Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Keep everyone outside the robot’s hazard area, then read and record the exact alarm before resetting anything. A cobot that will not move may be in an emergency-stop, protective-stop, power, or enable state rather than suffering a network outage. Once the safety state is understood, check the physical Ethernet path and the model-specific network settings. A successful ping or green status icon does not prove that the robot application, engineering software, PLC link, or safety channel is available.
Start with a safe, stationary cell
Stop the investigation if anyone would need to enter the robot’s working envelope. Do not reach into the cell, try to push an unresponsive arm, or repeatedly clear alarms while the cause is unknown. Keep the controller and pendant where you can read them without entering the hazard area.

Look at the robot pendant, controller display, and visible status lights. Classify what you see before touching a reset button:
| Observed state | What it may indicate | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency-stop message, broken stop chain, or safety fault | An emergency-stop circuit, gate or other safety device, safety communication, or controller safety function has prevented motion. | Keep the cell clear and follow the named robot’s safety-reset procedure. Never jumper or bypass the circuit. |
| Protective stop or collision-related stop | The robot’s protective monitoring has stopped motion; this is not automatically a network failure. | Identify the triggering condition and use the manufacturer’s recovery process. |
| Controller or pendant dark, or robot shown as disabled | Loss of power, a disabled/blackout state, or an uncompleted enable/run sequence. | Check documented power and enable indications without opening equipment or changing safety wiring. |
| Communication timeout or “Robot Connection Timeout” | A physical link, address, interface, application, or controller communication problem. | Record the alarm, then inspect the permitted Ethernet path and configuration. |
| Only an external tool cannot connect | The robot may still be operating; the fault can be an option, permission, or tool-specific setting. | Test the pendant and other approved interfaces separately from the engineering application. |
Haas documentation, for example, treats a broken emergency-stop chain and a disabled robot as distinct conditions. Treat the table as a classification aid, not a universal button sequence: labels and recovery steps vary by robot, controller, safety equipment, and software release.

Preserve the evidence before clearing the alarm
Photograph or transcribe the complete alarm text, number, and screen state. Capture the time and what happened immediately beforehand: a power cycle, cable movement, network change, program or software update, collision, or activation of a safety device. Note whether the pendant, controller, robot arm, PLC connection, engineering software, or only one application is unresponsive.
Write down the robot and controller model, installed software version, serial or machine identifier, and any recent configuration change. Preserve available event logs and error reports. When Haas requests service information, it asks for an error report and machine or cobot identifiers; providing equivalent records to another manufacturer or authorized integrator shortens diagnosis.
Check power, pendant, and enable state
Confirm the controller and pendant state
Verify that the controller has its expected power indication and that the pendant is communicating with it. A dark screen, missing status lights, or a pendant that cannot show the normal control pages points to a power or controller issue rather than an ordinary Ethernet timeout. Do not remove covers or probe mains circuits unless you are qualified and the manufacturer’s maintenance procedure permits it.

Verify the documented run or enable condition
Many cobots require a particular enable, run, deadman, or mode state before jogging. A robot can appear “green” in a host display while remaining disabled. Haas gives a model-specific example in which the pendant’s Run screen is used to identify a blackout or disabled condition. That example does not establish a universal menu path for other manufacturers. Use the exact pendant instructions for the installed model and software version.

Check external safety devices without defeating them
Inspect the condition of the emergency-stop buttons, gates, light curtains, scanners, and other safety devices from outside the hazard area. If a device is intentionally active, restore the safe operating condition according to its documented procedure. Never hold, tape, jumper, or disconnect a safety input merely to make the arm move.
If the alarm points to communications, inspect the physical path
Check the cable, connectors, and correct port
After confirming that the manual allows inspection in the current state, check both ends of the Ethernet cable for a loose plug, bent latch, visible damage, or an unplugged interface. Verify that the cable is connected to the intended controller or network port, not a similar-looking service port. Trace the route to any interface box, switch, or USB-to-Ethernet adapter used by that installation.
Haas lists a defective or disconnected Ethernet cable, adapter/interface checks, cable testing, and a direct-connection test in its timeout troubleshooting. Mitsubishi’s CR800 controller guidance likewise identifies Ethernet disconnection and the robot CPU/controller link as communication-error paths. These are diagnostic options for those installations, not a guarantee that a generic replacement cable or adapter will solve a safety or controller fault.
Test methodically
Use the cable tester or direct connection test specified by the robot manufacturer or integrator. Change one element at a time and record the result. If replacing a visibly damaged cable, use the cable type, shielding, length, and industrial rating required by the installation; a consumer cable with an incompatible connector or environment rating can introduce another fault.

Verify IP addressing and network configuration
Compare the configured IP address, subnet mask, and relevant communication settings with the values in the robot’s own manual and the integrator’s network drawings. Check for an address duplicated by another device and for a robot placed outside the expected subnet. Mitsubishi lists duplicate or out-of-subnet addressing as a controller communication fault path.
Do not copy an address from another manufacturer’s example. Haas documentation gives a matched address for its own package, while Mitsubishi describes different configuration checks for its CR800 controller. An address that is correct for one cell can make another cell unreachable or create an unsafe conflict.
Make changes only through the approved configuration interface and record the original values first. If the cell is connected to a plant network, involve the responsible network or controls engineer before changing switch, firewall, VLAN, or routing settings. A robot can be reachable from one segment while unavailable to the PLC or engineering workstation on another.
Separate network reachability from application access
Test each connection independently
Ask which path actually failed:
- Robot to its controller or safety board.
- Controller to a PLC or plant network.
- Teach pendant to the controller.
- Engineering software to the robot.
- One robot application or program to a service.
A ping tests basic IP reachability only. It does not verify the robot protocol, a required option, user permission, firewall rule, PLC session, or safety channel. Conversely, failure in an engineering application does not prove that the cable is disconnected.

ABB RobotStudio example
ABB’s troubleshooting guidance describes a case in which a robot answers a WAN ping but RobotStudio cannot connect. The documented checks include missing options or permissions and RobotStudio-specific public-network settings. Use those checks only for the stated ABB and RobotStudio setup; do not apply them blindly to another vendor’s controller or to a plant network whose security policy forbids the change.
Compare the pendant, a permitted ping, the PLC diagnostic, and the engineering tool. If only one tool fails while the pendant and controller remain healthy, preserve that tool’s error message and configuration for the integrator instead of resetting the robot repeatedly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle safety communication and emergency-stop faults conservatively
A safety communication timeout is a safety-system issue, even when an ordinary Ethernet link appears active. Universal Robots’ software 10.6 error code C4 concerns loss of communication between the Safety Control Board and motherboard. Mitsubishi’s CR800 troubleshooting lists network noise, wiring or device problems, monitoring-time settings, and possible hardware failure among checks for recurring safety communication timeouts.
Follow the exact controller manual for the named model and software version. Check only the wiring, devices, monitoring settings, and diagnostic pages that the procedure identifies. Do not increase a monitoring timeout as a workaround, disable safety monitoring, or bridge a safety channel to force motion. If the alarm returns after the permitted recovery, stop and involve qualified maintenance personnel, the OEM, or an authorized integrator.

Reset or reboot only with the model-specific procedure
Reset, activation, enable, and full power-cycle sequences are not interchangeable across cobots. Before any reset, confirm that the cell is clear, the alarm has been recorded, and the manual permits the action for the current fault.
- Use the named robot’s documented reset or acknowledge function only if the alarm allows it.
- If the manual calls for a reboot, follow its order for controller, pendant, robot, network devices, and external equipment; do not invent a universal sequence.
- Wait for every specified status indication before enabling motion.
- Run the manufacturer’s prescribed checks or a low-risk test program from outside the hazard area.
- Record whether the fault cleared once or returned immediately.
Universal Robots’ C4 guidance includes checking the internal Ethernet connection, considering communication overload, completing a reboot sequence, and checking for a software update. Mitsubishi describes model-specific power-cycle steps for certain communication-configuration errors. Neither procedure is a general recipe for every cobot.
Know when to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Contact the OEM or authorized integrator when the same fault returns, a safety or controller hardware error is reported, a cable/port/adapter test does not resolve the issue, or the cause remains unclear. Stop repeated resets: they can erase useful evidence without repairing an intermittent wiring, network, or hardware problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSend the service team:
- The complete alarm text and code, with photos if possible.
- Robot, controller, pendant, and software-version identifiers.
- The time line of the preceding event and any recent changes.
- Whether the pendant, controller, robot, PLC, engineering tool, or one application was affected.
- Relevant event logs, error reports, network addresses, and integrator drawings.
- The cable, port, direct-connection, power, and approved reset checks already completed.
Describe the exact symptom rather than saying only that the cobot is “offline.” Phrases such as Haas’ “Robot Connection Timeout,” an on-screen “ROBOT COMMUNICATIONS LOST” message, or ABB’s “Ping robot via WAN but cannot access with RobotStudio” identify different diagnostic branches. An accurate label helps the responder select the correct manual and software version.
Quick Recap
A compact decision checklist
- Protect people: keep the hazard area clear and do not move the arm manually.
- Read the state: distinguish emergency stop, protective stop, power/enable, communication timeout, and application-only failure.
- Capture evidence: save the exact alarm, time, preceding event, identifiers, and logs.
- Check approved basics: controller and pendant power, documented enable/run state, and external safety-device status.
- Inspect communications: cable seating and damage, correct ports, interfaces, and any specified tester or direct test.
- Validate configuration: model-specific IP, subnet, duplicate-address, and communication settings.
- Test the failed layer: pendant, ping, PLC, engineering software, and application separately.
- Protect the safety system: treat safety timeouts and stop-chain faults as qualified-service issues; never bypass them.
- Recover correctly: use only the named model’s reset, reboot, activation, and software-version procedure.
- Escalate recurring or unexplained faults: provide the complete evidence package to the OEM or authorized integrator.
