Then check the exact model’s requirements, power and pairing mode, phone setup, Wi-Fi band, and network settings—in that order. An app error by itself does not prove the router is at fault.
First identify what “won’t connect” means
Smart home setup involves several links: the accessory must be powered and able to communicate, the phone or controller must be able to add it, and the app or platform must be able to control it afterward. Pinpointing the failed link helps avoid changing router settings when the problem is actually pairing, compatibility, or platform control.

| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The accessory will not join the wireless network during setup | Its Wi-Fi requirements, network credentials, pairing mode, and router configuration. |
| The accessory appears online in its maker’s app but cannot be added to a smart home platform | Platform compatibility and the connection between that platform and the manufacturer’s app or service. For a third-party non-Matter Wi-Fi device being added to Alexa, Amazon advises checking the maker’s Alexa skill. |
| The accessory was added but no longer responds | Whether the accessory is still online, its firmware, and the hub or platform path used to control it. |
The distinction matters: a device can be connected to Wi-Fi but still fail during platform setup or control. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Apple’s instructions for accessories that stop responding in Home address different stages of the problem.
Check the accessory and phone before changing the router
Verify the exact model and setup requirements
Start with the accessory’s model-specific manual or setup instructions. Confirm that the device is supported by the app or smart home platform you intend to use, and look for any requirements involving a manufacturer app, firmware, extra hardware, or a particular setup method. Compatibility can vary by model; a product category or brand name alone is not enough to establish that a device will work with a given platform.

Apple’s Home setup guidance recommends checking compatibility and any manufacturer-specific requirements before trying to add an accessory. It also calls out Bluetooth and proximity to the router as relevant setup checks. See Apple’s accessory setup instructions for the Home app.
Confirm power, pairing mode, and phone readiness
Make sure the accessory has power and is in the pairing or setup mode specified by its manufacturer. If the device is not advertising itself for setup, repeatedly retrying in the app may not help. Follow the model’s instructions for entering pairing mode rather than assuming that a blinking light or button sequence is the same across products.
Keep the phone close enough to the accessory during setup and, where the instructions require it, enable Bluetooth. Check that the phone and relevant app are up to date, and complete any preliminary steps in the manufacturer’s app. Google’s pairing guidance also recommends checking phone settings, pairing mode, and restarting equipment when pairing problems occur.

Match the accessory to the Wi-Fi band and network
Check whether the device supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or both
Do not assume every Wi-Fi accessory supports every band. Some accessories are not compatible with 5 GHz, while setup instructions for some devices may call for using a 2.4 GHz network. These are device- and setup-specific requirements, not a general instruction to disable 5 GHz throughout the home.
Read the exact model’s instructions to find its supported bands and any setup conditions. If a router presents separate network names for its bands, follow the accessory maker’s directions for which one to select. TP-Link’s Matter setup guide, for example, directs users with a router that separates bands to choose 2.4 GHz for the setup described in that guide; this does not establish the same requirement for all Matter or Wi-Fi devices. Apple and Google likewise describe band compatibility or 2.4 GHz-only setup as relevant for some accessories, not all. Their guidance is available from Apple, Google Home and Nest Help, and TP-Link.
Keep the phone and accessory on a workable setup path
During setup, connect the phone to the intended home network and make sure the accessory can communicate with it as required by the setup flow. A guest network, extender, or mesh arrangement can affect that path. In particular, access point or client isolation can prevent devices on a network from reaching one another, and guest mode may also interfere with setup. Google identifies these as possible barriers in its Seamless setup troubleshooting.

Before changing a router setting, identify what it does and consider which other devices or guests might be affected. If you cannot tell whether isolation or guest mode is enabled, consult the router’s instructions or support rather than changing settings at random. A successful connection to the main network but not a guest network points toward a network-path issue; it does not by itself mean the accessory is faulty.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For Matter devices, check the transport and required hardware
Matter describes a smart home interoperability standard; it does not make every accessory’s network requirements identical. First determine whether the particular accessory uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. A Wi-Fi Matter accessory still has Wi-Fi band and router requirements. A Thread-based Matter accessory requires a Thread border router for the setup described by Google, as well as a Bluetooth Low Energy-capable mobile device during setup.
Also check that the target platform and its controller or hub support the device and meet the relevant software requirements. Apple notes that Matter setup requirements depend on platform and software version and recommends a home hub for the best experience in its documented Home setup context. Use the instructions for the actual device and platform instead of assuming that Matter removes the need for compatible network hardware. Google’s details are in its Matter setup guide; Apple’s requirements are in its Home accessory setup instructions.

Use a controlled restart and an alternate network to isolate the cause
Restart only the relevant equipment
If the basic requirements appear correct, restart the accessory, phone, router, or hub as appropriate, then try setup again. If the device has a manufacturer app, check whether that app reports it online. This can help distinguish a device-to-Wi-Fi problem from a problem adding or controlling it through another platform. Google includes restart steps in its pairing troubleshooting; Apple recommends checking firmware and restarting accessories or hubs when a previously added Home accessory stops responding.
Try another supported network as a diagnostic
If the device supports it, a temporary mobile hotspot or another network can help determine whether the home network is involved. Google suggests using a temporary hotspot to test whether a Google smart speaker or display can connect elsewhere. If the accessory connects on the alternate network, focus next on the home router, network configuration, or internet service path. If it fails there too, return to model compatibility, pairing, firmware, and manufacturer-specific setup instructions. A hotspot result narrows the investigation; it does not identify the exact router or service fault on its own. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting for its speaker and display context.
Choose the next step based on how many devices are affected
The scope of the failure is a useful clue, not a definitive diagnosis. If one accessory or one maker’s products are affected, check that maker’s app, model instructions, firmware, and setup flow. If multiple accessories from different makers fail around the same time, investigate shared parts of the setup—such as the phone, router, hub, or network conditions—before treating each device as a separate hardware fault.

Use the failure stage and network tests together:
- One device cannot join Wi-Fi: recheck that model’s band support, pairing mode, and credentials, then follow its maker’s setup instructions.
- Several devices fail during setup: inspect shared phone, platform, router, or hub conditions, including whether the setup path crosses a guest network or isolated clients.
- The device is online in its maker’s app but unavailable in another platform: investigate platform compatibility or the relevant integration, such as the maker’s Alexa skill for a third-party non-Matter Wi-Fi device.
- The device works on another supported network: concentrate on the home network or internet-service path; use router or provider support if the blocking condition is unclear.
- The device fails across networks after setup checks: consult the manufacturer about model-specific firmware, pairing, or hardware troubleshooting.
Reset only after less disruptive checks
Resetting can erase configuration or require the device to be added from the beginning. It may also mean you need the original setup process or code again, particularly for a Matter accessory or one previously added to another home. Do not use a generic reset sequence: follow the manufacturer’s exact instructions for the model.
Try compatibility, power, pairing mode, phone setup, band requirements, network path, and appropriate restarts first. If setup still fails, Apple recommends following the manufacturer’s reset instructions for an accessory that cannot be added. For an accessory that was already working but stopped responding, Apple advises checking firmware and restarting the accessory or hub before removing and resetting it. Its separate guidance for adding an accessory and for an accessory that is not responding helps distinguish those situations.
When to contact the manufacturer, platform, or network provider
Contact the accessory manufacturer when the exact model’s pairing or reset instructions are unclear, its app cannot bring it online, or the device still fails after the supported setup checks. Provide the model and describe the stage where it fails; this is more useful than reporting only that it “won’t connect.”
Contact the smart home platform’s support when the accessory is online in its own app but cannot be added or controlled by the platform, after confirming that the model and integration are supported. Contact the router or internet provider when several devices are affected or the accessory connects through another supported network but not the home setup, especially if you cannot identify the relevant router setting. A new router, hub, or accessory is not a routine first fix: establish that compatibility, coverage, or a specific network limitation is the blocker before considering different hardware.
