Before you discard the box, verify the laptop and accessories, complete the operating-system setup, install the updates offered for that exact device, and test the functions you will rely on. Use the checks below to catch visible damage, setup problems, and obvious hardware faults. They are not a certification that every latent defect has been found.
1. Inspect the shipment before you set anything up
Verify the order and configuration
Keep the shipping carton, inner packaging, charger and paperwork together while you check the machine. Compare the label on the box and the laptop with your order confirmation:

- Model family and exact model number.
- Processor, memory and storage capacity.
- Display size, resolution and any stated panel feature.
- Operating-system edition and keyboard layout.
- Colour or other configuration details that were part of the order.
Open the laptop and compare the serial or service identifier with the documentation if the manufacturer provides one. A mismatch is easier to resolve before you sign in, migrate data or remove protective films.

Under bright, even light, inspect the carton, corners, hinges, lid, palm rest and underside. Look for crushed areas, punctures, cracks, gaps in the chassis, bent ports, loose trim or a display that does not sit squarely. Do not force a stiff hinge or plug a connector into a port that appears deformed.

Photograph the box and any damage before discarding packing materials. Note the date, the location of each mark and whether the damage was visible on the carton. These records help the seller or manufacturer distinguish shipping damage from a later accident.
Confirm the included items
Check that the expected AC adapter, power cord, regional plug and any model-specific items are present. Some laptops include a USB-C charger, a proprietary adapter or separate documentation; use the list supplied with your exact model rather than assuming that every box contains the same accessories.
Do not buy replacement parts merely because an item is missing. First ask the seller whether the package was split into multiple shipments or whether the configuration was supposed to include that item.

2. Connect power and complete first-run setup
Use model-specific first-start instructions
Read the quick-start sheet or online manual for the exact model before pressing the power button. First-start and charging behavior is not universal. For example, ASUS’s new-device guidance recommends connecting the included AC adapter before the first startup and describes battery-storage protections that can affect the initial start. That is ASUS-specific advice, not a rule for every laptop.
Connect the supplied adapter to a suitable wall outlet, plug it into the laptop, and start the machine according to its manual. If there is no response, check the outlet, both ends of the cable and any charging indicator. Stop if you smell burning, hear repeated electrical arcing or see swelling, smoke or heat that is clearly abnormal.
Work through the operating-system assistant
Windows notebooks use the out-of-box experience (OOBE); MSI publishes a Windows OOBE guide as one vendor-specific reference. A new Mac uses Apple’s Setup Assistant. Screens and requirements vary by release, region and hardware, but the decisions generally include:

- Select language, region, keyboard layout and time zone.
- Join a trusted Wi-Fi network, or use another supported connection.
- Create or sign in to the account you want to own the device. Record recovery information in a secure place.
- Review accessibility options if you need larger text, spoken assistance, contrast or alternative input.
- Read privacy, location, diagnostics and cloud-sync choices. Enable only the services you understand and intend to use.
- Allow the setup assistant to finish before closing the lid or forcing a shutdown.
Use a temporary test account only if you deliberately want to inspect hardware before committing your personal account. Otherwise, setting up the account you will keep avoids a second migration and makes later support records easier to match to the device.
Do not treat a clean installation as routine setup
Microsoft notes that installing Windows from installation media with a clean-install path removes files and applications. It is therefore not a first-day step for a functioning new computer unless you have a specific, documented reason and a backup of anything you need. Complete the supplied setup first and preserve the original recovery options while you verify the machine.
3. Install the updates offered for this laptop
Windows 11
After reaching the desktop, connect to power and open Settings > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install the applicable updates offered for the device, and restart when Windows asks. Return to the same page and check again if the first restart reveals additional updates.
Windows 11 availability is staged and depends on compatibility. A newly purchased laptop can therefore show a different update sequence from another model, even on the same day. Let Windows finish the updates it offers rather than forcing an unrelated release through installation media.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If a new laptop arrives with Windows 10, confirm the model’s supported upgrade path and licensing with the seller or manufacturer instead of assuming that every configuration can be moved to Windows 11.
macOS
On a Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update. Software Update checks for releases compatible with that Mac model and presents the updates Apple makes available. Install the offered updates, keep the Mac connected to power, and restart when prompted.

An empty update panel does not mean that every macOS release is available to every Mac. Compatibility is model-dependent. If you expected a particular version, check the model’s support information rather than repeatedly installing from unofficial media.
After an update, check again
Updates can change the order in which firmware, drivers and operating-system components become available. After each requested restart:
- Confirm that the laptop reaches the desktop normally.
- Reopen the platform’s update page and look for remaining items.
- Record any update that repeatedly fails, including its error text or code.
- Do not interrupt a firmware update or close the lid while the manufacturer explicitly says the process is in progress.
4. Run a practical hardware check
These tests are hands-on observations, not calibrated benchmarks. Perform them with the laptop on a stable surface and connected to power, then record anything that is repeatable.

Display
Open a plain white page, then a plain black or dark page at a comfortable brightness. Look for cracks, pressure marks, flicker, lines, areas that stay a different colour and pixels that remain obviously bright or dark. Inspect the bezel and hinge while changing the lid angle gently. A single unusual pixel may be covered by the manufacturer’s panel policy, so document its position and consult the exact policy rather than declaring a failure from appearance alone.
Keyboard and touchpad
Type a sentence that uses letters, numbers, punctuation, Shift, Backspace, Enter and the function row. Test both sides of any duplicated key, such as left and right Shift or Ctrl. Check that each press registers once and that no key sticks.
Move the pointer to every corner, click the primary and secondary buttons or the configured click zones, and try scrolling and a supported multi-finger gesture. A touchpad that works only intermittently, moves without contact or fails after a restart is worth documenting before you install additional software.

Speakers, microphone and camera
Play a local system sound or a trusted audio clip at a moderate volume. Listen for rattling, one-sided output or crackling. Open the operating system’s sound settings and make a short microphone recording; play it back to check for dropouts or excessive noise. Open the camera preview and check the image, focus behavior and privacy shutter or indicator if the model has one.

Connect to your normal Wi-Fi network, browse several pages and move to a location where you normally work. Confirm that the connection survives sleep and wake. If you use Bluetooth peripherals, pair one and verify that it reconnects after a restart. These checks reveal configuration or radio problems but do not measure maximum wireless throughput.
Charging and battery behavior
With the supplied adapter connected, confirm that the operating system reports charging or an equivalent powered state. Gently move the connector only enough to check that ordinary handling does not cause repeated connect-and-disconnect events. Unplug the adapter and verify that the laptop changes to battery power without an immediate shutdown. Do not infer battery health from a short observation; capacity and runtime depend on workload, settings, temperature and the manufacturer’s charging policy.
Ports and the accessories you actually need
Test each port you expect to use: USB, USB-C, audio, video output, memory-card slot, wired network or another model-specific connector. Use a known-good accessory where possible and check that the operating system detects it. If you do not own a device for a particular port, record it as untested rather than assuming it works.
Sleep, wake and ordinary restart
Save your work, restart once and confirm that the laptop returns to the sign-in screen without unusual messages. Close and reopen the lid if the model uses lid sleep, or invoke sleep from the operating system. Verify that the display, network, audio and input devices return after wake. A single slow first boot after updates can be normal; repeated hangs, crashes or failure to wake should be recorded with the conditions that triggered them.

5. Use built-in manufacturer diagnostics when available
Diagnostic environments run either inside the operating system or before it starts. They can test selected components and often produce a report or reference code, but availability varies by brand, model, processor generation, country and operating-system version.

ASUS UEFI diagnostics
Consult the support page and manual for your exact ASUS model to enter its UEFI System Diagnostics. Run the available component tests, especially for storage, wireless, touchpad and display if those options appear. Save a photo or written copy of any failure identifier. If the diagnostic menu is absent, that may reflect the processor generation, model or country availability rather than a fault.
HP battery diagnostics
For an HP notebook, use the documented PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI battery test. Follow the on-screen preparation instructions, let the test complete and record the result or failure ID. A battery failure should be reported with the notebook’s model and serial information; do not replace a battery based only on a brief runtime impression.
Apple Diagnostics
Disconnect nonessential external devices and follow Apple’s preparation and startup instructions for your Mac model. Run Apple Diagnostics, note the result and retain the reference code. If macOS Tahoe 26 or later presents individual tests, select the component that matches the symptom, such as the built-in display, keyboard or trackpad. A code indicates what Apple’s diagnostic detected or recommends investigating; it is not a permission to open the machine or install parts without checking service instructions.
6. What to do when a check fails
Separate a setup problem from a hardware symptom
First repeat the observation once after a normal restart and, where relevant, after installing the offered operating-system updates. Check simple causes such as muted audio, a disabled camera privacy setting, the wrong display output, airplane mode, a loose adapter or an accessory that is itself faulty. Do not repeatedly force power-offs during an update or diagnostic run.

Preserve evidence and act promptly
Write down the symptom in neutral terms: what you did, what you expected, what happened and whether it repeats. Keep photographs, diagnostic reports, reference codes, order records and correspondence together. Apple specifically advises retaining its diagnostic reference code when seeking service; HP and ASUS likewise provide model-specific diagnostic and support routes.
Ask the seller or manufacturer which exchange, return, warranty or repair process applies to your purchase. There is no single return deadline that covers every seller and location, so do not rely on a generic number. Follow the terms shown on your order and the applicable local consumer rules.
Do not open the laptop while a return or service decision is pending
Removing the back cover, replacing a component or installing unofficial firmware can complicate a claim and may create a new fault. Keep the machine in its received configuration until the responsible support channel tells you what to do. If a replacement or repair is approved, back up personal data and follow the provider’s instructions for data removal.

- Charger, cord and expected items present.
- First startup completed using the exact model’s instructions.
- Account, network, accessibility and privacy choices reviewed.
- Windows Update or macOS Software Update completed and checked again.
- Display, keyboard, touchpad, speakers, microphone and camera checked.
- Wi-Fi, charging, battery transition and required ports checked.
- Restart, sleep and wake completed without repeatable faults.
- Available ASUS, HP, Apple or other manufacturer diagnostics run according to the model manual.
- Failure symptoms, photos, reports and reference codes saved.
- Seller or manufacturer contacted through the applicable support process when needed.
What this inspection can—and cannot—tell you
This process is designed to catch obvious damage, missing items, setup errors and repeatable failures in everyday functions. It does not establish a defect rate, guarantee a particular battery runtime, measure gaming or professional performance, or prove that a component will never fail. Manufacturer diagnostics cover only the tests they provide for that model. Treat a clean result as useful evidence that the checked functions passed at that time, not as a lifetime warranty.
