1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen buying imported gold jewellery in India, focus on the Indian hallmark and the seller’s invoice—not a foreign certificate alone. Check that the seller is BIS-registered, confirm the piece was tested and hallmarked by a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre, verify its HUID in the BIS CARE app, and get an invoice that records the article, net precious-metal weight, purity and hallmarking charges.
What to check before paying
- Confirm the seller’s BIS registration. Ask whether the Indian jeweller is registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). BIS says imported jewellery may be sold by a registered jeweller after it has been tested and hallmarked at a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre. A foreign certificate alone does not establish that the Indian hallmarking process has been completed. See BIS jeweller guidance.
- Inspect the hallmark. The current HUID hallmark consists of the BIS mark, purity shown in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. Ask the seller to show the marks clearly; BIS consumer guidance says a jeweller should display its BIS registration certificate and make a magnifier of at least 10× available for customers. A magnifier helps you see the marks but does not authenticate the gold. Details are in the BIS Hallmarking FAQ and Common Consumer FAQ.
- Verify the HUID. In the BIS CARE app, use the “Verify HUID” feature and check that the recorded item details correspond to the jewellery you intend to buy. Treat this as an additional check, not a replacement for a proper invoice. BIS explains the HUID check in its consumer protection guidance.
- Read the invoice before leaving. Make sure it identifies each article and states its net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Keep the authentic bill for any later complaint or dispute. BIS says including the HUID on the invoice is currently voluntary, so its absence from the bill alone does not mean the invoice is incomplete.
What the invoice should say
BIS’s consumer guidance specifies four particulars for the bill or invoice for a hallmarked precious-metal article:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Description of each article
- Net weight of precious metal
- Purity in carat and fineness
- Hallmarking charges
Check that the description and weight apply to the specific piece, rather than only to the overall purchase. For a set or multiple items, ensure the invoice describes each article. The BIS Common Consumer FAQ sets out these invoice particulars.
Check every piece in a pair or set
Do not assume one mark covers an entire purchase. BIS says each article in a pair and each detachable jewellery part should have a hallmark. Inspect the individual earrings, components or detachable pieces and make sure the bill describes each article.

If the seller offers an unhallmarked item
BIS lists exemptions from mandatory hallmarking, including jewellery below two grams, specified special jewellery categories and qualifying jewellers below the stated turnover threshold. These exemptions are conditional; imported origin by itself does not establish that a piece is exempt. Ask the seller to identify the specific exemption being relied on and provide the explanation on the bill or in writing. BIS jeweller guidance lists the exemptions and the import-sale process: BIS guidance for jewellers.
What to do if you later doubt the purity
You can have jewellery, or a sample of it, tested for a charge at a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre and receive an assay report. BIS describes compensation where hallmarked jewellery tests below the marked purity: twice the amount of the difference for the weight of the item, plus testing charges. Keep your invoice and review the applicable BIS consumer guidance for the process: BIS consumer protection.

Do you need import or customs papers as the buyer?
BIS’s consumer and jeweller guidance addresses Indian hallmarking and invoice particulars; it does not establish a separate import-entry or customs document that a retail buyer must receive. For this purchase checklist, ask for the Indian seller’s BIS registration details, verify the hallmark and HUID, and retain the itemised invoice. This is not customs, tax or legal advice.
