The connected switch or router port, an intermediate cable run, a forced speed setting, a driver, or the mini PC’s firmware may be limiting negotiation. First read the negotiated Ethernet rate in the operating system, then test the far-end port, cable, and mini PC in controlled combinations. Upgrade to a 2.5GbE switch only after proving that the existing 1Gbps port is the bottleneck.
What a 1Gbps link actually tells you
Ethernet link negotiation is between two endpoints. A mini PC can contain a 2.5GbE controller yet establish a 1Gbps link when the switch or router on the other end supports only 1GbE. The same result can occur when an intermediate switch, wall jack, patch panel, or damaged termination prevents a 2.5Gbps connection.

Do not confuse the negotiated link rate with an internet speed-test result. A speed test measures throughput to a remote server and can be limited by your internet plan, server load, routing, or other traffic. The link rate is the local Ethernet connection between the mini PC and its immediate peer. Intel’s NUC guidance uses that operating-system value as the first diagnostic observation: Intel NUC Laptop or Element LAN Not Reaching Max Speed (last reviewed October 22, 2025).

Windows 10 and similar Windows interfaces
- Open Settings.
- Choose Network & Internet, then the active Ethernet connection.
- Open Network Properties and find Link speed (Receive/Transmit).
The exact labels and location can vary by Windows release and by the mini PC manufacturer. Record the value shown for both receive and transmit. A value of 1.0 Gbps identifies the local negotiated mode; it does not prove that the mini PC’s controller is incapable of 2.5GbE.

Other operating systems
Linux, macOS, and other systems expose the negotiated rate in different network-information screens or commands. Use the operating system’s link-status value rather than an internet benchmark. If the interface reports 2.5Gbps but a speed test is near 1Gbps, investigate the rest of the network or internet path instead of treating the Ethernet negotiation as the fault.
Verify both endpoints and every intermediate link
Read the specifications for the exact mini PC model and the exact switch or router port in use. Some devices have a mixture of 1GbE and 2.5GbE sockets, so the chassis or product family name is not enough. Confirm that the socket connected to the mini PC is rated for 2.5GbE and that any intermediate switch can carry that rate on the relevant ports.
The cleanest test is a direct connection to a known 2.5GbE-capable peer, avoiding a wall run or an intervening switch. If the mini PC negotiates at 2.5Gbps there, its built-in port is probably working and the original network path is the constraint. If it remains at 1Gbps on a known-capable peer, continue with cable, configuration, driver, and firmware checks.
Swap the cable and the switch or router port
Use a known-working cable
Replace the patch cable with one already proven to establish a 2.5GbE link on another device. Intel’s I225-V troubleshooting guidance recommends a known-working cable, preferably Cat5e or higher, and testing another router port: Intel Ethernet Controller I225-V Does Not Detect a Working Cable (last reviewed August 8, 2022).
A category marking alone does not guarantee a 2.5GbE connection. Cable condition, plug and jack termination, the installed wall run, and the far-end port still matter. Keep the original cable available so you can repeat the comparison after each change.

Try a different port
Move the mini PC to another confirmed 2.5GbE socket on the same switch or router. If the device has only one multi-gigabit socket, check its documentation for which numbered port supports it. Observe the negotiated value after each move rather than relying on link LEDs, which often show only activity or a broad speed class.
Test the suspect path with another device
Connect another computer or network device that is known to negotiate at 2.5GbE using the same cable and port. Then connect the mini PC to the known-good cable and port used by that device. Intel’s NUC and controller guidance both use cross-device and alternate-cable checks to separate a path problem from a system-specific problem.

Leave Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation
For baseline troubleshooting, both endpoints should be allowed to negotiate. In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, open the Ethernet adapter’s Properties, select the Advanced tab, and locate Speed & Duplex. Set it to Auto Negotiation (the wording can differ slightly by driver), apply the change, and reconnect the cable.
Intel’s I225-V support article states: “Recommended setting is Auto Negotiation. Forcing link can result in a speed-duplex mismatch.” A forced value on one side while the switch or router remains on auto-negotiation can produce an incorrect speed, loss of connectivity, or duplex errors. If you previously selected 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex while experimenting, restore auto-negotiation on the mini PC and on any managed network device before retesting.
Do not force 2.5Gbps as a generic fix. A setting cannot make a 1GbE switch port advertise a capability it does not have, and an incompatible forced mode can make diagnosis harder.

Use a controlled A/B test to locate the fault
Change one item at a time and record the link value shown by the operating system. This matrix keeps the result tied to a specific component:
| Test | Result | Most likely focus |
|---|---|---|
| Another device on the original cable and port | Also negotiates at 1Gbps | The switch/router port, cable, or intervening path is limiting the link. |
| Another device on the original cable and port | Negotiates at 2.5Gbps | The mini PC, its settings, driver, firmware, or its cable connection deserves attention. |
| Mini PC on a known-good 2.5GbE cable and port | Negotiates at 2.5Gbps | The original cable or network port/path is the cause. |
| Mini PC on a known-good 2.5GbE cable and port | Still negotiates at 1Gbps | Check auto-negotiation, the OEM driver, BIOS, and possible hardware fault. |
| Mini PC directly connected to a known 2.5GbE peer | Negotiates at 2.5Gbps | The intervening switch or structured cabling is limiting the normal connection. |
| Mini PC directly connected to a known 2.5GbE peer | Still negotiates at 1Gbps | The mini PC-side configuration or hardware remains suspect. |
These are diagnostic inferences, not guarantees: a second device can have a different controller, and a “known-good” path can conceal an intermittent fault. Repeat a promising result several times after reconnecting the cable.
Update the exact model’s LAN driver and BIOS
If the symptom follows the mini PC across known-good cables and ports, install the current Ethernet driver and BIOS supplied for that exact model. Intel’s NUC guidance recommends current LAN drivers and BIOS and directs owners of OEM systems to the manufacturer, because a generic driver may not include system-specific changes. Start with the mini PC maker’s support page, verify the model and hardware revision, and follow its installation and rollback instructions.
After a driver update, reboot and check the link value again. A BIOS update can also reset adapter settings, so revisit Speed & Duplex and confirm auto-negotiation. Avoid installing a driver intended for a similar-looking model or a different network controller; the wrong package can remove advanced settings or create a new connectivity problem.
Intel’s secondary guidance for the I219-V also emphasizes checking the far-end device, comparing another system, using the OEM driver, and retaining auto-negotiation. That article concerns an I219-V performance case rather than a mini PC 2.5GbE negotiation fault, so use it as general troubleshooting context rather than proof of a particular cause: Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V Unable to Reach Gigabit Speed (last reviewed July 13, 2022).

Be cautious with advanced 2.5G advertisement settings
Some adapter drivers expose an option to advertise only a selected capability. Intel documents selecting 2.5G to advertise 2.5G as the only speed in auto-negotiation for a specific X550-T1 adapter and driver context: How to Configure Intel Ethernet Adapters to Work at 2.5Gbps/5Gbps (last reviewed April 13, 2023).
That instruction is adapter-specific. Do not assume the same menu or behavior exists on every mini PC, and do not use it to override a 1GbE link partner. If the mini PC manufacturer documents a comparable setting for your exact model, follow that documentation; otherwise leave the option at its default and use auto-negotiation for the baseline test.
Power-cycle after physical or configuration changes
After changing a cable, port, driver, or adapter setting, disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable. If the link remains stuck, shut down the mini PC and power-cycle the switch or router according to its normal procedure, then boot the mini PC and check the negotiated value. A fresh negotiation removes a stale link state, but it cannot overcome a 1GbE port or a defective path.

Buy or deploy a 2.5GbE unmanaged switch only when testing establishes that the current switch or router port is limited to 1GbE. Before replacing it, verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- The mini PC negotiates at 2.5Gbps with a known-capable peer.
- The replacement switch has 2.5GbE on the specific ports you will use, not merely on one uplink.
- Any second switch, router uplink, wall run, or storage device that must carry more than 1Gbps also supports the required rate.
- The switch’s management features and port count fit the rest of the network.
If the mini PC stays at 1Gbps when directly connected to a known 2.5GbE peer, a new switch will not cure the mini PC-side problem. Resolve the driver, BIOS, configuration, cable, or hardware issue first.

Common outcomes and the next action
Everything on one switch port is 1Gbps
Check the port specification, switch configuration, and cable path. If every device negotiates at 1Gbps, the port or path is the leading explanation, not the mini PC.
Only this mini PC is 1Gbps
Use the known-good cable and port from the A/B test, restore auto-negotiation, then install the OEM LAN driver and BIOS. If the rate remains 1Gbps on a direct known-capable connection, contact the mini PC manufacturer with the model, BIOS version, driver version, and test results.
The link changes between 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps
Suspect an unstable cable, termination, port, power state, or driver. Replace the cable first, try another port, and observe whether the behavior follows one component. Do not interpret an occasional 2.5Gbps link as proof that the path is reliable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no link at all after forcing a speed
Return both sides to auto-negotiation, reconnect the cable, and restart the network equipment. If necessary, use the adapter’s driver reset or uninstall-and-reinstall procedure supplied by the mini PC manufacturer.
Quick Recap
Final diagnostic checklist
- Read Link speed (Receive/Transmit) in the operating system.
- Confirm the exact mini PC NIC and far-end port support 2.5GbE.
- Test a known-working Cat5e-or-higher cable, without treating its category marking as a guarantee.
- Try another confirmed multi-gigabit switch or router port.
- Keep Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation on both sides.
- Compare another device on the same path and the mini PC on a known-good path.
- Install the exact OEM LAN driver and BIOS when the symptom follows the mini PC.
- Use model-specific advanced settings only when the manufacturer documents them.
- Replace the switch only after proving its 1GbE port is the limiting component.
