When a GPU server slows during a long compute or inference run, do not diagnose it from one temperature reading. First prove when performance changes, then capture a time series of utilization, power, temperatures, clocks and the active throttle reason. Compare those values with the limits reported by that exact GPU. A lower clock can be an intentional power cap, a thermal response, a server power-brake signal or a multi-GPU synchronization effect—not necessarily a failed card.
Start with a timeline, not a temperature threshold
Record the server model, every GPU model, driver version, GPU-management software version, workload and start time. Note the exact moment throughput falls or inference latency rises. Keep the original workload running while you collect data; an idle or short benchmark can hide a problem that appears only after heat or power accumulates.

Capture a baseline at idle and again during the first minutes of the workload. At minimum, collect per-GPU utilization, power draw, GPU temperature, memory temperature when supported, SM clock and memory clock. Supported fields differ by device, so an unavailable value is not evidence that the sensor is normal.
- Workload activity: GPU and memory utilization, request rate, batch size and application throughput.
- Performance: SM and memory clocks, current performance state and application latency or tokens per second.
- Thermals: GPU temperature, memory temperature where available, the device-reported temperature limit and thermal margin.
- Power: instantaneous draw, configured power limit, enforced power limit and any power-violation counter.
- Events: active clock-throttle reasons and timestamps from the host, GPU-management stack and server-management controller.
Capture the slowdown with one-second sampling
A single snapshot can be perfectly healthy even though the GPU throttled for several minutes earlier. Sample through the complete workload and retain the CSV with the application log. NVIDIA’s NVSentinel thermal-margin runbook uses one-second samples containing GPU name and timestamp, GPU and memory temperatures, temperature margin, power, SM clock, active throttle reason and utilization.

On systems that expose these fields through nvidia-smi, a practical starting query is:
nvidia-smi --query-gpu=name,timestamp,temperature.gpu,temperature.memory,temperature.gpu.tlimit,power.draw,power.limit,clocks.sm,clocks.mem,utilization.gpu,utilization.memory,clocks_throttle_reasons.active --format=csv -l 1
Redirect the output to a timestamped file for a long run. If a field is rejected, remove that field and record the omission; sensor and counter support varies by GPU. A missing memory-temperature field means that product may not expose that sensor through the management interface, not that memory is cool.
Align the telemetry timestamps with application throughput. Look for the first simultaneous change in clocks, power, temperature margin, utilization and throttle reason. If utilization drops because the application stopped submitting work, the resulting low clock is not GPU throttling. If utilization remains high while clocks fall and a reason becomes active, the event is relevant.

| Reported reason | What it means | What to compare next |
|---|---|---|
| Software power cap | The driver reduces clocks so draw stays within a configured or enforced power envelope. | Measured power, requested power limit and enforced power limit. A cap can be deliberate. |
| Software thermal slowdown | The GPU or memory temperature is above the relevant maximum operating temperature, so software reduces performance. | GPU and memory temperatures, reported limits and thermal margin at the event. |
| Hardware thermal slowdown | Hardware protection is responding to excessive temperature. | Thermal margin, both temperature sensors where available, airflow and system-management logs. |
| Hardware power brake | An external power-brake signal is asserting a hardware slowdown. | Server power-supply, board-management and chassis logs; do not assume the GPU core is overheating. |
| Synchronized boost | A GPU group is limited to the frequency achievable by its slowest member. | Every GPU’s clocks, temperatures, limits and active reasons. |
| Other or no active reason | The observed performance change may be workload behavior, a transient event or a reason not exposed by that device. | Application logs, utilization transitions, driver events and the full time series. |
The names and availability of these fields vary by architecture and software release. Preserve the exact string reported by your system when opening a support case.
Separate a normal power cap from a fault
NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation states: “When power management is enabled the GPU limits power draw under load to fit within a predefined power envelope by manipulating the current performance state.” In practice, crossing an enforced board-power target can make the driver lower clocks to remain inside that target. This is designed behavior when the limit reflects the server’s electrical or thermal budget.
Compare three values at the same timestamp: the power the application is drawing, the configured or requested limit and the enforced limit. If draw repeatedly reaches the enforced limit while the active reason is software power cap, the clock reduction is consistent with power management. Check whether an administrator intentionally set a lower cap, whether the chassis has a shared budget and whether all GPUs are competing for that budget.

Do not raise a limit simply to make a graph look better. A higher limit can exceed the server’s supply, cooling or firmware design. Change a power policy only under the platform owner’s procedure, then repeat the same workload and compare throughput, clocks, temperatures and error logs.

Interpret temperature against the GPU’s own limits
There is no universal “throttle at X degrees” rule for every accelerator. NVIDIA notes that temperature readings and temperature limits are not supported on all products and that device behavior varies. Use the exact model’s reported thresholds, not a number copied from another card or server.
Use thermal margin when it is available
The NVSentinel runbook treats temperature.gpu.tlimit as the margin to the hardware slowdown limit where supported. A margin shrinking toward zero during the performance drop is stronger evidence of thermal proximity than a standalone temperature value. Record the margin before, during and after the event; a brief dip can explain a brief clock change, while a sustained near-zero margin points to a persistent cooling or load issue.
Check memory as well as the core
A normal-looking GPU-core temperature does not rule out a memory-temperature limit. Query memory temperature when the product supports it, and compare it with the device-reported threshold. Conversely, do not treat an absent memory sensor as proof that memory is within limits.
Do not change trip points casually
NVIDIA’s Grace tuning guide recommends retaining default thermal-trip settings and warns that increasing a passive trip point can cause more aggressive hardware throttling. That guidance is specific to Grace platforms; it is not a universal setting recipe for unrelated servers. Any trip-point change must follow the exact platform’s documentation and service policy.

Check every GPU and the shared power path
On a multi-GPU server, collect the same fields for every card. Compare clocks, power, temperatures, thermal margins, limits and active reasons at the moment throughput changes. Synchronized boost can hold a group to the lowest frequency achievable by its slowest GPU, so a card that appears healthy in isolation may run more slowly because another card has a tighter thermal or power constraint.
If hardware power brake is active, investigate the external path: redundant power-supply status, inlet or outlet power, board-management events, chassis alarms, firmware messages and operating-system logs. A power-brake assertion can come from the system rather than the GPU temperature. Involve the server vendor or administrator before reseating parts or changing GPU settings.
Also check whether airflow changes as the run progresses. Inspect fan and inlet status through the server-management controller, confirm that rack doors and baffles are in their approved positions, and compare the affected GPU with its peers. These checks support a diagnosis; they do not identify a replacement part by themselves.

For managed clusters, NVIDIA Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) diagnostics can exercise thermal, power and performance paths under realistic load. Depending on the DCGM release, diagnostics can record per-second power use, graphics and memory clocks, GPU temperature, power violations, performance results and NVML events. DCGM 2.0 diagnostics and the 2.3 API reference are versioned documents, so command names and available fields may differ in newer or older deployments.
Best Value
- Run in an approved maintenance window with the server’s normal thermal and power safeguards enabled.
- Set test duration and temperature-limit parameters for the specific GPU and site policy; do not copy a limit from another model.
- Allow the targeted stress test to stabilize for at least 30 seconds, as recommended by the DCGM documentation.
- Use the 60-second recommendation for its performance test when that test is selected.
- Save the diagnostic report and correlate any temperature violation, power violation, clock failure or NVML event with the production time series.
A diagnostic can fail because a target cannot be reached or a configured threshold is crossed. Treat that result as evidence to interpret with the telemetry, not as an automatic verdict that the GPU is defective.
Use a decision matrix before changing hardware
| Evidence during the slowdown | Most likely class | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Draw equals enforced limit; software power-cap reason is active; temperatures remain below reported limits. | Designed or configured power limiting. | Review the server power budget and policy; keep the cap if it is intentional. |
| Thermal margin approaches zero, GPU or memory temperature approaches its reported limit, and thermal slowdown is active. | Thermal protection. | Check airflow, fan operation, ambient conditions, heatsink contact, firmware and workload power density with the OEM procedure. |
| Hardware power-brake reason appears without a matching thermal event. | External power-path protection. | Inspect supply, board-management and chassis logs; escalate to the system vendor. |
| One GPU has lower achievable clocks or a tighter limit while others follow it. | Multi-GPU synchronized boost or one-card constraint. | Compare all cards and test the group under the same load; isolate the outlier only under an approved procedure. |
| Utilization falls before clocks fall and no throttle reason is active. | Workload, scheduler or application behavior. | Inspect job queues, data loading, CPU bottlenecks, batch-size changes and application logs. |
Escalate with evidence, not a generic parts list
When telemetry points to real hardware thermal slowdown, repeated power-brake assertions or a persistent outlier, correlate the event with chassis logs, airflow readings, firmware state, driver state and other system faults. Reproduce only within approved limits and preserve the original logs.
Identify the exact server model, GPU model, board revision and confirmed failing component before requesting service or replacement hardware. A generic fan, thermal compound, GPU or power supply may be incompatible or may not address the observed cause. The appropriate part and procedure depend on the server’s mechanical design, power delivery and support contract.

- Workload description, start time and the throughput or latency graph.

- Active throttle-reason strings, configured and enforced power limits, thermal margins and memory-temperature availability.
- DCGM results, operating-system logs and server-management events.
- Any recent firmware, driver, cooling, power-policy or workload change.
Common diagnostic mistakes
- Using one temperature cutoff: Limits differ by product, and some sensors are unavailable.
- Sampling only after the job finishes: The event may have cleared when you look.
- Watching only GPU utilization: High utilization can coexist with a power cap, and low utilization can be caused by the application.
- Inspecting one card in a multi-GPU host: Synchronized boost can couple the group.
- Raising thermal trips or power limits first: This can increase hardware throttling or violate the server budget.
- Replacing parts before identifying the model and reason: Compatibility and causality remain unproven.
The Bottom Line
The reliable path is telemetry first: capture a one-second time series through the slowdown, read the active throttle reason, compare power and thermal margins with the exact GPU’s reported limits, inspect all GPUs and the server power path, then run controlled diagnostics. Only after those steps indicate a hardware problem should model-specific service or replacement be considered.
