What to Check When Migrating an AI Model From Nvidia CUDA to Huawei Ascend

A CUDA-to-Ascend migration succeeds or fails on compatibility and verification, not on a global search-and-replace. First align the Ascend accelerator, driver, firmware, CANN, TorchNPU, PyTorch and Python versions. Then replace device and runtime assumptions, prove a small operation works, audit unsupported operators and custom extensions, and only after that tune Triton kernels and measure the complete model.

No universal package tuple or performance result applies to every Ascend chip and model. The checks below give you a repeatable path while keeping version, hardware and workload qualifications attached to every decision.

1. Define the migration boundary before changing code

Write down what is moving and what is staying. A training job, an inference service and an exported deployment can exercise different operators, precision modes and synchronization paths even when they use the same model class.

  • Record the current Python and PyTorch versions, CUDA-dependent packages, custom C++/CUDA extensions, model commit, checkpoint format and tokenizer or preprocessing code.
  • Record whether the workload is training, evaluation, batch inference, streaming inference or export, together with batch size, sequence length, image dimensions and dynamic-shape behavior.
  • Identify the exact Ascend accelerator, host operating system, container base image and deployment runtime. “Ascend” is a hardware family, not one interchangeable target.
  • List every place that discovers a GPU, creates a CUDA stream or event, calls torch.cuda, selects a device, or assumes CUDA-specific memory behavior.

This inventory becomes your comparison baseline. Preserve a known-good CUDA run and representative inputs so that a later mismatch can be attributed to software, numerical precision or the port itself rather than to changed data.

2. Treat compatibility as one coordinated stack

Do not choose TorchNPU, PyTorch, CANN, Python, driver and firmware independently. The official TorchNPU version-matching matrix ties these components together and distinguishes a TorchNPU product release from the version of the torch_npu package you install. A .postN suffix is a package release suffix; it is not a conversion to a TorchNPU product version.

The matrix page accessed October 13, 2026 lists this recommended combination at the time:

Component Listed combination Qualification
TorchNPU package 2.12.0 Recommended pairing shown on the matrix at access time
PyTorch 2.12.0 Paired with the TorchNPU package above
CANN 9.1.0 Must also match the selected hardware and driver/firmware
Python 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13 or 3.14 Supported range shown for that combination

The active table also maps TorchNPU 26.1.1 to multiple PyTorch package versions against CANN 9.1.X. That is a reminder to read the row for your exact package and CANN release rather than inferring compatibility from a similar-looking number. Recheck the live matrix for the intended accelerator before installation because release tables change.

Driver and firmware matching is hardware- and CANN-dependent. A package set that imports successfully on one Ascend model can still fail on another if the device firmware or driver is outside the supported combination. Capture those versions in your deployment manifest.

3. Build and initialize the Ascend environment

Install from the matrix row, not from the newest individual package

Select the matrix row that covers your accelerator, operating system and desired Python version. Follow the installation instructions for that row, including the matching CANN toolkit, driver and firmware. Avoid upgrading PyTorch or Python afterward unless the same matrix explicitly lists the result.

Source the CANN environment

The Ascend PyTorch adapter repository uses this example initialization command:

source /usr/local/Ascend/cann/set_env.sh

Your installation may place the script elsewhere, so modify the path to the actual CANN installation. Source it in the shell, container entrypoint or service unit that launches the model; sourcing it only in an interactive setup shell will not configure a later process.

Run a smoke test before loading the model

Import torch_npu explicitly. Auto-registration makes the import optional starting with TorchNPU 2.5.1, but the project recommends retaining it as a reliable device-initialization step. Then exercise a small matrix multiplication:

import torch
import torch_npu

a = torch.randn(4, 4).npu()
b = torch.randn(4, 4).npu()
c = a @ b
print(c.device)
print(c.shape)

The expected result is a successful operation whose tensors report an NPU device. If this fails, stop and fix the environment before debugging model code; otherwise you risk attributing a driver, firmware or library problem to an operator in the model.

4. Convert ordinary PyTorch device code carefully

For operators supported by your selected release, common placement patterns move from CUDA to NPU as follows:

Search the complete repository, including tests, callbacks and data-loader utilities. A model can appear converted while a loss function, metric, checkpoint loader or temporary tensor still lands on CUDA or the CPU.

5. Audit CUDA runtime assumptions instead of renaming them

Direct calls such as torch.cuda.* often encode behavior rather than merely a device name. Inspect each use of streams, events, synchronization, device counts, current-device queries, memory statistics and GPU-only assertions.

  • Streams and events: determine whether the code needs explicit ordering or timing on the NPU path. Do not assume CUDA stream and event objects have identical semantics.
  • Synchronization: remove or replace synchronization only after confirming the dependency it protected. The Triton migration guidance notes that some synchronization logic can be replaced or removed, but the correct choice depends on the operation.
  • Device discovery: replace checks that assert a CUDA GPU exists with the availability and device-selection mechanism documented for the selected TorchNPU release. GPU-only discovery assertions can sometimes be deleted when they have no functional purpose.
  • Memory and transfer flags: review pinned-memory, asynchronous-copy and allocator assumptions. Keep an explicit record of which transfers are required so that an apparent performance issue is not caused by accidental CPU round trips.

Keep runtime abstraction in one module where possible. A small device utility makes it easier to test CPU, CUDA and NPU paths without scattering conditional logic through model layers.

6. Check operator and extension coverage

Run the model’s standard PyTorch operators on the target stack before porting custom kernels. The compatibility page and adapter documentation do not provide an exhaustive support matrix for every model, extension or library, so operator support remains a model-specific check against the documentation for your chosen release.

Pay special attention to custom CUDA or C++ extensions, fused attention implementations, quantization libraries, sparse operations, distributed collectives and export plugins. A package may import while one rarely used training branch fails at runtime. Exercise the complete path you intend to deploy, including checkpoint restore, validation, error handling and shutdown.

7. Migrate Triton kernels in a correctness-first sequence

Custom Triton code is not a mechanical device-string replacement. The official Triton migration guide recommends separating interface changes from kernel tuning.

  1. Move the Python-side interface. Put test tensors on npu, update device and runtime calls, and remove assumptions that only a GPU can be discovered.
  2. Keep the kernel body unchanged initially. Compile it and check numerical correctness with NPU tensors before changing scheduling or tiling. This isolates interface problems from algorithmic changes.
  3. Review the launch grid and work allocation. Map the workload to the Ascend AI Core and Vector Core structure. The guide favors 1D grids in many cases and advises considering different core counts for vector-only operators versus operators that use tl.dot.
  4. Check addresses and boundaries. Verify memory alignment, masks and bounds for every load and store. Confirm that on-chip buffers can hold the tiles selected by the kernel.
  5. Check types. Review supported integer and index dtypes, accumulator precision and output dtype. Do not assume a CUDA-supported index type is accepted by the NPU backend.
  6. Tune dot products. For tl.dot, examine M, N and K tile sizes and the accumulator/output dtype. Long sequences, large hidden sizes and large K dimensions often require tiling that controls both data movement and compute per step.

Alignment and grid limits stated by the guide

Constraint Value Applies to
Memory alignment 32 bytes Vector operators
Memory alignment 512 bytes Cube-vector fused operators
coreDim upper bound 65,535 Kernel core-dimension configuration

These are implementation constraints stated in that migration guide, not universal specifications for every Ascend chip. Check the guide and release documentation for the backend version you are actually using.

8. Validate the port before optimizing it

Use the same inputs, preprocessing and checkpoint on both backends wherever practical. Compare more than one successful batch: migration bugs often appear only at a boundary shape, a masked position or a rare dtype.

Axis What to measure Useful test cases
Correctness Outputs, gradients, loss and task metrics within model-appropriate tolerances Typical inputs, boundary dimensions, masks, padding, empty or short sequences and worst-case shapes
Coverage Operators, custom extensions, precision modes and complete training/inference branches Checkpoint load, validation, export, retries and error paths
Performance Throughput, latency, memory use, compilation/startup cost and scaling Production batch and sequence sizes, warm and cold starts, single-device and intended multi-device runs
Operational fit Version stability, device availability, deployment behavior and maintenance burden Clean container, service restart, rolling deployment and upgrade rehearsal

Record software versions, chip identity, precision, shape, warm-up policy and measurement method with every result. The cited guidance supports correctness-first verification and later adjustment; it does not publish a general CUDA-versus-Ascend benchmark. Code migration alone therefore proves neither speedup nor performance parity.

9. Troubleshoot by symptom

The adapter will not import

Check that the Python interpreter is the one used to install the matrix-selected package, that the CANN environment was sourced in the launching process, and that driver and firmware match the hardware/CANN row. Do not start by changing model code.

The smoke test works but the model fails on one operator

Reduce the failure to the smallest input and identify the exact operator, dtype and shape. Consult the selected release’s operator support information, then substitute a standard supported operation as a correctness reference or isolate the custom extension for a separate port.

A Triton kernel fails compilation

First confirm the Python-side device changes and compile the unmodified body. Then inspect grid dimensions, unsupported index types, alignment, masks, buffer capacity and coreDim. Change one structural variable at a time so the cause remains visible.

Results differ numerically

Compare intermediate tensors, not only the final metric. Check accumulation and output dtypes, reduction order, masked boundary loads, initialization and unintended CPU/device transfers. Set tolerances appropriate to the model and precision mode rather than requiring bitwise identity by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The port is correct but slower

Separate compilation and startup time from steady-state execution, then profile host transfers, synchronization, grid utilization, tiling and memory use at production shapes. Revisit custom kernels only after standard operators and the end-to-end data path have been measured.

10. Define a supportable hand-off

Document the exact accelerator, operating system, driver, firmware, CANN, TorchNPU, PyTorch and Python versions; the environment initialization path; device-selection conventions; supported precision modes; known unsupported operators; and every custom kernel constraint. Include the smoke-test script and a small correctness corpus in continuous integration.

Keep a rollback path to the CUDA implementation until the NPU version passes representative correctness, coverage and operational tests. Re-run the compatibility check whenever any layer of the stack changes, because a seemingly minor package update can alter operator availability or kernel behavior.
