group. Keep the duration long enough to capture normal operations, planned changes and at least one connectivity or data-quality event.
- Set the baseline. Record engineering hours per rig, reporting-cycle time, alert response, nonproductive time, data availability, integration effort and user adoption before deployment.
- Define the use cases. Choose specific workflows such as plan revision, stuck-pipe detection, remote incident response or daily reporting.
- Agree data and safety boundaries. List channels, permitted write-back, approval roles, test environments and a prohibition on uncontrolled commands.
- Instrument the pilot. Capture timestamps for data arrival, alert generation, acknowledgement, decision and outcome.
- Test adverse conditions. Inject stale data, disconnect connectivity, restart an edge component and revoke a user role.
- Review results with operators. Assess false alarms, explainability, workload, training burden and whether recommendations changed decisions.
- Decide using pre-agreed gates. Specify the minimum data completeness, response improvement, availability, security findings and integration effort required to proceed.
Include migration, configuration, interfaces, training and support in the pilot budget. A platform that performs well but requires extensive manual rework may not produce a net benefit.
Calculate total cost, not just license price

Recognize common failure modes before signing
Buying a broad platform for a narrow problem
If the primary issue is delayed rig data, a planning suite may not solve it. Conversely, a monitoring dashboard will not replace engineering approval and design controls. Tie every purchase requirement to a measurable workflow outcome.
Assuming protocol support means plug-and-play integration
Two systems can both support WITSML or OPC while disagreeing on object types, units, naming and write-back. Make mappings and error handling contractual deliverables.
Ignoring stale or ambiguous data
An alert built on a delayed channel can be worse than no alert. Require visible freshness, quality states and suppression rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Automating before governance is ready
Start with read-only monitoring and advisory recommendations where risk is high. Expand authority only after hazard analysis, training, testing and clear override procedures.
Best Value
Using a headline result as a business case
Vendor and operator figures are context-dependent. Recalculate benefits using your wells, staffing, downtime costs and implementation effort.
Leaving resilience and residency until the end
Retrofitting edge capability, regional hosting or network segmentation can alter architecture and price. Set these requirements before demonstrations.
Build a decision scorecard
Score each proposal only after the same scripted demonstration and pilot evidence. Weight categories according to operational risk rather than giving every feature equal importance.

- Workflow fit: coverage of the selected planning, execution, monitoring and reporting processes.
- Interoperability: verified interfaces, mappings, data lineage and write-back behavior.
- Data quality: freshness, validation, context, auditability and recovery from bad inputs.
- Resilience: edge operation, buffering, reconciliation, recovery and support during outages.
- Security and governance: identity, segmentation, logging, vulnerability management and residency.
- Analytics and automation safety: explainability, alarm management, human approval and fail-safe behavior.
- Usability and adoption: role-specific views, training time, mobile or remote access and workload impact.
- Evidence and economics: pilot results, transparent assumptions, integration effort and five-year total cost.
Reject or renegotiate a proposal when a high-risk requirement is marked “roadmap,” “custom” or “to be confirmed” without a dated acceptance test. The final contract should identify interfaces, service levels, security controls, data ownership, change management, exit support and the metrics used to judge value.
Bottom line for buyers
Compare digital drilling platforms as workflow systems, not as collections of fashionable features. Define the users and decisions first; verify integration against real rig and enterprise systems; test data quality, edge resilience, security and residency; distinguish alerts and recommendations from control; and measure results in a scoped pilot. Treat the published claims from ADNOC, Halliburton and Petrolink as hypotheses tied to their stated environments, not promises for a new deployment. A platform earns its place when it produces reliable, traceable information and safer, faster decisions at a total cost your operation can sustain.
