What to Check When Sourcing MLCCs During a Capacity Shortage

Do not make a buying decision from the phrase “MLCC shortage” alone. The useful question is: What specifications are you actually buying, and are those specifications exposed to the tightest supply? Lock the complete electrical, mechanical and application requirement; check capacitance under real bias and temperature; verify qualification such as AEC-Q200 where required; then compare dated, part-number-specific supply commitments. Market reports in June and July 2026 describe pressure concentrated in particular high-capacitance, high-temperature-resistant parts rather than a uniform shortage of every ceramic capacitor.

Is there really an MLCC shortage?

There can be tight supply, but “MLCC shortage” is too broad to guide a purchase. TrendForce’s June 17, 2026 analysis connected the strongest demand to compact, high-capacitance, high-temperature-resistant parts used on AI accelerator platforms. It warned that capacity expansion was lagging demand growth and identified a risk of structural shortages in the second half of 2026. Its July 6 report described different conditions by market segment, including pressure on high-end parts and price increases for mainstream X5R consumer parts in China.

Those observations are dated market research and a forecast, not proof that your exact manufacturer part number is unavailable. Region, distributor inventory, customer allocation, package size, dielectric and voltage rating can produce very different outcomes. A general lead-time headline should trigger a part-specific check, not an automatic redesign.

Indicator Reported value How to use it
High-capacitance X6S lead times Extended from eight weeks to as long as 20 weeks in TrendForce’s June 17, 2026 report Ask whether the quoted part is in this exposed class and obtain a dated commitment for your quantity.
Murata late-June 2026 book-to-bill ratio 1.30 Signals demand exceeding shipments in the cited period; it does not establish stock for an individual part.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics late-June 2026 book-to-bill ratio 1.31 Use as an industry-pressure indicator, not as a distributor availability figure.
Taiyo Yuden late-June 2026 book-to-bill ratio 1.25 Shows the same distinction between market demand and your specific line item.
Overall MLCC industry late-June 2026 book-to-bill ratio 1.04 Supports a tighter market overall while leaving individual families and regions variable.
Murata first-quarter 2026 orders-to-backlog ratio 1.27 Another market indicator cited by TrendForce, not a promise of delivery.

TrendForce also reported that leading customers with long-term supply agreements were expected to receive priority allocation. That expectation matters if your company has no allocation agreement: a distributor’s nominal “lead time” may not equal a firm ship date.

Start with an exact requirement record

Every line item should have a requirement record before anyone proposes an alternate. A capacitance-only description is not sufficient because MLCC behavior and qualification depend on the complete construction and its use.

Record the electrical specification

  • Manufacturer and full manufacturer part number, if an approved source already exists.
  • Nominal capacitance and tolerance.
  • Rated voltage, including the required derating at the circuit’s maximum DC voltage.
  • Dielectric type, such as X5R or X6S, and its temperature characteristics.
  • Operating temperature range and any circuit-specific temperature limits.
  • Parameters that affect the circuit beyond nominal capacitance, such as leakage, dissipation, impedance or ripple-current behavior where applicable.

Record the mechanical and assembly specification

  • Case size and dimensions, for example 0402 or 0805.
  • Termination finish, electrode system and any restrictions imposed by the board or assembly process.
  • Land pattern, height and clearance requirements.
  • Reflow, soldering, flex-crack and board-bending constraints in the product assembly specification.

Record the application and acceptance rules

  • Whether the circuit is consumer, industrial, medical, aerospace or automotive.
  • Required standards and customer approvals, including AEC-Q200 when an automotive program demands it.
  • Approved manufacturer list, source-country restrictions, traceability requirements and date-code limits.
  • Permitted electrical or mechanical variation for an alternate, with the design authority identified for approval.

These limits come from your product design and governing quality requirements. A supplier cannot infer them from a similar-looking capacitor, and a distributor’s substitute suggestion is not an engineering approval.

Check capacitance under actual operating conditions

High-dielectric MLCCs can lose effective capacitance when DC voltage is applied. The value printed in a catalog is a nominal value measured under defined conditions; it may not be the capacitance available in your circuit at its operating bias and temperature. Two parts marked with the same capacitance and voltage can therefore provide different performance.

Use manufacturer data, not the marking alone

  1. Set the circuit’s maximum, nominal and minimum DC bias, operating temperature and frequency conditions.
  2. Read the candidate manufacturer’s current datasheet, characteristic curves and approval sheet.
  3. Determine effective capacitance at the worst relevant bias and temperature, including tolerance and aging assumptions required by the design.
  4. Recheck ripple, impedance, self-resonance, leakage and mechanical reliability requirements where those parameters matter.
  5. Document the result against the original requirement before releasing the alternate for layout or purchasing.

Murata’s SimSurfing part-selection tool explicitly supports searches that consider applied DC bias. A tool result is useful only when its selected conditions match your design and the underlying product documentation is current. Save the datasheet and approval-sheet revision used for the decision so a later specification change does not silently invalidate the qualification.

Confirm application qualification, especially AEC-Q200

An automotive label, a similar series name or a capacitor that appears in an automotive circuit is not proof of AEC-Q200 qualification. Verify the exact series and part number in current manufacturer documentation.

What Murata’s series comparison shows

Murata identifies its RCE and RHE families as AEC-Q200-compliant and distinguishes the RDE series as not AEC-Q200-compliant. Its FAQ advises that “for applications requiring products that meet the AEC-Q200 standard, make sure to use RCE series MLCCs.” That statement is a series-level comparison, not a substitute for checking the individual specification or approval sheet.

Murata also cautions that common test conditions can differ by product and that the individual specification or approval sheet should be consulted. Confirm the stated test conditions, quality-management information, temperature range, termination construction and any customer-specific qualification plan. If your customer requires additional testing beyond AEC-Q200, list those tests separately rather than assuming the standard covers them.

Use dated product announcements correctly

Murata announced mass production beginning in 2026 for seven AEC-Q200-qualified automotive MLCCs: five 2.5–4 V GCM parts aimed at ADAS and autonomous-driving IC peripheral circuits, and two 25 V parts for vehicle power lines. This demonstrates the type of product range a manufacturer may offer; it does not prove stock, equivalence to your design or approval for your customer’s bill of materials.

Verify the supply offer for the exact part number

Ask for a written, dated offer that identifies the manufacturer part number exactly as it appears on the manufacturer’s documentation. “10-week lead time” without a quantity, source and commitment date is not a supply plan.

Questions to put on every quote

  1. What exact manufacturer part number, revision and packaging quantity are being quoted?
  2. How many pieces are physically on hand, where are they located, and how many are already committed?
  3. For future production, what is the committed ship date or lead-time window, and is it acknowledged by the manufacturer or only estimated by the seller?
  4. Is the line item allocated? If so, what allocation quantity and release schedule apply to your account?
  5. What is the quote validity period, unit price by quantity break, minimum order and packaging requirement?
  6. What deposit, cancellation, reschedule, expedite or price-adjustment terms apply?
  7. Can the seller document an authorized supply route and provide the lot, date-code and certificate information required by your quality system?

TrendForce’s June report cited high-capacitance X6S lead times reaching as long as 20 weeks and said customers with established long-term agreements were expected to receive priority allocation. Treat those as market observations, then obtain a current commitment for your own part, quantity and destination. Reconfirm before issuing a non-cancellable purchase order because market indicators do not verify live inventory.

Compare alternates on the same engineering and commercial axes

An alternate is acceptable only when it clears every required gate. Compare candidates using one worksheet so a lower price or shorter apparent lead time cannot hide a qualification gap.

Electrical fit

  • Nominal and effective capacitance at the required DC bias and temperature.
  • Voltage rating and derating margin.
  • Dielectric, tolerance, aging and temperature behavior.
  • Impedance, ripple, leakage and frequency response required by the circuit.

Mechanical and process fit

  • Case dimensions, height, termination and land-pattern compatibility.
  • Board-flex, soldering, reflow and assembly reliability requirements.
  • Any layout or stencil change that would turn a nominal drop-in replacement into a redesign.

Qualification and lifecycle fit

  • Exact application approval and standard designation.
  • Current datasheet, approval-sheet revision and product status.
  • Customer qualification, validation samples and test time needed before production release.
  • Obsolescence, change-notification and second-source policy where your program requires them.

Supply and commercial fit

  • Available quantity, committed ship date, allocation terms and repeatability of supply.
  • Unit price, price validity, minimum order and cancellation or reschedule terms.
  • Total cost of qualification, board changes, inventory carrying cost and possible scrap—not just the quoted unit price.
  • Manufacturer identity, authorized route and traceability documents appropriate to your quality system.

If a candidate fails one mandatory gate, keep it as a contingency rather than silently substituting it. Engineering should approve any permitted variation before purchasing commits to it.

Buying allocated, excess or broker-held stock

Allocated stock can protect a build only when the allocation is real, documented and tied to your exact part number. Ask whether the quantity is reserved for your account or merely visible in a seller’s system. Request the expected release date, cancellation terms and evidence that the seller can ship the stated quantity.

Excess stock can be useful for prototypes or a controlled bridge, but it carries additional identity and condition risk. Require the documentation your quality system calls for, such as manufacturer labeling, lot and date-code information, packaging condition and inspection records. Do not treat a generic capacitor assortment as production evidence: it may help bench experimentation, but it does not demonstrate qualification, source traceability or suitability for your design.

Where authenticity or storage history cannot be established, quarantine the material and involve quality engineering before it reaches a production line. No independent counterfeit-screening procedure is established by the market and manufacturer information summarized here, so your organization’s approved incoming-inspection process remains the governing control.

Use a staged decision workflow

  1. Freeze the requirement: create the complete electrical, mechanical, environmental and application record for each line item.
  2. Identify exposure: ask suppliers whether that exact dielectric, capacitance, voltage and case-size family is affected, rather than asking whether “MLCCs” are short.
  3. Screen behavior: calculate effective capacitance and other circuit parameters at real bias, temperature and frequency.
  4. Screen qualification: verify the exact part’s standard designation, approval sheet, product status and customer requirements.
  5. Request comparable offers: obtain quantity, location, ship date, allocation, validity and commercial terms in writing.
  6. Approve the alternate: record engineering sign-off, sample or validation testing and the document revisions used.
  7. Release and monitor: confirm lot documentation at receipt and recheck supply commitments before each major build.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The capacitance and case size match, so it is a drop-in.”

Correction: compare dielectric, voltage, tolerance and effective capacitance under bias and temperature. Then check termination, land pattern and assembly reliability.

“The market is short, so any available value is worth buying.”

Correction: preserve the requirement record and buy only material that clears mandatory electrical, mechanical and qualification gates. A fast shipment that fails validation is not supply security.

“Automotive use means AEC-Q200.”

Correction: verify the exact series and part number in the current manufacturer documentation. Murata’s distinction between RCE/RHE and RDE illustrates why a family-level assumption is unsafe.

“A distributor’s lead time is a commitment.”

Correction: ask whether the quantity is on hand, allocated or future production, and require a dated ship commitment and quote validity.

“A market ratio proves my part is unavailable.”

Correction: use book-to-bill and orders-to-backlog figures to understand pressure, then obtain live, part-specific information from the authorized supply route.
