What to Check in Quarterly Results Beyond Revenue Growth

Revenue growth shows whether sales increased; it does not show whether growth is profitable, turning into cash, or sustainable. To read a company’s quarterly results, compare like-for-like growth, margins and earnings, cash flow, debt and liquidity, segment performance, and updated guidance. Use the company’s own definitions for adjusted metrics, and compare the same issuer over time before comparing it with peers.

1. Is the growth comparable?

Start with the same quarter a year earlier, which helps control for seasonality. A sequential comparison with the previous quarter can add context, but interpret it in light of the business’s seasonal pattern. Then distinguish reported sales growth from organic or constant-currency growth.

Read the release’s explanation of acquisitions, divestitures, closures, foreign-exchange movements, pricing, volume, and product or customer mix. These can make reported growth differ from the performance of the continuing business. The measures are issuer-defined, so check exactly what each one includes.

For example, W.W. Grainger reported Q2 2026 sales growth of 10.3%, compared with 13.7% on a daily, organic, constant-currency basis after accounting for its U.K. exit and foreign-exchange impact. That company-specific comparison illustrates why a headline growth rate may not tell the whole story; it is not a universal adjustment formula. Grainger’s Q2 2026 earnings release.

2. Is growth improving profitability?

Check gross profit and margin, operating income and margin, net income and margin, and diluted earnings per share (EPS). Compare both dollar amounts and margins with the year-earlier quarter: income can rise simply because sales grew, while a margin comparison helps show how much profit the company kept from each dollar of sales.

Use the company’s stated reasons to interpret changes. Pricing, product mix, input costs, freight, operating expenses, interest, taxes, and share-count changes can affect different measures in different ways. Don’t assume a cause from the numbers alone.

Grainger said its Q2 2026 operating margin rose 120 basis points year over year, attributing the result to gross-margin improvement, sales leverage in one segment, and the U.K. exit. It also said EPS reflected fewer shares and a higher effective tax rate. The example shows why it helps to read the explanation alongside the reported figures, rather than treating EPS as a standalone verdict. Grainger’s Q2 2026 earnings release.

3. Are earnings turning into cash?

Compare cash from operating activities with net income, then read the discussion of working capital. Timing changes in receivables, inventory, and payables can move cash generation up or down in a quarter. Check whether management describes such effects as timing-related and whether the filing gives enough detail to assess them.

Look at capital expenditures as well as operating cash flow. Companies often present free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, but the term is not a uniformly defined GAAP line item. Read the issuer’s definition and reconciliation before using the figure or comparing it with another company’s.

In Q2 2026, Grainger reported $444 million in operating cash flow, $111 million in capital expenditures, and $333 million in free cash flow. Its release said unfavorable working capital partly offset operating cash flow. The arithmetic and management’s explanation together provide more context than the free-cash-flow figure alone. Grainger’s Q2 2026 earnings release.

Definitions can differ materially. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditures and cautions that the measure does not represent residual cash available for discretionary spending, since obligations such as credit-facility principal payments are not deducted. Avantor’s Q2 2026 release adds certain acquisition-related transaction costs and taxes to cash from operations less capital expenditures. Finally, check how the company used cash: capital investment, acquisitions, debt repayment, dividends, or share repurchases. Cash generation and its allocation are different questions.

4. Can the balance sheet support the business?

Review cash, debt, liquidity measures, leverage measures, maturities, and other commitments described in the release or filing. Consider whether capital allocation—investment, acquisitions, debt reduction, dividends, or buybacks—fits the company’s financial position and stated priorities.

Leverage measures are not always calculated the same way, and the reviewed examples do not establish a universal safe threshold. Use the issuer’s definition and reconciliation, and treat its figure as a way to understand that company, not as a peer benchmark. Avantor reported $306.8 million in cash, $3,715.4 million in gross debt, and adjusted net leverage of 3.3x at June 30, 2026. Avantor’s Q2 2026 earnings release.

5. What do the segments and operating indicators show?

A consolidated result can conceal different trends in different parts of a business. Compare segment sales and margins with prior periods, and read management’s explanations for changes. A stronger segment may be offset by a weaker one, or headline growth may depend heavily on one area.

Look for sector-relevant indicators the company actually reports, such as orders, bookings, backlog, customer retention, or unit volumes. Their value depends on the business and the company’s definitions; do not assume an indicator is comparable across companies. GE Vernova’s Q2 2026 release, for instance, presents segment results and order data alongside consolidated GAAP and non-GAAP measures. GE Vernova’s Q2 2026 results exhibit.

6. What changed in the outlook?

Compare the latest full-year guidance range with the company’s prior range. Note whether each measure is GAAP or adjusted, and read the assumptions attached to it, including currency, taxes, restructuring, capital expenditures, and demand. Then consider whether the quarter’s performance supports or conflicts with the outlook and how much of the fiscal year remains.

Avantor raised its organic revenue growth and adjusted EPS outlook in its July 29, 2026 release; GE Vernova also raised its 2026 revenue and free-cash-flow guidance in its Q2 results. These dated company announcements illustrate the information a revision can provide, not a prediction of future performance. Forward-looking guidance depends on assumptions and may change. Avantor also said certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures could not be reconciled without unreasonable effort. Avantor’s Q2 2026 earnings release; GE Vernova’s Q2 2026 results exhibit.

7. How should you treat adjusted metrics?

Adjusted EBITDA, adjusted EPS, organic growth, and free cash flow can help explain management’s view, but they are supplemental measures, not substitutes for GAAP results. Check the reconciliation to the closest GAAP measure, the items added or removed, and whether the definition changed between periods. Similarly named measures may not be comparable across companies.

Innovex says its non-GAAP calculations may differ from those of other companies. Avantor says non-GAAP measures should not be considered in isolation or as substitutes for reported GAAP results, and encourages investors to review its SEC-filed consolidated financial statements. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K; Avantor’s Q2 2026 earnings release.

A practical way to compare results

  • For one company over time: compare the same periods using consistent definitions, while accounting for seasonality and changes in the business.
  • For peer companies: first check that fiscal periods, business mix, segment definitions, and non-GAAP calculations are sufficiently similar.
  • For any metric: ask what it measures, what changed, and what explanation or reconciliation the company provides. No single metric or target level ranks every business.

This framework helps organize public disclosures; it does not predict investment returns or constitute a company-specific assessment or investment recommendation.
