Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore paying for a used AI server, prove that the physical machine is the one being sold, confirm its exact configuration, and obtain written evidence of who owns it and what support remains. Record the chassis serial number, machine type, service tag or other vendor identifier, and any contract number. Match those identifiers to the listing, invoice and manufacturer support record.
Then ask the manufacturer—not only the seller—to confirm warranty status, covered components, expiration date, service location and whether support can transfer to you. Warranty rules vary by product, country and purchase channel. A seller’s statement that a server is “under warranty” is not proof that the warranty is valid for your organization.

Start with a unit-specific evidence packet
Treat a used AI server as a particular asset, not as an interchangeable model number. Your approval should apply only to the chassis, components and records you have verified. Ask the seller for the following before arranging payment or collection:
Recommended Free Tools
- Clear, recent photographs of every chassis label and identifier.
- The exact model, machine type, serial number, service tag, Express Code or equivalent identifier.
- A written quotation or invoice naming the selling entity, date, serial number and included components.
- The current manufacturer support or warranty result for that identifier.
- A configuration list covering GPUs, memory, storage, networking, power supplies and any included rails or accessories.
- Original purchase records when available, plus a bill of sale proving your transaction.
- Refurbishment, inspection, data-sanitization and testing records if the machine is described as refurbished.
- Written warranty, return and shipping terms from the seller.
If the seller will not provide identifiers or records before payment, pause the transaction. You cannot independently establish title, support eligibility or the advertised configuration from a generic product photograph.

Record every identifier on the physical server
Photograph the labels before shipment
Request high-resolution photographs of the chassis service label, rear label and any pull-out information tab. The image should show the full identifier and enough of the surrounding label to demonstrate that it belongs to the offered machine. Ask the seller to include the date or a handwritten reference in the photograph if you need to distinguish the unit from stock images.
At minimum, record:
- Serial number.
- Machine type or model type.
- Service tag and Express Code where the vendor uses them.
- Asset tag or inventory number, if present.
- Contract, entitlement or support identifier supplied by the seller.
- GPU and other removable-part serial numbers when they are available.
Do not substitute a motherboard, GPU or power-supply serial number for the server’s chassis serial number. Component identifiers can help establish what is installed, but the manufacturer’s warranty and service record may be attached to a different asset.
Check identifiers in more than one place
Compare the chassis label with the identifier shown in the server’s management interface or boot information when you receive the unit. A mismatch can indicate a replaced system board, an incorrectly catalogued machine or a stolen or mixed-part asset. Ask the seller to explain any discrepancy in writing and retain the explanation with your purchase records.
Reconcile the listing, invoice and support lookup
Use one worksheet for the entire transaction. Every identifier and configuration item should agree across the physical equipment, the seller’s listing, the quotation or invoice and the manufacturer’s support result.

| Record | What to match | What a mismatch means |
|---|---|---|
| Chassis label | Serial number, machine type and model | Stop and obtain a written explanation before proceeding. |
| Seller listing | Model, GPU count, memory, storage, networking and power supplies | The advertisement may describe a different configuration or a configurable base model. |
| Quotation or invoice | Seller identity, date, serial number and included equipment | You may lack proof of what was purchased or from whom. |
| Manufacturer lookup | Serial number or contract ID, support status and expiration | Coverage may belong to another asset, have expired or require confirmation. |
| Received machine | Physical parts and labels against the written quote | Use the return process; do not accept substitutions without a revised agreement. |
For Lenovo data-center products, the support guidance describes checking warranty information with a serial number or contract ID and identifies machine type and serial number as support information. Use the manufacturer’s own support channel for the exact server rather than relying on a screenshot supplied by a reseller.
Verify warranty and service coverage directly
Ask the manufacturer five specific questions
- Is the serial number valid and associated with the model being offered?
- What coverage remains, and what is the exact expiration date?
- Which components are covered, including GPUs, drives, memory and power supplies?
- Where can service be performed, and what response or dispatch terms apply to this location?
- Does coverage transfer to a subsequent owner, and is registration, proof of purchase or a contract-transfer form required?
Request the answer in writing, or save the manufacturer’s support result with the date checked. Coverage can change between the seller’s listing date and your purchase date, so perform the check as close to payment as practical.
Do not generalize one vendor’s transfer policy
Warranty transfer is product- and region-specific. The U.S. NVIDIA DGX Spark terms state that coverage is for the original owner and is non-transferable. The UK DGX Spark terms state that remaining coverage transfers to a subsequent owner and does not restart. Those are DGX Spark terms for specific regions; they are not a general rule for NVIDIA GPUs, other DGX products or rack servers. Obtain the terms for the precise product, country and purchase channel.
Likewise, a general second-hand ownership-transfer article for Dell systems should not be applied automatically to Dell servers. The cited Dell guidance expressly says that servers and storage are not applicable. Ask Dell or its authorized support channel about the exact server and service contract instead of assuming that a consumer or workstation transfer process applies.

Separate manufacturer coverage from seller coverage
A reseller may offer its own warranty even when the manufacturer’s warranty has expired or cannot transfer. Put the two promises in separate columns in your records. For a seller warranty, document the duration, covered parts, labor, shipping responsibility, exclusions, claim procedure and remedy if the unit is replaced. “Tested” or “warranted” without written terms does not tell you who pays for return freight or whether a failed GPU is covered.
Establish ownership and a defensible chain of title
Obtain a proper bill of sale
Ask for an invoice or bill of sale that names the legal selling entity, address, transaction date, price, server serial number, model and complete included configuration. It should identify accessories that materially affect operation, such as power supplies, GPU carriers, rails and network adapters. Keep the document with payment evidence and correspondence.
Request the prior owner’s name or organization and original purchase documentation when available. If privacy or contractual restrictions prevent disclosure, ask for proof that the seller is authorized to dispose of the asset, such as a decommissioning record or resale authorization. These are prudent buyer records; there is no single ownership checklist that applies to every jurisdiction or vendor.
Resolve liens, leases and restricted assets
Ask whether the server was leased, financed, rented, provided under a managed-service contract or subject to an asset-disposal restriction. Require the seller to state in writing that it has the right to sell the machine and that it will not be reclaimed by a lender, former customer or lessor. If the answer is unclear, obtain legal advice appropriate to your jurisdiction before sending funds.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Preserve the record after purchase
Store the original listing, photographs, invoice, bill of sale, payment receipt, support correspondence and serial-number lookup together. Record who handed over the machine and the date of collection or delivery. If a manufacturer later asks for proof of purchase or a transfer form, you will have a consistent evidence trail.
Confirm the advertised configuration component by component
AI-server listings often describe a base chassis while showing an upgraded configuration. Compare the written quote with the actual unit, not just the model family.
| Component | Checks before payment | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| GPUs | Exact model, quantity, memory capacity, carrier or riser arrangement and serial numbers where visible. | Configuration sheet and photographs of installed cards. |
| System memory | Total capacity, module count and whether all advertised modules are installed. | Seller declaration and receiving inspection record. |
| Storage | Drive count, interface, capacity and whether drives are included or merely shown. | Invoice line item and photographs or inventory output. |
| Networking | Physical adapters, port speeds and transceivers or cables included. | Written part list and accessory list. |
| Power | Number and rating of power supplies, input requirements and included power cords. | Photographs of power-supply labels and invoice. |
| Chassis accessories | Rails, bezels, fan modules, GPU brackets and other parts needed for rack installation. | Signed handover checklist. |
The available manufacturer material does not certify the workload suitability of any particular used server. A matching parts list proves what is installed; it does not prove that the machine will meet your model, driver, thermal or performance requirements. Treat workload validation as a separate acceptance test.

What a certified program can document
Lenovo’s Certified Refurbished server program describes technician testing, component inspection, repairs using original parts and data sanitization. Those are program-level statements, not proof that every used server offered by every seller received the same treatment. Ask for the program name, the unit’s eligibility, the inspection result and the warranty and return terms that apply to that serial number.

What to demand from a third-party refurbisher
For equipment described as refurbished by a reseller, request:
- A dated inspection report naming the technician or service organization.
- A list of replaced, repaired or missing parts.
- A data-wipe or sanitization certificate identifying the drives or asset.
- Burn-in or functional-test results, including the duration and the components tested.
- Any known faults, cosmetic damage or port that is not operational.
- Written seller warranty and return conditions for the exact unit.
The word “refurbished” by itself does not establish inspection quality, data-sanitization history or remaining service life. The available sources do not establish the physical condition or reliability of any individual used server, so those facts must come from unit-specific records and your own acceptance test.
Compare offers on risk, not only price
A lower purchase price can disappear when you add missing components, freight, service contracts, drive replacement, warranty limitations and return risk. Compare offers using the same evidence categories.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | Who owns the asset and who is selling it? | Unclear title can prevent support, resale or recovery of the machine. |
| Identifier consistency | Do labels, documents and support records agree? | Inconsistency signals cataloguing or asset-identity risk. |
| Configuration | Are all GPUs, memory, storage, networking and power parts included? | Missing parts can cost more than the apparent discount. |
| Testing and sanitization | What was inspected, repaired, tested and wiped? | Documentation reduces uncertainty about condition and residual data. |
| Manufacturer support | Is coverage active, transferable and usable at your location? | A warranty that cannot be transferred or serviced locally has limited value. |
| Seller remedy | How long is the return window and who pays shipping? | Early failures are easier to manage when the remedy is explicit. |
| Total cost | What will missing coverage or components cost? | Compare the completed, supportable system rather than the headline price. |
There is no market-wide price or reliability statistic established here. Do not treat a certified program as automatically cheaper or more reliable than every third-party unit; compare the records and terms for the offers in front of you.
Use a staged purchase and acceptance process
- Request the evidence packet. Obtain photographs, identifiers, configuration, ownership statement, warranty result and seller terms before paying.
- Reconcile the records. Check every serial number and component against the listing and invoice. Ask for corrections in writing.
- Contact the manufacturer. Verify coverage, transferability, service geography and contract requirements for the exact serial number.
- Price the complete system. Add missing rails, drives, power cords, transceivers, shipping and any support contract needed for deployment.
- Write acceptance conditions. State that the delivered serial number and configuration must match the invoice and that undisclosed substitutions trigger return or refund rights.
- Inspect on arrival. Photograph packaging and labels, check for shipping damage, inventory the parts and record any discrepancy immediately.
- Run your own functional test. Confirm that the system boots, recognizes the advertised GPUs, memory, storage, networking and power supplies, and remains stable under your planned validation workload.
- Complete the support transfer. Submit any required proof of purchase or registration and save the confirmation.
- Close the transaction only after reconciliation. Retain the final signed handover, test results and support record with the ownership documents.
Red flags and the appropriate response
- No serial-number photographs: do not pay a deposit based on stock images.
- Serial number differs between label and invoice: require a corrected invoice or walk away.
- Warranty claim is “verified” only by the seller: obtain confirmation from the manufacturer.
- Transfer policy is quoted for another product or country: request terms for the exact server and region.
- “Refurbished” has no inspection or sanitization report: treat it as ordinary used equipment and price the added risk.
- Configuration is described as “up to” a GPU or memory count: obtain a unit-specific parts list.
- Seller refuses to identify the selling entity or provide a bill of sale: do not proceed until ownership and recourse are clear.
- Pressure to pay before manufacturer verification: pause; urgency is not evidence of title or coverage.
Keep a buyer’s final checklist
Before releasing the balance, confirm each item:
- Physical serial number, machine type and service identifier are recorded.
- Listing, quotation, invoice and chassis labels agree.
- Manufacturer support status, expiration, covered components and service location are documented.
- Transfer or registration requirements are understood and completed where applicable.
- Seller’s legal identity and authority to sell are recorded.
- Bill of sale names the exact serial number and included configuration.
- GPU, memory, storage, networking, power supplies and accessories match the quote.
- Inspection, repair, data-sanitization and test records are on file.
- Seller warranty, return window and shipping responsibilities are written down.
- Acceptance-test results and any exceptions are signed by both parties.
Only after this checklist is complete do you have a defensible basis for deciding whether the discount compensates for the remaining condition, support and ownership risk.
