Consolidated revenue by itself is not enough: businesses serving construction, industrial maintenance, and consumer markets can have very different demand cycles and economics.
Start with the products, customers, and end markets
Companies described as coatings or sealants businesses may have very different portfolios. One may focus on industrial protective coatings, another on roofing systems or building-envelope sealants, and another on consumer paints and caulks. Compare product families, applications, and the customers who specify, distribute, install, or ultimately use them.

RPM International’s FY2026 Form 10-K describes subsidiaries that make and sell specialty paints, infrastructure rehabilitation and repair products, protective coatings, roofing systems, sealants, and adhesives for construction, industrial, specialty, and consumer markets. The filing is the company’s own description, not an independent assessment. RPM International Inc., FY2026 Form 10-K.
For each company, distinguish maintenance and repair demand from new construction, industrial activity from consumer spending, and recurring applications from project-driven work. These differences can affect cyclicality, pricing, and margins. Do not assume a company with a broad product catalog is automatically diversified: determine how much revenue actually comes from each market and customer type.
#1 Best Overall
- CERAMIC COATING FOR CARS: Delivers an extremely glossy, mirror-like finish on clean paint. Use as a standalone paint sealant or as a quick ceramic topper that deepens color and adds slickness. Not a one-step miracle coating and not a paint corrector
- 50-WASH CERAMIC PROTECTION: A true ceramic paint sealant, tested to a 50-wash durability rating for months of protection. Seals and shields your paint so it stays slick and beads water long after ordinary spray waxes have washed off
- CERAMIC SPRAY WAX ALTERNATIVE, QUICK AND EASY: Wash and dry first, then spray a thin, even coat onto one panel at a time and buff immediately. A thin, even coat ensures optimal bonding and maximum gloss
- EXTREMELY HYDROPHOBIC: True ceramic technology repels water, road grime, mud, and dirt, so your car stays cleaner between washes and rinses clean faster. Use on cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, boats, and motorcycles
- ULTRA SLICK SURFACE: An extremely smooth finish that is safe for all paint colors and clear coats, so the surface stays slick to the touch and dirt has less to grab onto between washes
Compare segment mix and segment economics
Read segment sales, growth, and operating profitability alongside consolidated results. A fast-growing or high-margin business can be obscured by slower performance elsewhere; acquisitions and transfers between segments can also make year-to-year comparisons misleading.
RPM realigned its reporting structure effective June 1, 2025, moving from four reportable segments to three. Its approximate FY2026 net-sales mix was:
| RPM reportable group | Approximate share of FY2026 net sales | Illustrative activities described by RPM |
|---|---|---|
| Construction Products Group (CPG) | 39% | Construction services and products, including sealants and adhesives, roofing, concrete repair, building-envelope solutions, weatherproofing, and restoration services. |
| Performance Coatings Group (PCG) | 27% | High-performance flooring, corrosion-control and fireproofing coatings, infrastructure repair, factory-applied industrial coatings, and related specialty lines. |
| Consumer | 34% | Rust-preventative, special-purpose, and decorative paints; caulks, sealants, primers, cleaners, and woodcare products. |
Shares are approximate and reported by RPM International for fiscal 2026; they describe sales mix, not segment profitability or organic growth. RPM FY2026 Form 10-K.

- Conformal Coating for Electronics: The insulation conformal coating sealant provides sealing and insulation functions for electronic components, resisting moisture, dust and humidity, protecting circuits and ensuring stable operation
- Reliable Barrier: After curing, the silicone conformal coating forms a flexible, invisible protective layer on the surface, which is waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and wear-resistant, extending the life of components
- Insulation Reinforcement: The insulation conformal coating fits the components tightly without cracking, is resistant to high and low temperatures, and providing insulation protection for components during temperature fluctuations to achieve long-term electronic stability
- Simple Operation: After cleaning the surface, apply the conformal coating for electronics evenly to the part that needs to be sealed or bonded, and wait for it to cure. (5-8 hours for the initial stage, 24 hours for full curing)
- Widely Used: Insulation conformal coating are commonly used in circuit boards, electronic components, control boards, etc., and have good adhesion to most metal and non-metal materials, making them an ideal partner for repair and electronics enthusiasts
RPM’s FY2025 filing showed a different four-segment presentation: approximately 38% CPG, 20% PCG, 33% Consumer, and 9% Specialty Products Group. RPM transferred businesses among groups effective June 1, 2025, so these older percentages should not be read as directly comparable organic shifts. Reconcile the reorganization and any acquisitions before interpreting trends. RPM FY2025 Form 10-K.
For each peer, compare several years of segment sales growth and operating margin using consistent definitions and periods. Separate reported growth from organic growth and acquired contributions where the company provides them. If a company changes its segment definitions, use restated or otherwise reconciled figures when available rather than treating a new label as a like-for-like business.
Check customers, channels, and geographic exposure
Customer concentration can matter even when a business sells into multiple end markets. RPM disclosed that its largest customer represented 20% of Consumer segment net sales in fiscal 2026. That is a segment-level share, not 20% of RPM’s total company sales. RPM FY2026 Form 10-K.

- UNSURPASSED SLICKNESS – You simply have to touch it to believe how slick this finish is.
- MAXIMUM GLOSS AND SHINE – Hands down the highest level of gloss and shine you will ever experience. Achieve mirror-like results in a simple application, right in your own driveway.
- QUICK AND EASY TO APPLY - Simply wash and dry your vehicle as you normally would. Then evenly spray a light coat directly to a panel or small area of your vehicle., then, just lightly buff the coating to an incredible shine! It really doesn't get any easier than this!
Compare what each company discloses about major customers and how products reach buyers: direct sales, distributors, contractors, retailers, or other channels. Assess whether a few customers or intermediaries could materially affect orders, pricing, or access to end users. Disclosures may not be identical across companies, so avoid treating an undisclosed figure as evidence of no concentration.

RPM reported net sales of $7.9 billion for fiscal 2026, marketed products in approximately 167 countries and territories, and operated manufacturing facilities at approximately 120 locations as of May 31, 2026. These are company-reported scale measures, not proof of market share or superior performance. RPM FY2026 Form 10-K.
For peers, examine the split between domestic and international sales, manufacturing footprint, sourcing, and exposure to currency movements or local conditions. Geographic breadth may diversify revenue, but it can also add operational complexity. Compare the actual footprint and financial contribution rather than relying on a count of markets alone.

Evaluate financial quality, not just growth
Growth is more useful when it translates into durable earnings and cash. Compare companies over matching periods and on the same accounting basis, distinguishing reported from adjusted measures. Useful items include:
- Organic and acquired sales growth, with acquisitions and divestitures identified where disclosed.
- Gross and operating margins, including segment trends and the effect of changes in business mix.
- Cash from operations, capital spending, and cash conversion across multiple years.
- Debt, liquidity, and the company’s capacity to fund investment, obligations, and shareholder returns.
- Returns on capital, interpreted alongside acquisition activity and investment needs.
A single year can be distorted by acquisitions, integration costs, restructuring, unusual demand, or changes in raw-material and operating costs. Use multi-year patterns and read the company’s reconciliation of adjusted results rather than assuming an adjusted figure is interchangeable with a reported one.

Compare how management directs capital among acquisitions, integration, research and development, capacity investment, dividends, and repurchases. Consider whether the stated priorities are visible in subsequent spending and financial outcomes. Acquisition-led growth, for example, should be evaluated together with integration progress, cash requirements, and changes in margins—not sales growth alone.

Use each company’s filings and results to test strategic claims against performance. The available RPM-specific figures establish its business structure and selected scale and concentration measures; they do not establish a current peer ranking, comparative profitability, or whether RPM or another company is attractively valued. Investment analysis also requires current valuation measures and up-to-date information for each selected peer.
Compare risks company by company
Review the risks disclosed by each business and consider their possible financial materiality. Relevant areas for coatings and sealants companies can include:
- Raw-material, energy, and other operating-cost exposure.
- Environmental, product, and other regulation, as well as litigation.
- Competition and changes in construction, industrial, or consumer demand.
- Customer or channel concentration.
- Acquisition integration and the operational complexity of a broad footprint.
These are comparison prompts, not evidence that every company has the same exposure or that a risk has had a particular financial effect. Use each company’s own disclosures to identify what is specific, material, and changing.

Quick Recap
Keep the comparison like for like
- Choose comparable periods. Use the same fiscal years or clearly align differing year-ends, and note material acquisitions or disposals.
- Match definitions. Reconcile segment reorganizations and distinguish reported, organic, and adjusted measures.
- Separate scale from quality. Revenue, number of markets, and facility counts describe size or reach; they do not establish market share, profitability, or resilience.
- Use comparable evidence. Where a figure or disclosure is not available on a comparable basis, state that limitation instead of filling the gap with an assumption.
